Classic locomotives in the power range up to 1000 kW vary completely in their number of vehicle axles and vehicle lengths as well as in their reaching of maximum speed. The 3-axle H3 locomotive platform is based on a long frame which is with more than 12 meters unusually long and complies with the requirements of the crash norm EN 15227. The 1000 kW version is there-fore the most compact locomotive in its class and meets the requirements of the Euro IIIB emission standards. The shunting locomotive is with its innovative technology a vehicle which is easy to use. The standing area which operates at a low noise level, is ergono-mically optimized and allows a clear buffer view from the driver‘s cabin.

All locomotives reach the maximum speed of 100 km/h with a minimally navigable curve radius of 60 meters and have mostly, with exception from the different modules for energy production and storage, identical equipment (e.g. air brakes with brake discs, Alstom power electronics and single axle engines, control technology and driver‘s cab).

With a minimal curve radius of 60 meters and a maximum speed of 100 km/h all locomotives are mainly designed for the shunting and short distance service. Based on an identical platform, depending on their individual operation-profile, the customers can choose between different modules for energy production/- storage: from a pure battery locomotive, a hybrid version with a generator and a battery,

a locomotive with two generators and start-stop technology, to a design witha 1000 kW generator. The platform has hydraulically identical vehicle frames with three coupled wheel sets which are driven by asynchronous motors.

All types of locomotives have identical braking equipment, power electronics and a loco control platform. The H3 loco-motive will be available with a full EBA (German Railway Authority) homologation in 2015. After the homologation in Germany, the H3 platform will also be available in other country specifications.

The innovative chassis technology is based on the Alstom Copenhagen S-tog concept which was developed in 1996. For more than 15 years now, the process technology of the hydraulic steering system has proven successful. More than 100 vehicles of this type are in daily use.

THE CHASSIS

The chassis of the H3 locomotive platform represents a technological breakthrough: three at the center of the vehicle sym-metrically arranged wheel sets with an unusually long axis distance of 3, 2 meters. This is possible by a specific hydraulic steering system of the wheel sets, allowing a precisely rotation of the front wheel sets and a transverse movement of the central axle. The ground-precise adjustment of the wheel sets reduces maintenance and ser-vice costs of the wheel sets and minimizes the railhead wear in shunting areas without wheel flange lubrication.

The H3 locomotive platform offers operators not only a portfolio for the technical and technological optimization but also economic benefits for the shunting and freight traffic.

There is a variety of designs for the use of H3 locomotives. On the basis of a planning process, Alstom will together with the help of the operators implement these factors in a concrete business model.

As the successor of the diesel shunting locomotives, developed in the previous century, Alstom serves the entire European standard gauge market with a future-orientated modular platform product.

The H3 platform combines the gained experiences with latest regulations and technical expertises on the basis of the hybrid research projects and the prototype which based on a German class 203.

The locomotives meet the current crash norm EN 15227, the TSI and the Euro emission standards stage IIIB, when using a diesel aggregate. The H3 provides an ergonomically designed driver’s cab and an optimized standing area.

Low operating costs are currently and in future of great importance. The locomo-tive platform offers maximum flexibility between the different application areas of the shunting and freight business. The wide range of different shunting operations is covered with the H3 platform by a uniform design instead of many different types of locomotives. The use of proven components and maximum standardization for all spare parts of the H3 locomotives offers ahigh availability, a minimization of storage and procurement costs.

Where required, Alstom offers an exten-sive range of services for financing and leasing which includes the assumption of the procurement up to the full responsibility of the maintenance process.

Apart from the savings which are due to the emission standards legislative (approx. 50 % NOx and 80 % particle reduction), the H3 stands with its hybrid technology and two engine concepts for an environ-mentally friendly overall concept. This is possible because of the performanceadapted energy production which leads to low losses over the entire range of use. Each type of locomotive saves depending on its application and in contrast to the modern diesel hydraulic locomotives, 30-50,000 l diesel per year, which means around 1,5–2 million liter diesel within the normal lifetime of 40 years, avoiding 4–5 million kg CO2. In addition, the needed energy for the battery and hybrid variant is partly rechargeable from renewable sources during the standing time. In the medium term, other energy generators /- storage could be installed on the locomotive platform. (Plug & Run).
