BY GUY CURTRIGHTStaff Correspondent

There’s no gender gap inGwinnett County highschool basketball.

Both the girls and the boysreign.

Schools from the countyhave won 28 girls state titlesand 18 boys state champi-onships, with 29 Georgia HighSchool Association crownscoming in the past 11 years.

Girls teams have taken 20 ofthose recent championships, including three last season. Theboys captured two titles lastMarch, giving Gwinnett a stag-gering five of the six statechampionships in which countyschools were eligible.

Wesleyan won both boys andgirls titles in Class A, becomingthe first school to sweep titlestwice. The Wolves also wonboth in 2008 while in Class AA.

Actually, Gwinnett may havejust missed two schools sweepchampionships. Norcross wonthe Class AAAAA girls cham-pionship and the boys weredeprived of getting a chance tomatch it because of a contro-versial ending to their quarterfi-nal game against eventual ClassAAAAA boys winner Milton.

Needless to say, the bar hasbeen set very high.

Nowhere higher than at Wes-leyan, a private school locatedacross Spalding Drive fromNorcross in the Peachtree Cor-ners area of west Gwinnett.

Coach Jan Azar’s girls teamshave won three straight statechampionships and seven innine years. The boys team, coached by Skip Matherly, hastwo titles in three years.

“Success breeds success,”said Azar, who is also assistantathletics director. “We’re not incompetition. I think we feed offeach other.”

Wesleyan certainly isn’t inthe spotlight by itself. Gwinnetthas had numerous runs ofexcellence in recent years.

Collins Hill won five girlstitles in seven years, capped bythree straight championships incurrent Connecticut All-Ameri-ca Maya Moore’s final seasonsand a No. 1 national ranking in2007.

Angie Hembree coached theCollins Hill girls to their firstthree titles, then led the Nor-cross girls to their champi-onship last season.

The Norcross boys won threeconsecutive Class AAAAAtitles from 2006 to 2008. TheWesleyan girls are going for afourth straight championshipsthis season, while the Bufordgirls are trying for three in arow in Class AA.

The recent run of success ascoincided with Gwinnett Coun-ty’s rapid growth. But basket-ball is part of Gwinnett’s ruralroots.

The first high school in thecounty to win a state footballtitle was Buford in 1978. Bythen, Gwinnett had alreadyclaimed 13 boys and girls statebasketball titles.

Greater Atlanta Christiandominated small school compe-tition in the 1970s and early1980s, winning five girls cham-pionships and three boys titles. With 12 total championships inbasketball, the Spartans leadthe county.

GAC won the Class AA boystitle last season and the girls, who have won three state titlesin the past decade, made theFinal Four.

Eddie Martin, a CentralGwinnett standout in the early1970s, coached Norcross to itsthree straight titles before win-ning another in his second sea-son as GAC coach. He’s seenfirst-hand the growth in thecounty and its phenomenalrecent success in basketball.

“Basketball has always beenstrong as far back as I canremember,” Martin said.“Schools were small back thenand maybe that worked againstfootball. Basketball doesn’ttake as many players.

“When the county started togrow, there was a lull there forawhile. But with the unbeliev-able growth the last decade orso there has been a phenomenalrun of success in basketball. It’samazing really.”

Schools now have multiple

gyms, giving the boys and girlsplenty of practice times. Thereis no rivalry, just mutualrespect.

“We’re in this together,”Martin said. “You want bothteams do to well. It sets thetone.”

No area of metro Atlanta hascome close to matching Gwin-nett in basketball during thepast decade and the run doesn’tappear anywhere close to stop-ping.

Maybe someday the countywill go 6-for-6, sweeping ClassAAAAA, AA and A. That mayseem impossible, but don’t betagainst it. Who would havebelieved what Gwinnett hasalready accomplished?

PATRIOTSBOYS

■ Region: 8-AAAAA■ Coach:Greg Phillips ■ 2009-10 record:8-21■ Returning regulars:Yonel Brown, Jr., 5-9Brandon Thompson,Jr., 6-1Ivan Harden, Sr., 6-0Ben Wibonele, Jr. 5-10■ Other players towatch:Devan Campbell, Sr., 6-3Tyler Rogers, Jr., 6-5Tim Rowe, Fr., 6-8C.J. Foster, Soph., 6-1Zack Weiner, Jr., 6-1■ Outlook: With littleexperience or size,Berkmar started 1-15last season beforeturning things aroundunder first-year coachGreg Phillips and

making the state tour-nament thanks to anupset of South Gwin-nett in the region tour-ney. All except onestarter returns and thePatriots will no longerbe at such a disad-vantage inside withthe improvement of 6-foot-3 Devan Camp-bell and the additionsof 6-foot-5 TylerRogers and 6-foot-8freshman Tim Rowe.■ Worth noting:Leading scorers YonelBrown (14.7 ppg) andBrandon Thompson(14.5 ppg) return, butthe juniors won’t haveto shoulder as muchof the scoring loadthis season with Berk-mar’s improved depthand more options onoffense. The Patriotsare an up-and-comingprogram with just acouple of seniors.

GIRLS

■ Region: 8-AAAAA■ Coach: Todd McCutcheon ■ 2009-10 record: 10-19■ Returning regulars:Ka’Vonne Towns, Sr., 5-10Teanna Robinson, Sr., 6-4 (pictured)Kenisha Watkins, Sr., 5-7Shamicka Martin, Sr., 5-9Jazmine Green, Jr., 5-10 ■ Other players to watch:Victoria Faulkner, Sr., 5-9Samantha Aquino, Sr., 5-6■ Outlook: Todd McCutcheon takesover for his wife, Julie, and inherits aveteran team with all five startersreturning. Leading a strong seniorclass are Ka’Vonne Towns, in herfourth varsity season, and 6-foot-4Teanna Robinson. Towns will play incollege at Chattanooga and Robinsonat Mercer.■ Worth noting: The Patriots madethe state tournament for the fourthstraight year last season despite a los-ing record during a very streaky sea-son. Inexperience was a problem ayear ago, with Towns the only return-ing regular and just two seniors on the

team. But that certainly won’t be thecase this time. Now a lack of depth isthe only concern.

When Lexie Brown moved toAtlanta from Orlando, it wasn’tthat surprising that she landed at aschool in Gwinnett County.

As the child of a former NBAplayer, the talented sophomoreguard fits right in.

Brown, who has already commit-ted to the University of Maryland,is just one of several players withpro basketball bloodlines who playfor Gwinnett teams.

Wesleyan has two girls — juniorsHolli Wilkins and Kaelyn Causwell.Holli is the daughter of NBA playerGerald Wilkins and the niece ofAtlanta Hawks great DominiqueWilkins. Kaelen’s father is formerNBA player Duane Causwell.

The Wesleyan boys team alsohas the child of a former NBAplayer, this one an all-star. MarkPrice’s son Hudson joined theWolves this season as a sophomoreafter transferring from Marist.

Both college prospects, the 6-footHolli Wilkins and 6-4 KaelynCauswell have already won two ClassA state titles each with Wesleyan.

The twin children of former NBAplayer Antonio Davis won statechampionships last season as fresh-men, although not at the same school.

Kaela Davis, who has committedto Tennessee, helped lead Norcrossto the Class AAAAA state title lastseason as a 6-2 freshman beforetransferring to Buford, the ClassAA champ, this fall.

A.J. Davis goes to GreaterAtlanta Christian and the 6-foot-6forward will move into the startinglineup as a sophomore after being akey reserve on last season’s ClassAA boys state championship team.

The newcomer with an NBApedigree is Lexie Brown. Thedaughter of former NBA guard DeeBrown helped Dr. Phillips HighSchool to the Class AAAAAAFinal Four in Florida as a freshman,

averaging 14.1 points per game. Both Mark Price and Dee Brown

still are connected to the NBA.Price, the former Georgia Techgreat, is an assistant coach withGolden State. Brown coaches in theNBA Development League withSpringfield, Mass.

Coaching the son or daughter ofan NBA player can present chal-lenges. In this case, the father real-ly does know what he’s talkingabout if he doesn’t like something.

But Wesleyan girls coach JanAzar says that she has been veryfortunate.

“They are fantastic fans,” Azarsaid of Gerald Wilkins and DuaneCauswell. “They don’t interfere atall.”

The Wesleyan girls are going fora fourth straight state champi-onship. The Buford girls are seek-ing a third straight.

Adding Davis to a team thatalready included fellow Tennesseerecruit Andraya Carter will certain-ly help.

“I’ve never coached an NBAplayer’s daughter,” Buford coachGene Durden said. “I’m excited toget the chance.”

Meadowcreekhas made the state tournament fivestraight years under coach Billy Davis, posting a 113-26 record during thatstretch. But the Mustangs haven’t made itpast the Class AAAAA quarterfinals, whichthey reached in 2006. This season’s teamhave plenty of height with 6-foot-9 seniorTroidell Carter and 6-foot-7 Tevin Glass.■ Worth noting: Meadowcreek moves

from Region 8-AAAAA to 7-AAAAA,putting the Mustangs in the same regionwith nemesis Norcross. The Blue Devilsended Meadowcreek’s season with a 66-61 victory in the second round of the statetournament last season and beat them inthe first round the year before and in thesecond round in 2007 and 2006.

Meadowcreekis led by junior Freddie Banks and seniorLaBrea McKay, both strong rebounders.Banks had a good summer and will becounted on to be the team’s top offensivethreat. Team chemistry should be astrength for the Mustangs.■ Worth noting: Meadowcreek is a longway from its glory days of the early 2000s,but coach Adrianne Long is doing her bestto get the girls program back on track. TheMustangs made the state tournament threeconsecutive seasons from 2001 to 2003,finishing as state runner-up in 2002.

■ Region: 7-AAAAA■ Coach: Chad Rogers ■ 2009-10 record: 18-9■ Returning regulars:Brandon Hayman, Sr., 6-3Ronald Wamer, Sr., 6-2Daniel Braschler, Jr., 6-4■ Other players to watch:Daniel Loudermilk, Jr., 6-6Paul Evans, Jr., 6-0■ Outlook: The Hawks couldn’t survive the rigorsof ultra-tough 7-AAAAA last season, a loss toNorth Gwinnett in the region quarterfinals costingthem a state berth. But three starters return andMill Creek hopes to make a playoff run this time.Brandon Hayman, who will play for Samford, leadsthe way. The versatile guard averaged 12 pointsand 4.1 assists last season. The other returningstarters are Ronald Wamer, a dogged defender, and rugged inside player Daniel Braschler. All threehave GPAs of 3.6 or better.■ Worth noting: Coach Chad Rogers is looking forkey contributions from Daniel Loudermilk and PaulEvans, reserves a year ago as sophomores. Evansis expected to take over at point guard and Louder-milk is a 6-foot-6 forward who can really leap. TheHawks will need the help with the graduation of lead-ing scorer Kyle Speller, a walk-on at Georgia Tech.

Simmons, a freshman vol-leyball player at Clemson, averaged15.9 points and 11.4 rebounds lastseason and the Hawks won’t have alot of height this season. They do havea lot of speed, however, and an abun-dance of talented outside players with

potential. AliciaBrookins and TamarrWilliams each aver-aged about sevenpoints per game ayear ago and SierraMenzies returns atpoint guard afteraveraging 3.2 assistsper game. TheHawks also add tal-ented freshman Jas-mine Carter. Williamsand ChristinaMcDannald areaccurate outsideshooters.■ Worth noting: MillCreek beat eventualstate champion Nor-cross twice last sea-

son and won the Region 7-AAAAA titlefor the third straight time. The Hawkshave made it to the state tournament fiveconsecutive seasons under coach Ash-ley Phillips, losing in the Elite Eight forthe second time last season after mak-ing the Final Four in 2008. A key for MillCreek this season will be the develop-ment of sophomore India Dillard inside.
