THE CRAFTY STEWARD (LK 16:1-31 BY FRANCES HOGAN) FATHER ANDREW WOJTAN HOMILY SUMMARY SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

Jesus addressed this parable to His disciples about a steward who wasted his master's property. Palestine, as a whole, and Galilee in particular, had many large estates owned by absentee landlords, who entrusted their property to stewards who had full authority to run the estate. It was a situation open to embezzlement of funds and all kinds of underhand dealings. The charges here were taken seriously by both master and servant, a fact that indicates they were correct. The master acted quickly in dismissing the steward, but demanded an account of the state of the property before he left. Up to date accounts were needed by his successor, and the steward's actions are consistent with this.

Reduced to poverty overnight, the man wants to ensure that help will be available from grateful clients and customers, so he alters the accounts in their favor. Once he leaves this job, he will be unemployed, and he could not face the shame of begging. Many scholars suggest that the reason why the steward could cut down the bill of the first customer by fifty percent is that he had been dishonest in getting around the Jewish prohibition on usury, and charging excessive interest. The customers would be utterly grateful, and the steward would, accidentally, have done his master a good turn by giving him a public reputation for generosity! That was certainly an astute move, which even his master appreciated!

Jesus did not want His followers who were so heavenly-minded that they were no earthly use! The "children of light", a term he used to describe those who joined the Kingdom of God, needed practical wisdom to run the affairs of the Church, but not dishonesty! The Lord had put them in charge of the Master's House, and they were to run it His way.

Jesus says that all money is tainted, because so much dishonesty is associated with financial matters, and especially the acquiring of vast wealth. The only way that money could win you the type of friends that would welcome you into the tents of eternity is almsgiving - Luke's favorite use of money. By a strange twist, the steward in this parable found that money was only useful to him when he gave it away!

Jesus goes on to ask for responsible stewardship in money. By comparison with eternal riches and heavenly graces it is indeed a small thing, but one that affects us all, and deeply, in everyday decision making. Jesus wonders if we cannot be trusted to deal honestly and wisely with money, what would we do with His Church? His people? His mission? the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit? the spiritual life, or even life itself? In all these things we are responsible stewards involved in authority and administration, decisions and consequences. Astuteness and wisdom are urgently needed here.

"No servant can be the slave of two masters… You cannot be the slave both of God and of money". This is the conclu-sion of the parable, and makes the whole point clear to us. The Aramaic word for money is "mammon", which usually stands for money gained dishonestly, yet the literal meaning is "that in which one puts one's trust". So, Jesus is telling us about our tendency to trust money and what it can buy, so it can take the place of God in our lives very quickly. Love of money is the quickest way to kill the spiritual life, for it insulates a person from God and blocks the first Beatitude "Blessed are those who know their need of God".
