Guru Tegh Bahadur Memorial(from Page 1)
Guru Tegh Bahadur is the Ninth Guru ofthe Sikhs. Guru Tegh Bahadur ’ssignificance in the history of Delhi canbe gauged by the fact that two historicGurudwaras have been built in hismemory in Delhi. They serve as importantplaces of pilgrimage for those visitingDelhi. These are: 1) Gurdwara Sis Ganjwhere Guru Tegh Bahadur and three ofhis disciples were beheaded; 2) GurdwaraRakabgang, his final resting place.
With the development of nationalhighways, entry points into Delhi as thecapital city of India, have acquiredimmense significance. The entry point onthe historical Sher Shah Suri Marg calledNational Highway No.1 has beendedicated to the memory of Guru TeghBahadur. This memorial is a project ofthe Delhi Tourism and TransportationDevelopment Corporation (DTTDC).
The inherent objective while designingthis memorial was to provide an imposinglandscape as a commemorativeenvironment for visitors.
Some of the distinct features of thismemorial are: The Central Pylon whichis 24 meters high (Total weight - 16.5 MTincluding 3.5 MT of stainless steel). It islit on top with lights bearing semblanceto the Nishan Sahib and stand in memoryof Guru Tegh Bahadur. The base of thisPylon comprises of a Lotus with 8 petalsmade of hand beaten Stainless Steel, elliptical in form, signifying selflessness,a sense of being able to give away withoutany expectations. His three disciples arerepresented by the three stainless steelsemi-arches which are 15.7 meters high(total weight - 114 MT including 16.5 MTof stainless steel) placed in a semi-circular plan. The ten monoliths with drygranite cladding represent the ten Sikhgurus with their respective teachingsengraved on them. All these elements ofsignificance are composed in an ellipticallandscaped bowl with green slopes.
The architectural play of sweeping greencurves, geometric granite planes andimposing stainless steel forms create anaesthetic interplay of form and a sereneenvironment.

provided by the architect, and based onappropriate performance criteria, prepared the technical specification forthe Lotus. Materials selection was basedon the aesthetic factor, longevity, maintenance considerations andeconomics. A complex set of designcalculations for structural viability weredone. Detailed design drawings of thestructures were made keeping in mindthe needs of fabrication.
A total of about 21.5 Tones of stainlesssteel is used in this project. 19.5 Tonesof 316L cold rolled sheets in 2.5 and 1.5mm are used with No. 4 (satin) and No.8 (mirror) finish. Three Tones of 304 gradestructural members were used for thelotus frame.
According to Mr. Jose Kurian of DTTDCwho saw the project through for theGovernment of Delhi, “Stainless steel
was chosen to clad the central pylon, thelotus at the base and the three arches toadd grandeur and serenity to this importantmemorial. In my experience, stainlesssteel is the ideal material for suchmemorials that are expected to enthrallvisitors needing only minimal cleaning toretain their pristine appearance fordecades to come.”

Raajaratna Metal Industries Ltd, one ofthe leading manufacturers of stainlesssteel wires for the last 20 years, has nowstarted manufacturing stainless steelreinforcement bar for concrete.
Conventionally, reinforcement bars aremade of 0.2% Carbon steel. Corrosion ofcarbon steel reinforcing bar has been aserious issue around the world for manyyears. RAAJRATNA wishes to increaseawareness of the benefits of solidstainless steel reinforcing bar as a high-strength, corrosion-resistant alternativerebar product in India. The obviousadvantages of solid stainless steelreinforcing bar are extremely long life, excellent corrosion resistance and highstrength with good ductility, good bond tothe cement, no fragile coating, and noneed of end caps. Stainless steel alsoenables the designer to optimise the useof concrete. This provides for bestsustainable practice and ensures long-term durability for the reinforced concretestructure. Reduced maintenance duringthe service life design also improves overallsustainability credentials of the completeddesign. These are commonly used inconstruction of bridges, buildings inEurope, USA, Middle East, Australia andin other parts of the world.
Recent advances in concrete technologyhave provided structural designers withmaterials which can easily last more than100 years, and the life of many concretestructures today is limited by thereinforcement. Improvements in the life ofthe reinforcement can translate directlyinto extended life of the structure.Raajratna can supply stainless steelreinforcement (Ribbed bar) in grades[304, 316, 316Ti, 1.4362 (Duplex), 1.4462(Duplex) and 204 Cu] in diameters 3 to16 mm.These reinforcement bars are coldworked to induce superior mechanicalproperties. All grades have minimum YieldStrength:550 N/mm and minimumElongation at fracture 15%. 204 Cu hashigher minimum Yield Strength: 650 N/mm.

Invisible City
Sculptor Anton Parsons has made abeautiful piece of art “invisible city”, astainless steel sculpture having a hiddenmessage in Braille. There is meaninghere, but it is hidden to mundane people. This is ironic, because only those towhom most of the rest of the world is inshadow can actually read it. So thissculpture introduces a little bit of mysteryinto the suity humdrum of city life —.This is always a good thing.
Made up of stainless steel grade 316 andsurface finished using ‘Swirly Brush’, thecomplete structure looks astonishing witha huge size of 1.2 m width and 2.2 mheight. It is located in the corner of
Lambton Quay & Grey Street inWellington, New Zealand.
The stainless steel of this sculptureseems to glow with an inner light. Themagnified Braille text suggests amessage, but the artist chooses to denyus access, raising issues ofcommunication in the contemporaryworld, and the difficult interface betweenthe disabled and the rest of thecommunity.
Invisible City is an appropriate publicwork because it functions on severallevels: Aesthetics – even withoutunderstanding that the dots on the two
boxes are Braille text, Invisible City is anaesthetically pleasing object – it doesn’thave to be read to be appreciated. Tactile– it is made to be touched. Surface –Invisible City is polished stainless steel, and reflects its surroundings. Whenlooking at it you see a reflection ofWellington.
This beautiful sculpture was presented tothe city with assistance from the Jackand Emma Griffin Charitable Trust andthe Wellington City Council.

The only disadvantage of stainless steelflux cored wire against stainless steelcovered electrodes is that it is noteconomical for small jobs. If youconsider the improved productivity, costcontrol and assured quality thatstainless steel flux cored wires offer, arapid growth of this product in the Indianmarket can be safely assumed. Sincethe usage of stainless steel in India isincreasing at about 10% per annum,

Using an innovative drawing process,ESAB has developed solid stainless steelMIG welding wires that feature a mattsurface appearance. The matt surface isfinished with a special feed-aid that doesnot accumulate within the feeding systemor welding gun, and has no adverse effecton the quality of the finished weld.
These wires provide improved weldingproperties and lead directly to enhancedMIG welding performance. For example, the matt surface allows the feed rolls togain a better grip on the wire and soeliminates troublesome slippage. Themanufacturing process gives improved
