H440 replacement Power Switch board & Resistor Board

The H440 Has a well known issue with the Resistor board. They end up failing over time and this is due

to incorrect sized resistors used. They basically over heat and burn up. This will result in your NZXT

LOGO being very dim or not working at all.

The Original H440 Power switch panel board has no known design errors however to change the colour

of the power switch L.E.D is impossible due to it being a custom made park for NZXT. You simply cannot

buy a L.E.D in that size and shape.

So the only alternative is to design a replacement board. This board not only enables you to easily

change the colour of your power button and HDD Activity Colour but the L.E.Ds are spaced out lighting

up the power button ring much better.

    Replacement Power Switch Board

    Original Power Switch Board

You will first need to De solder the original H440 Power Switch Cable. Firstly unscrew the original H440

Power Switch board from the H440 case. Underneath is a cable with a white connector. Mark this with a

marker pen so you know the correct orientation when re installing it into the Replacement board.

To remove the cable connector from the original board simply add solder to all the cable pins at the

top of the board and pull the cable from the bottom at the same time why heating all the pins up with

the soldering iron add some flux will help the process.

Add solder to these 8 pins

Alternatively a de soldering sucker can be used to remove all solder. This should easily remove the cable

from the board.Once cable is removed the pins will need to be cleaned of any excess left over solder. To

install the replacement board, insert the original cable connector into the replacement board paying

Screw into place using original screws.

The replacement Power Switch system board has four 2 pin connectors. Three on top and one at

    bottom.

There are three JST-XH connectors on the top of the Board.(And one on the bottom of the board) These

can be used to attach Led strips that will illuminate the top and from side panels air vents/USB Ports

This enables you to add L.E.D strips to your case and power them easily and cleanly

Bottom Connector. This is were you will put 12v in to power the top 3 connectors.

Connect the bottom connector to a spare molex cable from the power supply

To do this you will need to make a cable up as

This cable is not included but can be easily made by using a 2mm pitch JST-XH Cable

    Purchase

2mm Pitch Single End JST-XH cable

(These cables come with the JST-XH connector already attached to cables)

And Male Molex Plug with 4 Crimp pins PC Power Socket

    8/28

Or if you dont fancy soldering and crimping the pins you can buy a

4 Pin Molex Male to SATA Female Power cable.

Just cut off the Sata Plug

    9/28

Simply connect the RED Cable on the JST-XH cable to the yellow pin on the female molex. And the

BLACK to the black Cable (Any one of the 2 Black Cables) on the molex.

Once you have made this cable it should look something like this

    Picture

Now connect this to the botom of the Power switch board now screw down the board to the pc tower

now purchase led strips and solder a 2mm Pitch Single End JST-XH cable

to the end of the led strip making sure polarity is correct (RED WIRE TO + (positive) and BLACK WIRE to -

    (negative)

    Here is the finished results

Remove screws and cables. Cable connectors simply pulls out

It is a simple case of unscrewing the original and replacing it with the new board. Cables connectors are

keyed so will only go in one way.

Resistor board has a RED switch built in to turn on/off the NZXT Logo.

The switch on the back of the TOWER case turns on/off the I/O back Leds

If The LOGO Switch on the resistor board turns off the I/O Back leds and the back of the TOWER switch

turns off the NZXT LOGO then in order to correct this 2 cables need to be swapped around. (This is

another NZXT Design error/mistake on SOME of the H440 Towers)

This is the cable we need to remove and take a closer look at.

  • 7/24/2019 H440 Instructions

    12/28

Remove these 2 cables and swap them around. This will correct the issue

Marking these two cables with a marker pen will help you remember Which ones need swapping

  • 7/24/2019 H440 Instructions

    13/28

Lift these small plastic clips up slightly as you pull the cable at the same time.

Do this one at a time taking care not to bend the plastic clip up too much as to not damage it

Once you have removed both cables swap them round and insert them back into the connector (They

will only go back into the connector one way. Once you push them all the way in you should be able to

pull on the cable slightly and they will not come back out

This replacement Resistor board uses large 1/4W resistors that can withstand higher temperatures (-

55~+155C) than the original ones could. Really they are overkill however this guarantees they will never

    fail

Resistors do get HOT because they limit the current to the l.e.ds. This is normal and completely safe. The

PCB Board has been designed in such a way to act as a heatsink itself .

SO much infact to populate and make a resistor board when we solder the resistors to the board we

have to use a reflow oven becasue the board acts as a heatsink so efficintly that when we try to solder

the resistors to the board we cant because the solder does not melt because the board is absobing theheat from the soldering iron! fretty cool eh!

This board Should not get HOT.. It may feel slightly warm to the touch but never HOT. By HOT I mean

extremely hot that you cant keep your finger on the resistors for more than 2 seconds.

If yours is HOT meaning you cannot keep your fingers on it longer than 2 seconds this would indicate

the voltage to the board is 12v and it should be 5v.

( another caulse is if you have added extra l.e.d's to you NZXT LOGO,a common Mod done on the H440)

Verify the voltage with a multimeter before you continue.

If multimeter reads 5v then everything is OK and no need to continue.

Your L.E.D'S are working the resistors a bit more than average but will be fine

If it reads 12v disconnect the power molex and continue to step 2

    STEP 2

Again this is another NZXT Design error. it seems that some H440 TOWERS were incorrectly wired to the

12v on the molex when it should be on the 5v. To fix this remove the molex from the resistor board and

swap them around in the molex to the RED (5V)

I also have a PWM Fan splitter Available for the H440 That simply screws right into any SSD Mounting

location (H440 Harddrie cage) power and control 11 PWM fans from the CPU fan header on the

    motherboard

Connect this PWM Fan Splitter to your motherboards CPU fan header with included cable. connect all

case fans to the PWM Fan Splitter. All fans will run at the same speed and increase as CPU temperature

rises. As this is PWM you are also able to set your own fan speed profiles in bios and in windows

allowing good customization over all your fans and most importantly fan noise.

It will also fit any pc tower case wit SSD Mounting holes

    More info

This Fan Splitter screws into Any SSD or 2.5" HardDrive Mounting location. uses the same mounting

    holes.

These can be found on harddrive cages, back of motherboard tray and so on.

This PWM Fan splitter has a back Back-lighting Effect under the PWM Fan Splitter that will glow a nice

blue. Contact me about different colour so we can match any colour scheme you have in your pc case

I Design and build these to order. This is the only 11 way PCB style PWM fan splitter in existent. This is

the reason i tuck the time to design and build Them. These are built to a very high standard with good

quality components. OVERKILL for a Fan Splitter however i personally rather pay a little extra for Quality

    plus will last for years!

I have made a little video showing the PWM Fan Splitter in more detail and the installation process in my

    H440 Pc Case

video can be found on this link> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd5iifufgg8

    WHY PWM FANS ?

With Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology, the fan speed can be dynamically controlled by the

motherboard, so the fan's runs at a speed that suits the operating conditions - lowering power

consumption and fan noise when the system is idle, and delivering maximum cooling under full load

    conditions when needed

    ...........................................................................................................

    OPTIONAL FEATURE

The tacho speed sensing connections on the pwm fan splitter are the speed sensor connections for each

fan that is connected to the pwm fan splitter

    example >

number 2 header on the pwm fan splitter corresponds to the number 2 on the tacho connections block.

You can simply connect this to a case fan controller that has a screen to view the speed of this fan.

Just connect the yellow cable from the LCD fan controller to one of the pins on the tacho pinouts on the

pwm fan splitter. Your fan controller will now show the speed of the fan number 2

this step is not needed to operate the pwm fan splitter and can simply be skipped .its an option for more

    technical minded users.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS FEATURE AS IN PROPER USE COULD CAUSE DAMAGE

    .......................................................................

The pwm fan splitter gets its power from the molex connection and NOT from the motherboard. This

enables you to safely add extra fans to a PC and power other 12v devices. This pwm fan splitter is

perfect if you want to power more than one watercooling pump wear as you cannot connect more than

one watercooling pump to the motherboard as it would overload the motherboard and potentially

    damage the motherboard.

    Old style fans (3 pin)

can still be used with this device (however they will run at there max rated speed at 12v)

This is perfect for keeping cable management in servers or desktops that keeps nice and clean in a PC

case.also it is convenient to have a molex power

splitter in one place as this makes it much easier to add devices when needed.

This has been over designed with large copper power rails so it is safe to power

Hungry devices like high performance harddrives

  • 7/24/2019 H440 Instructions

    22/28

To use simply connect 2 molex cables from the PC power supply to the molex connections that are

    highlighted in

at this time there is no such item like this anywhere for sale.

Closest item for sale was a molex cable that had been joined up and this was a 2way only

And adds more unnecessary cable mess along with unreliable conection problems

Most devices use a female molex. To use them on this molex splitter you will need to convert them to

    female molex

Female molex plugs are extremely cheap and can be purchased in quantity of 10 in a range of colours

    and styles

please check the specs of your power supply so to not overload it

the bottom of this molex splitter has been covered with foam sheet (one side is sticky) this is to stop

anything from shorting out why its inside the pc case there is even mounting holes if you desire to screw

it in. i simply stuck my power splitter to the back of my atx power supply as this was most convinient for

    me.

    Installation

Decide were you want to place the key lock switch. Make sure there is plenty of room for the switch. Depending

were you decide to place the key lock switch you will either need a wood drill bit (to drill into plastics) or a

(metal drill bit) for steel. 12mm drill bit is used to drill the hole to mount the key lock switch.

Once you have drilled the mounting hole, get your key lock switch and remove the locking nut off the back of

the key lock switch. Now thread the cable of the key lock switch though the hole you just drilled and replace the

locking nut back onto the key lock switch and tighten up the nut by hand till the lock switch is firmly in

place. Now take the key lock switch (cable) and connect it to the junction box

On the bottom right hand side of your motherboard you will see your PC power on/off power switch connected

to your motherboard. Normally they are labelled (POWER SW) on the plug .Remove this cable and in its place

connect the fixed (non removable) cable from the junction box into the motherboard. Now connect your PC

power on/off power switch cable to the other side of the junction box

    Installation is now complete

To operate this product simply insert the key into the key lock switch and turn to the red position. Now push

your PC on/off power button. Your PC should NOT power up. Now turn the key lock switch to the green

position. Now push your PC on/off power button. Your PC should now power up.the key can be removed from

the lock in red or green position

    28/28

The junction block is magnetic ! This allows you to mount this anywhere in your case for cable management and

to stop vibrations and is easily removed

For added security on some PC cases you are able to lock your side panels with locking screws or padlocks. This

would be a good addon to consider if you want to improve security
