Newsletter Term 4 Week 7, 18 th November 2014 Upcoming events Weeks 6&7 – Swim School Dear Parents/Carers Thank you for supporting our school fete last Friday. It was a lot of fun and we managed to raise a tidy amount of funds to support the school. Thank you to Ms Baker for organising things and to everyone for helping make sure we had an enjoyable evening. Last Thursday, the students and community had the opportunity to farewell Aunty Sue. Sue has been our Aboriginal Education Officer for 20 years. In that time Sue has been an advocate for the education of all children and we all know that she will be missed by everyone. The new electronic school sign will be operating shortly. We are currently waiting for the school electrican to complete the wiring. Schools rely on many methods of communication. The sign is another way that we can get our message about the quality of our students and school to the Gunnedah community. The focus of our school is to be serious about learning. Our research-based professional learning is focussed on using assessment for learning practices. To ensure that our teachers have an idea of the effectiveness of their teaching, we are able to calculate an effect size. Effect size uses pre-test data to give a starting point and the post-test data gives us an end point. The difference in the data is then calculated. Teachers are then able to analyse data to determine the next step in teaching. This means that students at Gunnedah Public School have their learning needs determined through accurate and detailed data collection. The weather continues to be very hot and dry. Students need to have water every day. All students are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Water bottles are the easiest way to ensure that kids can access water whenever they need. Have a great week Kind regards Stephen de Roos Aunty Sue’s Farewell Last Thursday GPS farewelled a much loved staff member of 20 years. Sue Sutherland, or Aunty Sue, retired this term. The school assembled in the hall and many people spoke of fond memories of Aunty Sue including Wayne Griffiths, Miss West, Mr de Roos and Larna Saddler from 5/6J. She was presented with some gifts and a card signed by the whole school. Many of Aunty Sue’s family and friends attended, including her three sons. We all shared a BBQ sausage sizzle lunch and had a chance to give Aunty Sue a hug and thank her for her time in our school. We will miss your smiling face in our school Aunty Sue. GPS Fete GPS held its first fete for a few years, last Friday. Every class ran a stall and helped raise money for our school. We had a jumping castle, showbags, white elephant stall, dunk tank, BBQ & cake stall and a very popular Slushie machine. Special thanks go to Henessey Real Estate for the donation of the Jumping Castle and Gunnedah Hire Service for coming to the rescue in the 40 degree heat to kindly donate the Slushie Machine. We raised $1600 for our school and look forward to getting something useful for the school. Thanks go to everyone who came and supported the GPS Fete, which will surely be an annual event. No Nits November ‘No Nits November’, to be held during the month of November, is an awareness campaign to help both children and parents fully understand head lice, while also giving parents and kids the opportunity to win a $1000 donation to their school library. The PR agency behind the creative concept, Believe Advertising, built the campaign for Australian head lice treatment company NitWits, as a way to create awareness and buzz around the topic of head lice, while working across multiple print and digital platforms to achieve mass coverage for NitWits. “I wanted to creat a campaign for NitWits that would get Australian families talking about Head Lice awareness along with also having an innovative social media element. The $1000 donation to a school’s library gives the campaign a local focus that gets kids and families involved from a grass roots level,” says Believe Advertising’s director, Adrian Falk.
