“Gwynn Murrill's unique skill as an artist has been her ability to bridge the gap between the abstract and the figural in ways which permit her to retain the pleasures and advantages of both”, writes author, Peter Clothier.
Murrill’s animal figures serve as points of departure for the exploration of form, becoming vessels, which reduced to their most intrinsic lines and shapes, elegantly echo the essence of her subject.
HerHer initial sculptures of the early 1970s, carved from found wood, laminated into large blocks, gave way to stone and marble pieces as Murrill’s process evolved through the early 1980s. Murrill is now best known for her timeless animal forms cast in bronze. SaraSara Campbell, Senior Curator at the Norton Simon Museum reflected upon Murrill’s work, “There is vitality in the simplest figure as individual characteristics give way to universal attributes.” Clothier goes on to remark, “Murrill makes the abstract real for us, her work is one of the clearest statements I know that beauty is in itself enough, that the purely aesthetic response is not purely intellectual, but deeply emotional too.” Murrill’sMurrill’s work is held by numerous private collections and can been seen in a number of public commissions throughout the U.S. and across the globe.
Her accolades include: the Guggenheim Fellowship, an Individual Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Prix di Roma Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, and purchase awards from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
