Borescope Inspection Tips and Techniques

The following illustrations provide examples of some basic borescoping tips andtechniques successfully used by trained inspectors to competently conduct athorough inspection of all JTSD combustion chambers,

. When inserting or withdrawing theborescope and moving from one combus-tion chamber to the next via the crossovertubes, ensure that the borescope is re-tracted into the guide tube and that thetube and borescope are properly alignedwith the opening being traversed.

. It is advisable during inspections toposition the optic side (not the light side)of the borescope tip closer to the com-bustion chamber surface. This is essentialwhen inspecting the area under thelouvers.

Note: Cracks viewed at a shallow angle (viewing angle parallel with combustionchamber surface) may appear as a raised or displaced surface. If possible, attempt to view suspected area from other angles by repositioning theborescope. See Alert Service Bulletin 5639 for additional guidelines inperforming effective borescope inspections.
