1 April 2015 Letter to Parents No.: 059/2015 Dear Parents, Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew at Huamin Primary School

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew on 23 March 2015. As the leader among the core group of founding fathers of Independent Singapore, Mr Lee has been pivotal in shaping the course of our nation’s history. He had dedicated his life to the building of a prosperous and cohesive country where Singaporeans can pursue the ideals of democracy, justice, peace, progress and equality.

As a mark of respect to Mr Lee, our State flag and school flag were flown at half-mast from 23 to 29 March 2015. An observance ceremony at the flag-raising ceremony on 24 March 2015 was conducted to observe a minute of silence; after the pledge is taken to allow all staff and pupils to reflect on, and pay respect to, the immense contributions of Mr Lee in our nation-building.

Teachers shared with the pupils, the contributions and the legacy of Mr Lee Kuan Yew on both 25

and 27 March 2015 respectively. Pupils did their thank-

you cards for Mr Lee Kuan Yew, which were in turn collated into a giant card. This was presented as a tribute from Huamin Primary School at the Yishun Community Tribute site at Yishun Hardcourt.

Huamin Primary School’s Special Tribute Card to our late Mr Lee Kuan Yew at Yishun Hardcourt on 27 March 2015.

On 26 March 2015, 15 pupils led by our School Principal, Mdm Noorismawaty together with Ms Quek, Mrs Vishnu, Mdm Kasimah and Mr Kumar, attended the Lying-In-State ceremony at Parliament House where they paid their last respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Through this experience, pupils were able to appreciate the immense contributions made by one of our founding fathers of independent Singapore and the sacrifices he had made for us. We hope our pupils will be inspired to live up to the same ideals and continue his legacy.

Speak Good English Week The Speak Good English Week will be held from 8 April to 15 April. Our theme this year is 'Grammar Rules Matter. Use Good English'. Pupils can look forward to many English-based activities held in school that aim to trigger their interest in English and also, encourage them to consciously practise speaking good English. Here are some ideas to encourage your child, yourself and everyone around you to complement the message of Speaking Good English: 1) Common Mistakes In Grammar Mistakes in everyday conversations often carry on in your child’s work in school. Find ways to help your child identify common mistakes in casual conversations so as not to repeat them in school and formal communications.

2) Sharing Family Stories With Your Child Family stories are a great way for you to communicate and bond with your child. These stories can also pass on values to them. Sharing your family stories is an invaluable experience that will help your child form powerful memories that they will have all their lives. 3) Fun with Phonics Practice Practice makes perfect! The more your child familiarises himself/herself with the different components of Phonics, the faster your child's reading and spelling skills will improve. P5 Cultural Immersion Trip to Malacca 2015

From 5 - 7 March 2015, the P5 cohort went on a cultural immersion trip to Malacca in Malaysia. Apart from learning about the country, its rich heritage and culture, our pupils also developed a deeper sense of appreciation of what we have and a stronger bond with their teachers and friends. The pupils enjoyed the trip immensely and looked forward to more of such trips in future.

Singapore World Water Day 2015

On 8 March 2015, a group of our pupils led by teacher Mdm Sarah Seah and

VP (Admin), Mdm Adeline Chee, participated in the Singapore World Water

Day, organised by Alexandra Health System (AHS). As part of our Values In

Action (VIA) programme in our community, we started our Sunday morning

with a brisk walk and litter-picking at Blk 447 in Yishun. A/P Muhammad

Faishal Ibrahim, MP for Nee Soon GRC was the Guest-of-Honour at the

event.

Huamin Primary School also organized celebrations within the school to

celebrate World Water Day from 8-13 March 2015. Under the guidance of

Mdm Katherine Lim and Ms Hazi, green monitors from P3-6 set up booths at

the foyer to raise pupils’ awareness about the importance of water through

the 3Rs and encouraged pupils to pledge to conserve water.

International Friendship Day

We will be commemorating International Friendship Day (IFD) on 10 April 2015. It is aimed to provide a good opportunity for pupils to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of pupils of different nationalities. Here at Huamin Primary School, we aim to nurture in our pupils the spirit of friendship and collaboration with their international peers. Booths representing countries from all over the world such as America, Australia, Iran, Japan and New Zealand and, will be set up for our pupils to have a first-hand experience on the culture of these countries which include their unique food, music, dance, games and costumes. We will also have a Polaroid booth where pupils can take pictures with their friends at a cost of $1 during recess. The amount collected will be donated to a charity organisation of the school’s choice. We seek your support in giving your child/ward additional pocket money for this good cause!

Parenting Tips Children and Social Media With the pervasive use of smartphones among Singaporeans these days, our children and youth are now more connected than ever. Applications such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter provide opportunities for self-expression, communication with others within and outside of Singapore as well as even buying and selling things online. However, this connectedness does not come without its threats. Cyber-addiction, cyber-bullying and misuse of technology are on the rise. Below are some tips to help parents encourage cyber wellness among children. 1) Limit the use of smartphones

Parents should set specific times when smartphones can be used. It has been observed that pupils use applications to send messages randomly and without specific or important purposes to each other causing them to be distracted from completing their tasks successfully or sleeping early. Therefore, usage of mobile devices should be discouraged during meal times, during study and before bedtime.

2) Regularly check the browsing history

Parents can also keep tabs on the websites by checking your child’s browsing history. This will provide clues to parents on the type of

websites your child is surfing and manage possible worrying patterns such as surfing inappropriate websites.

3) Encourage activities beyond just playing mobile applications or computer games It is common nowadays for children to spend their leisure time on mobile devices or the computer at the expense of other beneficial activities. As such, parents can encourage your child to also spend time reading a book, playing a board game or card games or even playing sports like basketball or badminton.

4) Have an open communication with your child

While the school provides cyber wellness education to pupils, parents can support by having regular dialogue with your child about their usage of smartphones, what they enjoy about the applications and struggles that they have with using them. You can also remind them on the acceptable and unacceptable conduct online as well as how to protect themselves by not sharing their passwords or personal details with others.
