- Favor with King of Scotland James V
and was granted a right to become a
king of Gypsies
- In historical records, written as ‘Johnnie Faa’ or ‘John Faw’
- Had power to enforce laws and rules over people
- When there were conflicts among Gypsies, most of them were resolved
by the Gypsy King⇨same as John Faa in the novel
2) Roping at Zaal and royal families
● Roping: gyptian’s gathering
● Zaal: parley room
➡ ‘Gypsy Palace’ at Kirk Yetholm
- Some gyptians lived inside and
gatherings were held regularly.
- Esther Faa Blyth, the Queen of the
Gypsies built this palace
- By the mid-1700s, this village (Yethlom) had become the home of Faas.
- In 1898 the queen was replaced by his
son Charles Faa Blyth
- Died in 1902 and he was the last king of
Scottish gypsies
