DC-bay!
Sonya Simpson presents an iPad mini to a student as they share a
special moment recognizing that each has been a positive influence in
the life of the other.
East View Elementary School Principal
Sonya Simpson was among DCPS
administrators who attended the Kentucky
Association for Assessment Coordinators
conference in Louisville last week.
As one of the session facilitators, DCPS
director of assessment, research and
curriculum development Jana Beth Francis
asked participants to reflect about a person
on whose life they believed they had had a
positive impact, and to write about that
experience and what it meant.
Sonya wrote about a little boy whom she had
met while serving as assistant principal at
Meadow Lands Elementary School. “He
knew that when he came to school every day,
there was at least one adult who loved him!”
Sonya remembers.
An anonymous donor from the Scott Trimble
Assessment Conference donated iPad minis
to give to these special people, and Sonya
accepted the responsibility of locating this
student to present the gift to him as a way of
“paying it forward” and continuing to be a
positive influence in his life.
Unknown to Sonya, while she was attending
the KAAC conference, the student whom she
remembered was enrolling at East View
Elementary School! Needless to say, there
was a heartwarming and very touching
reunion when Sonya returned to school and
was able to present the gift to this child.
This experience was a wonderful reminder to
ALL of us that when we take the time to
reach out and let a child know we care, we
are truly “paying it forward” as this child grows up to take his or her
place in the world, confident that he or she is a person of value who has
something positive to contribute.

A Message from
the SuperintendentDCPS schools will be closed
on Tuesday, Nov. 3 … but this
is not just a “day off.” This is
Election Day.
On a daily basis, we strive to
set a positive example for
students as we prepare them for
the day in which they will take
their places as successful,
contributing members of our
community. One of the greatest
privileges and responsibilities
we share as citizens of our nation is that of VOTING,
and I encourage you to join me in a commitment to
ensure that every voice is heard on Nov. 3.
Among the important races on the ballot this year is
that of governor of Kentucky, as well as secretary of
state, attorney general, state auditor, state treasurer
and commissioner of agriculture. There are several
issues that are important to education on the horizon,
including teacher retirement, the upcoming state
budget cycle and health care, among others.
There will be an opportunity to hear directly from
candidates about these issues and more at the Red,
White and Blue Picnic sponsored by the Greater
Owensboro Chamber of Commerce from 4 to 6 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 29, on the Daviess County Courthouse
Lawn. In case of rain, the event will move to the
Owensboro Convention Center.
Please plan to go to the polls on Nov. 3 as an
informed, engaged voter.
