Quality Care &Clinical Excellence

Dear neighbors,

Gwinnett Medical Center has been transforming healthcare in this community for more than 65 years. We continue to provide the quality of care and clinical excellence that this community has come to expect, and the expansion and innovation that we saw in 2010 was no different.

The Heart & Vascular Center at GMC-Lawrenceville is taking shape, as construction continues on the 40,000-square-foot facility. With an anticipated cost of $33 million, the Heart & Vascular Center will be state-of-the-art, housing the latest in technological advancements. From the beginning, the community has been very supportive of GMC’s efforts to bring open heart surgery to Gwinnett, and we look forward to the Heart & Vascular Center’s opening in 2012.

In an effort to provide comprehensive imaging to the community in one convenient location, the 631 Imaging Center, which will include the Gwinnett Breast Center’s Marion Allison Webb Center for Screening Mammography and Sandra J. Strickland Diagnostic Center, will occupy the first and second floors of the Gwinnett Physicians Center, which is located adjacent to GMC-Lawrenceville.

It has only been four short years since Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital was replaced by Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth, and during that time, there has been a great deal of transformation. The Center for Surgical Weight Management at GMC-Duluth performed the first bariatric surgery in Gwinnett in March. Since then, dozens of individuals have improved their health and transformed their lives through this program, which includes extensive support pre- and post-surgery.

GMC’s Sports Medicine program continues to grow, and we have extended our partnership with area high schools to provide athletic trainers to Gwinnett and North Fulton schools, while the ImPACT concussion testing program continues to help athletes return safely to play.

Gwinnett Medical Center celebrated several anniversaries this year, including the 25th anniversary of GMC-Lawrenceville and the 20th anniversary of the GMC Foundation.

As we move into 2011, we look forward to continuing to transform healthcare in our community.

Sincerely,

Philip R. Wolfe, FACHEPresident & CEO

New Partnership with Medical Students

Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth has begun a new medical student teaching program in partnership with Georgia Campus-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). For several years medical students have been rotating through the hospitalist service at GMC-Duluth for their core internal medicine rotation, but as hospitalists became busier there was less time for teaching. To address this issue and to develop a more comprehensive approach, PCOM hired a physician who is also a professor to oversee the new program. This partnership marks a new phase in a growing relationship between Gwinnett Medical Center and Georgia Campus-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine to provide training for healthcare practitioners of the future.

Get Back in the Action

GMC-Duluth is home to the state’s leading sports medicine program. In addition to having sports medicine fellowship-trained surgeons and radiologists, GMC-Duluth provides full-time athletic trainers to local high schools. GMC also offers the ImPACT Concussion Testing program, a breakthrough technology designed to manage concussion treatment and ensure a safe, timely return to play for injured athletes.

Gwinnett Medical Center is the official healthcare provider for the Gwinnett Gladiators, the Gwinnett Braves and the Atlanta Tennis Championships. For more information, visit gwinnettsportsmed.com.

Gwinnett Medical Center is committed to providing the highest level of care possible. To do this, there are numerous measures we take to ensure our staff and physicians are providing medical care at exceptional levels, our patients are receiving the best care and we as an organization are doing everything we can to transform healthcare. In 2010, we were recognized with the following clinical quality awards:
