ENARA LAKUNTZA

- Gulliver’s Travels is a satirical novel, written by Jonathan Swift.

- Satire: In literature, prose or verse that employs wit in the form of irony, to expose human wickedness and folly.

- In Gulliver’s Travels, Swift satirizes the 3 most important powers in England: Politics, Religion, Justice

Gulliver vs. Lilliputians Gulliver: appears as a giant in comparison

to Lilliputians. He’s got a privileged point of view of the society of that land. His size may represent his great knowledge as he has a cultivated mind. HOWEVER →Gullible: naïve and incapable of foreseeing the tricks of politicians. Gulliver = society.

“ When bending my eyes downwards as much as I could , I perceived it to be a human creature not six inches high, with a bow and arrow in his hands” (p.23)

“ My hours of leasure I spent in reading the best authors; ancient and modern, being always provided to the good number of books; and when I was ashore in obseving the manners and disposition of the people, as well as learning the language, wherein I had a great facility by the strength of my memory” (p.22)

- Lilliputians: in spite of their size they appear as fearless and cruel towards Gulliver and they think themselves as important and impressive. This reflects the sense of superiority of human kind. Small in such a big Universe. Human cruelty also evident here.

“ …and probably the malice of the rabble, who were very impatient to crowd about me as near as they durst, and some of them had the impudence to shoot their arrows at me as I sat on the ground by the door of my house, whereof one very narrowly missed my left eye.” (p.32)

The Emperor: caricature of George I to criticize him.

“ He is taller by almost the breadth of my nail, than any of his court, which alone is enough to strike an awe into the beholders. His features are strong and masculine with an Austrian lip and arched nose, his complexion olive, his countenance erect, his body and limbs well proportioned all his motions grateful and his department majestic.” (p.31)
