From hospitals to schools and sidewalks to roads, many things in our communities are constructed using gravel that’s been pulled fromthe ground. Many wastes created by our communities are also disposed of in the ground. And that same ground is home to an essential natural resource: aquifers! GUSH for Grade

7’s focuses on water issues related to quarries and landfills and the impacts on humans and the natural environment. Students have a blast pumping water out of model quarries and learn first-hand how difficultit is to remove contaminants from water, all in a fun hands-on learning environment!

By exploring your school’s actual watershed, GUSH helps Grade 8 students think about water in their local environment and some of the factors affecting water quality and quantity nearby. With engaging & interactive activities, students build their own watershed models and use information from conservation authorities to assess the health of their local watershed.

Students also discover how wetlands regulate the quality and quantity of water within their watersheds, while understanding the varying roles and points of view of local governments, citizen groups and developers. Together, students learn just how complex watershed management can be!
