92.7 Big FM hosts Women's marathon

To celebrate the International Women's Day 40 students from DPS, Srinagar with their teachers joined all girls marathon that was been organized by 92.7 Big FM at SKICC.

It was morning of 9th March, 2011. The sun was up touching the peaks of Mahadev and the early spring flowers were still to bloom. A huge crowd of students in their colourful sporty uniforms had gathered at the gates of SKICC.

Students from DPS, Presentation Convent, Kothi Bagh, Amira KadalGirls Higher Secondary School and Woodland participated in this event. As the clock struck 8:00 AM, RJ Sarah flagged off the run which concluded at the gates of famous Mughal Garden, Nishat Bagh.

Fadeelah Feroze (Class 8) from DPS was the first to arrive at the finishing line amongst the DPS participants and 4th amongst all the participants.

Visit by

(Sir) Moti Tika Ram(Retired Supreme Court Judge of Fiji)

Sir Moti Tikaram, (born 1925) has been a judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji and a soccer administrator. He was the first local person to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji. He has served on numerous boards and committees and is the patron of several sporting organisations.

His excellency visited the school on March 3rd, 2011. (Sir) Moti Tika Ram was all praises for the school infrastructure especially the library setup and school playgrounds.

He admired the facilities provided by the school for the upcoming scholars.

Visit to Help FoundationVisit to Help Foundation 09MAR

Students and teachers of DPS, Srinagar were invited to the inaugural ceremony of 24 hours helpline for children. Divisional Commissioner Mr. Asgar Samoon was the chief guest at the occasion.

HELP is a non profit organisation setup in 1997 with the objective of providing education and mental health counselling to women and children.

The foundation has setup schools, health care clinics and camps, and has played a vital role in teaching the art form of theatre.

Visit of US AmbassadorTimothy J RoemerThe United States Ambassador to India, Timothy J Roemer visited DPS, Srinagar on March 18, 2011.He was received by students dressed in traditional Kashmiri clothes. After entering the school hall, he joined a group of students who were performing on Zoobie Doobie in the tiny tots.

He joined students who were playing cricket and basket ball in the ground. Then the ambassador had a brief question- answer session with students in the English lab. A colourful cultural programme was performed in the indoor stadium .Roemer could not stop to tap his feet and cheer the students when they displayed various forms of Kashmiri folk dances and songs.

Roemer praised the management of DPS School including its chairman Vijay Dhar for providing good education and state-of-the-art facilities to the students. “You are shaping the future in a better way. Keep it up! I belong to a family of teachers and professors and know the worth of education. You should understand that education is a simple weapon to change the world,” Roemer said.

Basic Skiing Courseby Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering

IISM is a national institute which has been promoting winter sports in Kashmir valley. The institute provides various skiing courses. A skiing course was organized by DPS, Srinagar under IISM that consisted of 17 student from the school. This program started on 7th March and went on for a fortnight. The participants belonged to the age group of 8 to 14 years. All the students were enrolled for basic course and they all qualified for intermediate.

This year we had some young participants enrolled for the course. Syed Rawhaan (age 8) was rewarded as the youngest participant tp complete all the techniques, Devanshi Sharma (age 9) was rewarded as the youngest girl participant. Shibar Rafiq (Class 6) and Umair Ayub (Class 6) stood 1st and 3rd in the techniques exam. Mohd. Sajeel Masood (Class 6),Moin Sultan Shaw(Class 6) and Afnan Ali(Class 6) stood 1st , 2nd and 3rd in the solalom exam.

First day LKG in school for students

The toddlers in their fresh uniforms were welcomed by the staff. Their first day at the

school was charged with high emotions from both sides. The atmosphere was full of

laughter and excitement. The staff made them comfortable in their new colourful

Aatish Taseer, author of Stranger to History, visited DPS to give the students an overview of

what contemporary writing is. He was in an introspective mood and moved down the

memory lane to visit his childhood experiences of his

grandfather who was the principal of S.P college in his

times. His mother Tavleen Singh being a writer herself,

has written a book on Kashmir titled “Kashmir: A tragedy

of errors”. He appreciated the school and its environs.

There was an interactive session where he answered

queries from our serious students.

Orientation for parents of LKG studentsAn Orientation – cum – Interaction Session on Effective Parenting Skills with LKG parents was conducted on 23rd and 24th of March, 2011.

Mrs. Ismat Ahmed talked about the physical, communicative, cognitive, emotional and social development. She talked about the points one should keep in mind in raising a happy, healthy child.

The orientation program got a good response by the 225 parents that participated in the session. D.P.S is the only school which conducts an orientation programme with parents.

EmergencyEvacuationDrill

An emergency evacuation drill was conducted for class 3-8. In this drill about 1573 students

and 73 teachers participated. The drill was conducted keeping in mind the natural

calamities.

This drill covers disaster management. According to the drill the students had been

assigned a particular path to evacuate the building and assemble in the grounds. Their

alertness, presence of mind and survival instincts were put to test.
