Greetings From The ReeveHappy 160th Anniversary to Howick Township. This year we all celebrate our time living in Howick. I hope all residents, former residents and guests can join in the many activities and fun that are planned for July 29 to July 31st.

On behalf of Council, I thank the 160th Committee for the vision they had to plan this weekend, and all the work they are doing to make it happen. Also, thanks to our community groups who are organizing the various activities.

On a historic milestone such of this, we look back with thankfulness on all the good things we have enjoyed together.

Howick Township has been, and continues to be, a great place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Best wishes for an exciting, fun and safe weekend.

The planning committee has spent countless hours preparing the details for our anniversary weekend! As the celebration approaches we can’t help but get ex-cited about all the activities that will bring everyone of all ages together again!

Co-chairs Aaron Harding (left) and Blair Gibson (right) brought the entire commit-tee together through their enthusiasm and high energy. Seeking out individuals that would complete a task and have fun while doing it - totally completed this volunteer committee.

When you hear, “What’s Happening in Howick?” ... remember to tell them “It’s Happening in Howick!

This celebration is about bringing your family, your friends and your neighbours all together. Tell all - “it’s happening’’ in Howick the last weekend in July.

We’ll see you there!!!

we were delighted to be invited by the Howick 160th Committee to host our annual Community BBQ as part of the anniversary celebrations of our township. Our Community BBQ began several years ago as a way of giving our community a ‘taste’ of God’s goodness and it certainly has been a privilege to serve our community in this way.

Over the years there has been a variety of features that have provided entertainment and education. Our very first Community BBQ was hosted at the ball park in Gorrie with a display of ‘Mighty Machines’ from around our community. Other features have included, police dogs, birds of prey, the famous pumpkin canon, live music and emergency personnel. we have enjoyed working with the Howick Fire Department who have brought the fire trucks and provided other demonstrations and activities. A highlight was our visit from hockey legend, Paul Henderson back in 2013.

In 2012 the Community BBQ moved from the Gorrie Ball Park to the Howick Community Centre, which offers more protection from poor weather and greater access to water and hydro. This location has been a great, central location for bringing our community together!

Each year the meal has been provided through the generosity of our church family. we have been grateful for the local businesses

who have provided door prizes and other gifts for those who attend. while there has never been a cost for this event, our community has donated thousands of dollars, 100% of which are funneled to local needs, including our fire department and to underprivileged children.

So why do we do it? The Community BBQ has always required a small army of volunteers from our church family, and although it has stretched us, it has given us the joy of working together as a family and giving something back in light of all that God has given to us. The Bible proclaims the ‘Good News’ that Jesus gave his life for the salvation and forgiveness of all who will place their trust in Him.

At Gorrie Bible Fellowship, our desire is for all in our community to hear and respond to this Good News. The Community BBQ is our way of showing Howick Township that we care! we are not perfect people and we are far from a perfect church, but we have come to know the forgiveness and salvation that Jesus offers, and we want all in our community to experience this as well.

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him” Psalm 34:8. This is our desire for the Community BBQ. Come and enjoy a meal on us. Taste and see that the Lord is good!

2:00pm– 3km Fun Obstacle Course

EVENT SCHEDULESaTURDaY

Howick is a tri-village metropolis that enjoys the spacious living and fresh air of the country but has all of its needs covered in a relatively short distance. Being healthy and active is an important fact of life and Howick has lots of options to help its residents keep fit. There are a variety of sports for both young and old that are enjoyable, sprout comradery and can even be competitive. Baseball, soccer, hockey, broomball, figure skating and lacrosse are just a few. Cheering on the players, walking around the field/arena helps with morale and is a place to get moving. with this beautiful hot weather, a dip in the pool is a refreshing option and there is aqua fit to participate in that is great for joint challenges. If sports are not your cup of tea, Studio 87 has a beautiful gym and a great personal trainer, Vanessa Schefter. She has a variety of classes or you can work privately with her to achieve your fitness goals. If having fun and shaking your bootie while getting lost in the music sounds good - Tina Pruden holds Zumba classes from the fall through to the spring. On any given day you can see people enjoying the solitude of a run or walk on their own or groups chatting and walking. There have even been some walk, cycling and run clubs which are a cost

effective way of getting healthy and meeting people in the community.

OBSTACLE COURSEwith all this in mind, a desire to challenge oneself and follow the current trend – a fun 3 km obstacle course/race has been planned for the Howick 160th Celebration on July 30th. Create a team, challenge your family or go solo. You can walk, run or crawl as it will be suitable for most fitness levels. If you get to an obstacle that makes you uncomfortable – just go around it. A water/snack station will be available half way through the course and a celebratory beverage awaits you at the finish line. we’d love to know how many people will be participating so I urge you to google Howick 160th Anniversary for the link to sign up. There is a minimal charge of $15. The website accepts credit cards or if you want to pay cash we will have forms & waivers at Bare Necessities, Boyd’s Farm Supply, Pentastic Motors, Watson’s Home Hardware and Wroxeter Variety. So have some fun, revel in the accomplishment and earn a drink. Hope to see you there.

Dale’sCompost

This compost

gets its name

honestly, from

the high nitrogen

content provided by the

feathers, blood, and other

inedibles from Schefter

Poultry Processing. (A form of

nitrogen can be used in the

making of explosives)

Excessive

amounts of

Uncle Dale’s Dynamite

Compost can burn/kill plants.

Open and measure compost

on a hard cleanable surface

or bare soil that will be

worked. Excessive application

rates are not recommended!

For comparison, Uncle Dale’s

Compost has similar nutrients

to poultry manure.

Please see nutrient levels as

reported by A & L Laboratories.

IngredientsCarbon sources in this compost include grain dust,

soybean straw, hay, wood by products, and composted

leaves. To this mixture of high organic matter sources

are added, wet feathers, blood, lungs, fecal material

swept from floor, condemned birds, and any evisera not

picked up from facility.

RecipeA typical day’s compost batch at Schefter Poultry is

made up of the following:

• 3 yds of grain dust

• 1.5 yds of composted leaves

• 300lbs soybean straw

• ¾ yds of active compost

• 1 ½ yds of wet feathers

• 40 gallons of blood

• 30 gallons of lungs

• 20-40 condemned birds

This mixture is put into a TMR mixer, thorough mixing is accomplished

after 20 minutes. The batch is then windrowed in a covered licensed

compost facility on a concrete floor. Windrows have reached a core temp of over 55

deg Celsius or 131 deg Fahrenheit by day 3. Windrows are rolled together and mixed a

minimum of 5 times during the initial heating phase. Large piles are made and turned,

keeping surface area smaller, continues to keep largest volume of material “hot.”

The large piles being turned ensure a consistent finished product as well. In

January composted leaves are added 50/50 to further increase the organic

matter of the finished product.

30 - Howick 160th

Even though the small committee of volunteers began meeting early in the year to discuss the possible celebrations of 160 years - it was decided quite early that it can’t be done alone.

Volunteer shifts have been created by Miranda deBoer. Trying to keep them short shifts so that many can continue to join in the activities of the weekend. Like they say, many hands make light work. we are needing people to help with setting up Thursday of the tents, fencing, placing garbage cans, pylons and hanging signs. As you can just imagine, there will be tables that will be moved around, chairs to be brought in - the list goes on and on.

If you plan on being around for the weekend anyway - Talk to Coreen Harding at Bare Necessities, or call 519-335-4499 or Alyssa Robertson 519-291-7080 or email [email protected] to fill a spot.

Howick Hawks Minor ball would like to congratulate the 160th committee for their hard work and several hours into preparing for this event. It’s volunteers and formed committee’s like the 160th that make Howick Township a great place to live and raise your children. Howick Minor Ball was formed this year with the idea to keep all kids in the area playing team sports and representing Howick at all ages in fastball. Our goal is to have local kids learn and develop their fastball skills while in a team environment. Our executive committee consists of 8 local individuals who have all played, or still play baseball in the community. with this being our first year came lots of expenses. The generous support from local

organizations and businesses helped make Howick Minor Ball start the year in some nice new uniforms and equipment. News about the newly formed Howick Minor Ball spread quickly with registration numbers

higher than we anticipated. we were hoping to have any where from 3 to 5 teams this year but ended up with 7 in total which is a great start. Howick Minor Ball has been out in the community

already fundraising. Thank you to everyone that came and seen us at watson’s Home Hardware for our BBQ and Bake Sale. This was a great success.

Interested in coming to watch a game or two? Visit either wroxeter or Fordwich Ball diamonds almost any night of the week. we appreciate the support that all 3 parks boards have provided us. Our home games are played between Fordwich and wroxeter and practices are held at the Gorrie diamond. Stay up to date on what’s happening with Howick Minor Ball on Facebook or Twitter @howickhawks.

We look forward to continuing to grow as an organization and to increase our registration numbers to be able to provide fastball teams from T-ball right up to Junior in the Howick community.

The Howick Township Fire Department has been serving Howick Township since 1984. From humble beginnings with about thirteen firefighters and an old fuel truck retrofitted into a fire truck that was stored in a local barn. Today we have twenty-three firefighters, three fire trucks and a fire station located in Gorrie. The core values have remained the same: “a dedicated group of people who take pride in serving and helping their community through emergency response, public education and community service.” The Howick Firefighters have always enjoyed and will continue to take part in supporting community events. The firefighters look forward to and are always humbled by the support given to us at the spring and fall breakfasts. The firefighters would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the community for their past, present and continued support of the Howick Fire Department.

Currently throughout the volunteer fire services there is shortage of volunteers and the average service time of a volunteer firefighter today is less than five years. The Howick Fire Department can say that about half of the firefighters have almost ten years of service and we have four with over twenty years of service.

History of the Fire Department

The Howick Firefighters are happy to be part of the 160th celebrations and would like to wish Howick a Happy 160th. Please have a safe and fun weekend July 29-31. The How-ick Firefighters look forward to continuing to proudly serve Howick Township as “Neigh-bours Helping Neighbours”

Proud to be serving Howick Townshipfor 49 Years

• Prior to Howick having a fire department, Howick was provided fire protection through agreements with wingham, Listowel, Harriston & Clifford.

• 1984/85 -The fire department was formed under a joint fire board between Howick Township & the Town of wingham forming the wingham & Area Fire Department.

• In 1987 the fire department took over the former Howick Roads/Public works building in Gorrie. The firefighters did all the renovations required to the building themselves and it reopened as the Howick Fire Station in 1988.

• October 2009 the fire board was dissolved and the Howick Township Fire Department was created.

• The Howick Fire Department logo and crest were designed by a Howick Firefighter

• January 2010 Howick Township named Bill Doig as Fire Chief of the Howick Fire Department.

• May 12 2010 the “Creamery Fire” on Fordwich Line

• June 2012 Bill Doig retired with 28 years of service and Howick Township named Shawn Edwards Fire Chief of the Howick Fire Department.

• Over 40 people have served on the Fire Dept. and they currently has 3 women firefighters and a chaplain.

• Sparky joined the team in 2015 thanks to the generosity of the Howick Optimist club.

Submitted by Carol MannJuly 1, 1993 started out like any other Canada Day celebration. In the evening our family headed to the community centre for the annual fireworks display. As Ron was one of the Howick Firefighters, he was going to help light the fireworks. He stopped at the firehall and picked up his turnout gear and went on to the centre. Ron proceeded to the area where the fireworks were loaded and a crowd gathered a safe distance away to watch the show. Our daughter, Janice, noticed that he hadn’t taken his turnout gear and she promptly delivered it to him. He said later that he put it on mainly so children venturing too close would pay attention when he asked them to go to a safe area. As darkness set in, the fireworks began and all went well until there was an explosion on the ground accompanied by a loud “boom” that didn’t sound normal. A profile could be seen flying through the air and to use the words of a close family member – “I knew it was him”! An ambulance was dispatched and Ron was quickly transported to wingham hospital. It was a scary time for us as we didn’t know how badly he was injured.

It all turned out well as there were only minor injuries and shrapnel (pieces of casing and wood) embedded in his gear. He was badly shook up and remained in hospital overnight. It was later, when the firemen examined his helmet, that they found a hole right through the fibreglass! Needless to say, the events that led to him wearing his turnout gear probably saved his life. The helmet was retired and is in his possession. Our family looks forward to the return of a fireworks celebration, but plan to watch it from a distance!
