(Eligibility: over 21, min 2 years since passing test

Why would you like to be a GUSA Freshers’ Helper?

I have been heavily involved in the university trampoline club for

three years now. In my second year I was the social secretary and

this year I have been the club captain. Next year I have taken on the

position of ordinary member. I care about the development of sport

in Glasgow University and being a fresher helper seems like a great

way to help. I also want to ensure that new students are aware of

the trampoline club and all that it has to offer. I am also a firm

believer in mass participation, I would like to help freshers learn that

in Glasgow university, sport is for absolutely anyone who wants to

get involved.

What qualities and experiences do you feel you would bring to the

role of GUSA Freshers’ Helper?

As I have mentioned above I have 2 years of experience on a club

committee, including a year as captain of the trampoline club. I am

also a level three trampoline coach. I trampoline for a separate club

in Glasgow and compete in national competitions on a regular basis.

My experience in sport, in committee positions and in coaching have

helped me learn a great deal about the function of GUSA, the

environment of a university sports club and how new members can

get involved at whatever level they want. I feel that no matter what

questions I am asked, I would be able to provide a useful answer,

even if it is just to point them towards the right person to speak to if

I do not know the answer myself.

A Fresher is unsure of what sports events are available to them

during their Freshers’ Week, what advice can you give them?

I would tell them that there are many ways of finding the

information they need. Firstly I would direct them to the sports fair

in the Stevenson building where there are a range of sports clubs all

waiting to give them any information they could want about training

hours and fresher taster sessions. Secondly I would tell them to

check the GUSA page on the university website or on the moodle

sight. Finally I would let them know that all the sports events were

open to them on freshers’ week as that is what it is all about!

If you could be any GUSA sport, what would you be and why?

After all my time spent with the trampoline club I would have to say

Trampolining. What other sport allows you to touch the ceiling of the

Stevenson building? Trampolining helps you with real life skills, it

teaches you how to do 10 positions on the bed in under a minute. It

is a fun sport which is extremely welcoming of beginners and the

competitions have an amazing social aspect to them. While

maintaining this relaxed exterior it can simultaneously be one of the

most exhilarating experiences you will ever have. I honestly cannot

think of a better sport to be.

You meet a Fresher who is torn between which Union's event to

attend that evening, what advice would you give to help with their

decision?

Firstly I would assure this fresher that no matter where they go, it is

guaranteed to be a great experience. I would tell them that freshers’

week is all about meeting new people and having a great time. I

would tell them to speak to new people that they have met during

the week and to ask them what their plans are… However there are

specific events that I would feel the need to promote above others,

the foam party at the GUU being one of them. Fresher’s flu is pretty

much a rite of passage that every fresher must go through

You find yourself at the bar, a fresher either side, one is evidently

the sporting type and the other is not. Who do you choose to talk to

first and why?

I would talk to the one who looks as though they are not the

sporting type. As I mentioned earlier I am a firm believer in mass

participation. I would not put any pressure on anyone to join a

sports club, but I would like to put the idea into as many heads as

possible. Sport has been such an incredible part of my university

experience and I’d like to at least show new students that even if

they are not really into sports, a sports club is a great way to meet

new friends and get an insight into a whole new world. There is

nothing quite like a university sports club, it is a unique experience.

The entertainment for the GUSA party pulls at the last minute, how

would you ensure that the Freshers don’t get bored and leave?

I would just do whatever I could to keep the freshers excited about

the night. I’d talk to freshers about how great freshers week has

been so far and ask about their favourite nights and keep taking

them to the bar. As long as the helpers are still interesting and the

chat is still good and the drinks are still going the party will keep

going until a solution is found… and if that fails, I’ll walk in the room

and hold my boom box high, and what happens next will blow your

mind!

BLANK CANVAS…Make yourself stand out from the crowd!
