13 CUSTOMIZED TRAINING SERvICES OFFERS CONTINUING EDUCATION ONSITE, OFF SITE, & ON CAMPUS
We are in the midst of a productive summer session! As we prepare for the fall semester, I am pleased to share with you a few of the many accomplishments at Hennepin Technical College (HTC) during the 2010 -2011 academic year. One of the major accomplishments is featured in this edition of H Magazine. The college was honored to have been named a Tree Campus USA. The Tree Campus USA program recognizes college and university campuses that effectively manage trees and engage students in campus and community forestry efforts. HTC students and community representatives came together to celebrate the award by planting over 65 trees on campus. Trees were provided by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Another accomplishment was the creation of Math and Writing Centers on both campuses. The Centers provide an inviting, comfortable place for students to get help with assignments or to build on existing skills. The Math and Writing Centers compliment the services offered in the Learning Resource Center. These services along with many other individualized services are helping students gain the confidence and skills to be successful in their technical programs.
On page 9 you can find information about some of the new programs and options that are available. The Community Paramedic program featured in the magazine on pages 10 and 11 will provide students interested in allied health careers an additional option while also providing access to health care where there is a critical shortage of health care professionals. Another new allied health career option is Pharmacy Technology. We are pleased to be able to offer expanded opportunities for our students while responding to the employment needs of the health care industry.
On April 1 of this year, the college launched its new website. Our goal was to provide an appealing, easy-to-navigate site for students and prospective students. The feedback on the site has been extremely positive. We continue to add new information and make improvements keeping the site dynamic. I encourage you to visit the site www.HennepinTech.edu.
If you are considering attending college, I encourage you to consider Hennepin Technical College. HTC students range from those starting a new career to those who have been in the same career for many years and are attending to gain new skills. The Student Start Guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to learn more about the college and how to become a student. If you are not sure what career you want to pursue, our admissions staff can help you with your decision. If you are not familiar with the college, start by taking a tour with one of our admissions staff. Contact numbers are listed on page 8.
If you are a graduate or have attended the college, we want to stay in touch. Please keep your contact information current, by going to the Alumni page of the website and completing the Alumni Update Form.
I am fortunate to be the president of Simply the Best technical college in Minnesota! I welcome you to become a part of the Hennepin Technical College family.
Best regards,

HTC’s Tree Campus USA
By encouraging its students to plant trees and participate in service that will help the environment, Hennepin Technical College is making a positive impact on its community that will last for decades,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation.
For its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship, Hennepin Technical College has earned Tree Campus USA recognition for 2010 from the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation. This is the first year that HTC has been named a Tree Campus USA.
HTC is the first college or university in Minnesota to earn Tree Campus USA status.

Hennepin Technical CollegeAnnounces New
Hennepin Technical College (HTC) has announced that it is the first institution to offer community paramedic training in response to Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton’s signing into law the Community Paramedics Bill which creates certification for emergency medical technicians-community paramedics (EMT-CP). The course began in May at HTC’s Eden Prairie campus.
Community paramedics will help provide health services where access to physicians, clinics or hospitals is difficult or does not exist, particularly in rural Minnesota, where there is a large population of elderly citizens and a critical shortage of healthcare professionals.
In areas without easy access to physicians and clinics, the community paramedics can make a real difference in improving citizens’ quality of life and health,” said Kai Hjermstad, program coordinator for HTC’s Customized Training Services.
He noted that in addition to serving the need for acute medical care, community paramedics work with public health agencies to identify needs in underserved communities and develop methods to better serve them. Studies have shown that utilizing community paramedics can result in economic savings as they help citizens and communities overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing health services.
Another benefit of the expanded role of community paramedics is their preparation to monitor and provide some treatment to patients with chronic diseases and perform minor medical procedures in the patient’s home. For example, when responding to emergencies involving patients with autism, treating minor injuries in the patient’s home eliminates the added stress of transporting them to an unfamiliar emergency room.

Lehman’s Garage, in cooperation with Hennepin Technical College (HTC), orchestrated a vehicle rebuild and donation for the Minneapolis Police Department’s Bait vehicle Program. The program discourages vehicle theft by placing “bait” vehicles throughout the city that are specially equipped with GPS, hidden video cameras, microphones, and the ability for the police to be alerted and take control of the vehicle once taken.
The keys for the new bait car were handed over to Officer Wayne Johnson at a presentation at the 5th Precinct House in Minneapolis on Wednesday, June 8. Speaking at the event were Minneapolis Council Member John Quincy, Carole Carlson from Hennepin Technical College, Officer Wayne Johnson from the CID/Motor vehicle Theft Program, Lt. Tony Diaz from the 5th Precinct, and Whitey Westlund from Lehman’s Garage. Minneapolis Council Member John Quincy thanked the entities that made this donation possible.
The car will be used as a bait vehicle through the city’s Auto Theft Prevention Program. The make and model of the vehicle is kept secret so as not to alert potential thieves on what to look for. The idea is to deter auto theft by making potential thieves believe a bait car could be anywhere – on any street or corner. And the word is out there. According to Officer Johnson, in the past 10 years auto theft has gone down 66% in Minneapolis thanks in part to the Bait vehicle Program. “Most of the people we get in them are people that can’t keep their hands to themselves. And that’s who we’re looking for.”
Other businesses contributing to this project include AAA Auto Salvage, Inver Grove Toyota, Lowell’s Performance Coatings, DuPont, Parts Plus/Uni-Select, and A&L Striping.
As Carole Carlson said, “It really takes a community to build a bait car!”
This is the second vehicle that Lehman’s Garage and Hennepin Technical College have partnered together on to repair; giving HTC students hands-on experience and benefiting the community.
City of Minneapolis Receives Bait Car Donation vehicle rebuilt by Lehman’s Garage and Hennepin Technical College
The donation of this car is greatly appreciated. Not only does it typify the commitment to the values and missions of the city, but is a great example of how businesses, institutions like HTC who focus energy on education and career development, and local government can really work together to accomplish great things.”
