Welcome to the 2015/2016 GVR Live! Performing Arts Season. We are thrilled to bring another amazing performing arts season to Southern Arizona!

Over the years, GVR Live! has evolved into a complete arts experience serving over 10,000 patrons each season. Our programming will continue to evolve with every new season by offering a rich variety of talent from all over the world and invigorating the arts in our community. For those who have attended performances for a season or a single event, thank you for your support.

This year we have an outstanding lineup of exceptional performances that includes a Grammy award winning vocalist, some GVR favorites, live theatre, and internationally acclaimed musicians.

Every artist has been chosen with care with the hope of delivering an unforgettable experience.

This season is certain to be the best yet with the vast array of talent and some program enhancements. This season, we are offering preshow lectures for all TSO performances, new seating sections, and education and outreach programs in the community, and are presenting all of this information in this beautifully-designed publication.

With every performance, GVR hopes to inspire, educate, stimulate emotions, invigorate the soul, and build a stronger relationship with you, the patron. This season was created with a great passion for the arts. It’s truly an honor for us to bring to you such high caliber entertainment.

We invite our season ticket holders to help us kick off the GVR Live! 2015/2016 performance season with cocktails in the West Center courtyard. It’s our way of thanking you for supporting GVR performances throughout the season, and helping us celebrate the arts in Green Valley! Chat with friends and enjoy wine and tasty appetizers while listening to our live entertainment that evening. This free event is open to season ticket holders only, and tickets are required for admission.

Jimmy Webb The Glen Campbell Years

Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb were an unexpected pairing: a multi-platinum recording artist and arch conservative with

a child prodigy long-hair stoner songwriter. Yet, Campbell and Webb became one of the most successful musical collaborations of all time.

Their mutual admiration and sincere affection for one another has yielded a 50-year friendship, more than 100 recordings and timeless chart-topping hits including “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “Where’s the Playground, Susie,” and “Honey Come Back,” among others. In this show, America’s songwriter, Jimmy Webb, shares the music and personal stories of a friendship that provided the soundtrack for generations.

Ethel Grace


In all its subtleties, the word “grace” connotes effortless beauty and charm, goodwill, a favor, and a reprieve. This program is a journey to redemption through music. In complex, stressful times and in a world overwhelmed by seemingly irreconcilable differences and unsustainable challenges, music provides both an immediate means of relief and a medium for real long-term healing and understanding. The centerpiece of this astonishing program is Ethel’s own adaptation of Ennio Morricone’s moving score to the 1986 film, The Mission. Morricone’s score was nominated for an Academy Award in 1986 and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. Favorite Ethel composers and collaborators, Mary Ellen Childs, Marcelo Zarvos, and Carlo Mombelli, along with original music by members of Ethel, fill out the program with works both searching and deeply joyful.

Mike Farris & the Roseland Rhythm Review The Soul of America


Mike Farris is a renaissance man who sings Motown to Memphis to Muscle Shoals in a musical tribute to soul music. He’s toured as lead singer for the southern rock band, Screaming Cheetah Wheelies, and the incomparable blues band, Double Trouble with Stevie Ray Vaughn.

In his solo career, Farris began to rediscover and reinterpret traditional black spiritual music by adding his own mix of vintage southern soul. For his efforts, Farris won the prestigious Americana Music Award for Best New & Emerging Artist, a Dove Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album of the Year and a 2015 Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album. Farris has contributed vocals to Patty Griffin’s Downtown Church as well as Rodney Crowell’s latest album, Tarpaper Sky. In 2011, he performed at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 16th Annual American Masters concert and at Austin City Limits for its inaugural “Hall of Fame Show” into which Willie Nelson and Double Trouble were inducted.

Mandy Barnett Heroines of Heartache: A Tribute to the Great Women of Song

Mandy Barnett, a native of Crossville, Tenn., started singing at five years old. Barnett’s style is rooted in the classic country and pop crooning of iconic singers. She delves into a song with a keen interpre-tative sense, studying the intricacies of its emotional

content and rendering a powerful performance through her full-bodied voice. Barnett has a successful solo career with several albums including, I’ve Got a Right to Cry, produced by legendary Owen Bradley. Her latest album, I Can’t Stop Loving You: The Songs of Don Gibson, is a salute to the iconic songs penned by the Country Music Hall of Fame member.

Barnett also starred as “Patsy Cline” in the musical production, Always…Patsy Cline, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville throughout the years. She tours regularly and is a frequent guest on the Grand Ole Opry. In this performance, Barnett salutes her influences, legendary female song stylists spanning multi-generations and musical genres. She sings favorites by Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Brenda Lee, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Carole King and Linda Ronstadt and more, along with selections from Barnett’s own highly-praised albums.

Let’s Misbehave: A Cole Porter Soirée with Mark Nadler

7 p.m. Tuesday, November 10

Internationally acclaimed, award-winning entertainer Mark Nadler explores the wit, romance and life of arguably the greatest of American songwriters: Cole Porter. Songs include such timeless hits as “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love), “Night And Day,” and “You’re The Top,”as well as many lesser known gems.

Nadler is an acclaimed singer, pianist, tap-dancer and comedian. He has an impressive list of Broadway and off-Broadway credits and has created and performed many one-man shows. Nadler has performed with the New York Pops Orchestra and has been a soloist with a variety of orchestras throughout the country, and has played in almost every significant night-club in New York City and Los Angeles, notably, four seasons at Sardi’s.

Nadler starred in and co-wrote the off-Broadway Gershwin revue, American Rhapsody, which was nominated for a Drama Desk and two Lucille Lortel Awards. His recent off-Broadway hit, I’m a Stranger Here Myself, has been honored with the 2013 Nightlife Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and two Broadway World Awards.

Ricky Nelson Remembered starring Matthew and Gunnar Nelson

Ricky Nelson Remembered is a unique multimedia entertainment event featuring the music of Ricky Nelson. The show includes Ricky Nelson’s hit songs “Hello Mary Lou,” “Travelin’ Man” and “Garden Party” performed by Ricky’s own twin sons, Matthew and Gunnar. With their rock band, Nelson, the brothers have achieved great success with a #1 hit, five Top 40 Billboard hits, four #1 MTV videos, and over 6.5 million in album sales worldwide.

In this exciting show, the Nelson brothers pay tribute to their legendary father by performing his hits and sharing never before seen big screen video footage of the Nelson family with interviews from celebrities influenced by Ricky Nelson. Come and celebrate the life of America’s original “Teen Idol.”

Kenny Endo Contemporary Ensemble

Kenny Endo is one of the leading personas in contemporary percussion and rhythm. He is the vanguard of the taiko genre, continuing to lead the way in this Japanese style of drumming as he marks his 40th year of performing and touring. A performer, composer, and teacher of taiko with numerous awards and accolades, Endo is a consummate artist, blending Japanese taiko with rhythms influenced from around the world into original melodies and improvisation.

Honored in Japan for both traditional and innovative Japanese taiko, Endo’s adventurous spirit stretches the genre with such influences as funk, jazz, Afro-Cuban and Hawaiian that mix seamlessly with his firm traditional roots for performances that are nuanced, brilliant, and exciting! “His ability to interweave…the traditional taiko style of playing with jazz drumming has enabled him to create an incredibly dynamic style of performing that captivated the audience and was literally breathtaking.” – Grateful Web, NY

Ken and Brad Kolodner

This dynamic father-son duo of Ken and Brad Kolodner push the boundaries of the Appalachian folk tradition by infusing their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful and unique interpretations of traditional and original Old-Time melodies and songs. Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players and Old-Time fiddlers in the U.S., Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner (formerly of the World folk trio, Helicon) has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, a rising star in the Old-Time claw hammer banjo world. The hypnotizing and groovy yet subtly complex combination of hammered dulcimer and banjo has captivated audiences across the country.

The Kolodners also perform on twin fiddles, the exotic hammered mbira, gourd banjo, banjola, guitar and vocals. The duo plays with a creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation. Their two recordings have each landed near or at the top of the Folk Music charts. Ken and Brad will be joined by their frequent collaborator, double bassist and Eastman graduate Alex Lacquement. “Father and son have reached that musical telepathy that family members can sometimes achieve. GVR’s New Year’s Eve Celebration with The Broadway Boys

7 p.m. Thursday, December 31

Imagine watching a show with unparalleled vocals, explosive energy and classic show tunes completely reinvented with a contemporary flair. You’ve just envisioned The Broadway Boys. The Broadway Boys were created in June of 2005 to play a single night in a New York City club. The overwhelming response and a packed bar forced the club to bring The Boys back again for another sold out evening. Realizing that this group had serious growth potential, The Boys decided to develop their product into the “symphony of sound” that they have become. The Broadway Boys is a collection of the hottest male voices currently working on the New York stage.

Through their dynamic vocal prowess and redefining arrangements, The Boys add elements of pop, funk, gospel, jazz, and folk to show tunes and classic pop songs. Performing in groups of six, The Boys are able to explore harmonies rarely presented by Broadway singers. The group introduces audiences to genres of music they may not be familiar with by fusing Broadway music and Pop styles and presenting new arrangements of well known songs. Now they’re taking their show across the country with their eyes set on performing

in new and exciting venues. With an explosive evening of entertainment, capable of large venue production, complete with choreography, sets, and light design, as well as intimate performances skills, the possibilities for The Broadway Boys are endless.

George Hanson, TSO conductor laureate, returns to explore the supernatural, the moon and the romance of spring! Robert Schumann’s Manfred Overture, inspired by Lord Byron’s haunting poem of the same name, and Symphony No. 1, Spring, inspired by the “spring of love,” according to the composer, are a perfect fit with the world premiere of the orchestral version of Lunar Reflections by Heather Schmidt. Instead of five movements, Schmidt says it’s in five “moons,” from the delicate beauty of a February Snow Moon to the clangorous energy of a July Thunder Moon.

Close to You: The Sound of Karen Carpenter with Joanne O’Brien

Do you remember the first time you heard the voice of Karen Carpenter? Do you remember the feeling you had the first time you experienced that sound? Let this show take you right back to that time and make it a yesterday once more. This is a celebration of those songs and “that” sound told through the velvet voice of singer/actress Joanne O’Brien. Through a cavalcade of iconic classics including “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Top of the World” and “Yesterday Once More,” O’Brien illuminates the musical diversity and political climate of that time in history when the world first fell in love with the magical sound of Karen Carpenter.

Renowned bassist Mark Schatz – who has performed with Nickel Creek, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Maura O’Connell, Tony Rice, John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Tim and Mollie O’Brien – delights audiences as he showcases his skills as a banjoist and clogger. Claire’s seasoned sound is simultaneously unpretentious and richly textured. It’s a down-home, front porch sensibility – until you realize that it’s a rare front porch, indeed, that has ever hosted musicians of this caliber.

L.A. Theatre Works Bram Stoker’s Dracula


Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, was published with little popular fanfare. Critics, however, praised the author and put Stoker in the category of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. But audiences didn’t flock to the tale of this otherworldly being that feeds off others to preserve eternal life until the early-mid 1900s, when film versions generated enormous press for the title. This gothic horror is a classic for all time and has spawned hundreds of spin-offs in modern culture from Twilight to True Blood.

In Charles Morey’s acclaimed adaptation, Count Dracula slips quietly into Victorian London with a cargo of his native Transylvanian soil, necessary for rest between his victims. The city seems helpless against his frightful power, and only one man, the smart and resourceful Dr. Van Helsing, can stop the carnage. But to do this, he must uncover the vampire’s lair and pierce Dracula’s heart with a wooden stake, setting up an epic confrontation of good versus evil. Delivering a personable, high energy performance comprised of tender country ballads, hard driving bluegrass, swing, and even some Southern Appalachian clog dancing, the Claire Lynch Band is high on the bluegrass world’s A-List. This stellar ensemble is made up of musicians with a long list of accolades including three International Bluegrass Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year awards and two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album.

There’s no denying that everyone has a Beatles song attached to an event in their life. Through laughter and personal stories, Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience connects the audience and performers in a way like no other. Each performance is a unique and remarkable event with the audience requesting the songs each night. The Beatles music is the

soundtrack to our lives, and Yesterday and Today gets to the heart of that.

With dead-on musical precision, audiences will be immersed in the sights, sounds and memories of the 1960s and their favorite Beatles songs. This is a tribute show that focuses on the music of the Beatles – there are no wigs, costumes or accents. GVR Live! fan favorite, Billy McGuigan returns to play the Beatles songs that you know and love.

Voice If Music Be the Food of Love

Voice, the acclaimed British vocal ensemble from Oxford, England, formed in 2006. The trio explores repertoire that is diverse while being complementary. The group performs works by Hildegard of Bingen and other early masters, traditional songs and arrangements from around the world, and contemporary compositions. In 2013, they launched their debut album Musical Harmony, a carefully crafted selection of songs defining Voice’s distinctive sound, described as “fresh and really rather beautiful” according to Andrew McGregor of BBC Radio 3 Summer CD Review.

The trio’s latest collaborative project, If Music Be the Food of Love, sees the creation of five new pieces on the theme of love by British composers. This new program will include songs both new and old to explore the beauty, heartache, and humor of love. The trio focuses the program on the extraordinary role of women in music as composers, performers and muses. The concert includes Shakespearean song (in honor of the 400th anniversary of his death), medieval music, folksong arrangements from the UK and Ireland, and contemporary repertoire including a set of newly commissioned works by British composers, Stevie Wishart, Helen Chadwick, Emily Levy, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, and Marcus Davidson.

This program combines romance, childhood memories from France, and a celebration! Inspired by a romantic attraction, Glinka’s Valse-Fantasie transforms a waltz into an expansive symphonic poem with an incredible range of emotions. Dedicated to his three year-old daughter, Debussy’s signature mellifluous melodies evoke childhood memories in the Children’s Corner. Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony, Reformation, ends the program on a celebratory note.

Live in Central Park is a celebration of historical, iconic concert events from New York’s Central Park, recreated using bona fide set-lists. These are not impressions or impersonations; but a revisit with the music that made these nights magical. Lee Lessack and Johnny Rodgers recreate Simon and Garfunkel’s legendary concert in Central Park from September 19, 1981. This concert was a collection of Simon and Garfunkel’s best known hits from their long and illustrious careers including “Mrs. Robinson,” “Slip Slidin’ Away,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “The Sound of Silence.” In this unforgettable event, Lessack and Rodgers will perform the greatest set list from one of the most

JazzReach presents Stolen Moments: The First 100 Years of Jazz featuring Metta Quintet

Established in 1994, JazzReach is a nationally recognized New York City-based 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, performance, creation and teaching of jazz music. Season Tickets Concessions Discounts Season ticket holders receive a 50 percent discount on all concession purchases at all GVR Live! performances and events. This discount excludes concessions at free GVR member movies.

Accessibility The West Center, including the auditorium and parking lot, are ADA accessible. ADA designated parking is available in the north and west parking lots. GVR makes all reasonable accommodations for those with special needs, including those with service animals as definedbytheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct,withadvancenotice.PleaseinformtheBoxOfficewhenyou purchase tickets if wheelchair accessible and companion seating is required.

The House Manager will identify patrons with accessibility needs prior to opening the auditorium doors for seating. Patrons who have accessibility needs will be seated with the assistance of the House Manager and volunteer ushers.

West Center Auditorium is equipped with two Assisted Listening Systems, the Ampetronic Induction Loop System (known as the Induction Loop) and the Williams Hearing Assist System. General Information• All performances are open to the general public.

• All GVR Live! events are held at Green Valley Recreation’s West Center Auditorium, located at 1111 W Via Arcoiris, near the intersection of Continental Rd. and La Canada in Green Valley.

• Doors open approximately one (1) hour prior to the performance or as indicated on the ticket. Every effort will be made to begin all performances on time.

• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the house manager. Late seating may be unavailable at the discretion of the performing artist. Patrons are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the performance start time to ensure entrance and seating.

• Artists, dates, times and programs are subject to change without advance notice.

• The use of still, video and audio recording devices of any kind is strictly prohibited.

• Kindly silence your electronic devices prior to entering West Center Auditorium as a courtesy to performers and guests.

• Cinema booster seats are available for children to provide a better view. A cinema seat may be requested by contacting the house manager. Children under six years are not permitted at performances. Exceptions may apply for some special engagements.

Another way GVR is reaching out to the community is by having our performers conduct workshops and lectures at local area schools. These experienced artists share their knowledge, experience and talents through performance-based demonstrations, hands on workshops, and lectures to expose students to theartsandentertainmentfieldandfosteragreaterappreciation for the performing arts. GVR also works with educators to customize workshops and presentationsthatwillbenefitstudents.

GVR is seeking other opportunities to partner with a variety of community organizations by hosting workshops and lectures that help enrich our community as a whole. We invite you to contact GVR about your interest in the arts.

Volunteering The GVR Live! Performing Arts Season brings an exciting array of live entertainers and performers to Southern Arizona to entertain us, bond us together through our experience, and enrich our lives and community!

If you share our passion for the arts, we invite you to serve as a Program Volunteer. Our volunteers assist us during performances by greeting and seating patrons, helping with merchandise and concession sales, and providing general assistance to guests. No experience is necessary as we will train you. The only requirements are a willingness to learn and to ensure our guests have a pleasurable experience while attending GVR’s performances.

GVR Live! In the Community GVR’s goal is to strengthen the community through arts education and outreach programs by promoting the arts well beyond our role as a presenting organization. Through outreach opportunities throughout the community, we hope to promote a greater appreciation for the arts and build a healthy and thriving arts community.

One of the ways we do this is by bringing live monthly performances to the residents of Silver Springs Assisted Living Center, who may be unable to attend performances at GVR’s West Center. Since 2012, GVR has scheduled entertainers to give a one hour performance at Silver Springs. Residents are delighted to be able to experience top notch performances from the comfort and convenience of their residence. Our goal is to double the number of performances offered at Silver Springs.
