Quick installation guide

This quick installation guide provides basic instructions for installing an S12500 routing switch. For more detailed installation procedures, see H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series Installation Guide.

Preparing for installation

ESD prevention To prevent the electronic components from being damaged by the electrostatic discharge (ESD), always wear an ESD wrist strap when you touch the switch, cards, or ICs, and make sure the wrist strap is correctly grounded.

Figure 1 Attaching an ESD wrist strap (on an S12508)

Examining the installation site The H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series can only be used indoors. To make sure the switch operates correctly and to prolong its service lifetime, the installation site must meet the load-bearing, temperature, humidity, cleanness, EMI, grounding, power module, and space requirements. For more information, see H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series Installation Guide:

Installing the switch in a rack Check before installation

Before installation, make sure the bottom edge of the slide rails or rack shelf aligns with the middle of the narrower metal area between holes.

Figure 4 Installing the slide rails

(1) Middle of the narrower metal area between holes (2) 1 RU

Installing cage nuts

1. Align the mounting bracket with the left rack post, making sure the bottom edge and the slide rail are level. Mark the positions of the cage nuts on the rack post according to the installation holes

on the mounting bracket (each installation hole on the mounting bracket corresponds to one cage nut).

2. Insert one edge of a cage nut into the hole.

3. Compress the other edge of the cage nut to push the cage nut fully into the hole.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install cage nuts to all the marked positions on the right rack post.

Figure 5 Installing the cage nuts

Mounting the switch in the rack

1. Use several people to place the switch on the slide rails or rack shelf and slide the switch into the rack until the mounting brackets on the switch touch the front rack posts.

2. Fix the mounting brackets to the cage nuts on the rack posts with mounting screws.

Grounding the switch 1. Remove the two grounding screws from the switch chassis.

2. Use the grounding screws to attach one end of the grounding cable to the chassis.

3. Connect the other end of the grounding cable to the grounding strip of the rack in the same way.

Figure 7 Connecting the grounding cable

Installing the power modules AC and DC power modules are installed in the same way.

To install a power module:

1. Rotate the power frame panel up with both hands.

2. Pull the clip at the bottom left corner of the power module to the left to open the power module cover.

3. Insert the power module slowly into the slot until it is firmly seated in the slot.

4. Close the power module cover, press the clip, and push the power module cover to lock the power module in position.

Figure 8 Installing a power module (on an S12508)

5. Install other power modules by repeating steps 1 to 4, and close the power frame panel.

Figure 9 Closing the power frame panel (on an S12508)

Installing a fan tray Each of the S12508 and the S12518 has two fan trays. They are installed in the same way.

To install a fan tray:

1. Remove the blank panel from the slot to be used.

Figure 10 Removing the fan tray blank panel (from an S12508)

2. Lift the fan tray and push it into the slot until it is firmly seated in the slot.

3. Fasten the captive screws on the front panel of the fan tray.

Figure 11 Installing a fan tray (for the S12508)

Installing a card Slot requirements

Install MPUs, LPUs, and switching fabric modules into appropriate slots as shown in Figure 12.

NOTE:

On an S12508 or S12518 switch, install at least one MPU, one interface card, and seven switching fabricmodules.

Installing a card

This section describes how to install an MPU as an example.

To install an MPU:

1. Remove the protective cover before installing an MPU:

Put on an ESD wrist strap and then loosen the captive screws that fix the MPU to the protective cover with a Phillips screwdriver.

Pull the MPU out of the protective cover gently, as shown in Figure 13.

Page 12: H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series

Figure 13 Removing the protective cover

NOTE:

Protective cover appearance varies with models. You can remove a protective cover of any model by using the same way illustrated in this document.

2. Move the ejector levers on the front panel of the MPU outwards, hold up the MPU by one hand without touching any electronic components on the MPU, and hold the front panel by the other hand to push the MPU into the slot along the slide rails slowly.

3. Push the ejector levers inward to ensure close contact between the MPU and the backplane.

4. Position the screws into the holes and fasten them with a screwdriver to fix the MPU.

Connecting power cords Make sure the power switch is in the OFF position before you connect the power cords.

Make sure the number of power cords is the same as the number of power modules. This section describes power cord connection when all the power modules are installed on the switch.

Connecting an AC power cord

CAUTION:

Typically 10 A busbars are available in the equipment room but the AC power supply system requires a16 A power cord (AC), so you need to use a 16 A busbar, and make sure the AC power supply system canprovide enough power. For 16 A AC power cords used in different countries or regions, see H3C S12500Routing Switch Series Installation Guide.

To connect AC power cords:

1. Attach the power cable bracket to the power frame, attach the spring washers, flat washers, and fasten the screws.

Page 14: H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series

11

Figure 15 Installing the power cable bracket

2. Insert the AC power cord into the power receptacle.

3. Use a cable tie to secure the power cord to the tie-wrap tab on the power cable bracket.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to secure other AC power cords to the power cable bracket.

5. Connect the other end of the AC power cord to the power source.

Figure 16 Connecting the AC power cord

Connecting a DC power cord

WARNING!

A plastic protection cover is installed in front of the grounding strip to protect operators from being shocked. Remove the protection cover before connecting power cords and then install the protection coverin time.

To connect a DC power cord:

1. Connect one end of the blue DC power cord to the negative terminal (–) on the power strip, and fasten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

Page 15: H3C S12500 Routing Switch Series

12

2. Connect one end of the black DC power cord to the RTN(+) terminal on the power strip, and fasten the screw.

Figure 17 Connecting the DC power cord to the grounding strip

3. Connect the other end of the DC power cord to the power source:

Connect the other end of the blue DC power cord to the –48 VDC power source.

Connect the other end of the black DC power cord to the RTN(+) terminal that provides power to the switch.

4. Put the protection cover on the wiring terminals.
