MARCH 2012 PAGE 1 In just a few weeks, we will gather together to celebrate what the rabbis taught is the last holy day in the year cycle that begins with Passover. Purim, the holiday of disguises, merriment, and debauchery is such an important holiday that the sources (Midrash Proverbs 9:2) teach that it will be the only holy day to be celebrated in the world to come. That seems to be a strange twist when the book read on Purim, Megillat Esther (Scroll of Esther) contains no reference to God by name. Singular among the books of the Bible, the Book of Esther masterfully delivers the combined explosive energies of laughter, randomness, sexuality and violence, but it never delivers God’s name. What then is so holy about this godless celebration of intoxication, frivolity and irreverence? On the one hand, the meaning of Purim is to be found precisely in the idea of concealment, and particularly of God’s deep concealment. Esther’s name means “hidden” and her identity remains secret in the story, until it serves the important purpose of her standing up to the violence of Haman. When we come to celebrate, we too hide our identities as we dress in costumes and mask our faces. On the other hand, the word megillah (scroll) is connected to the word megaleh, which means to reveal. Purim, then, is about searching below the surface – the invitation to pierce through randomness, vulgarity, and violence in order to uncover meaning and God’s Presence. If one of the “goals” of the holiday cycle that begins with the miraculous, divine liberation from Egypt is to help us identify the godly powers within, then Purim surely is the holiday to solidify that teaching. The story of Pesah is the story of how God takes us by the hand and redeems us from Egypt – Mitzrayim – from the narrow places where we get stuck and suffer. God then leads us through the wilderness while providing for all our needs, giving us guidance (Torah) and protection. When we, the Israelites, reach the Promised Land, the goal is that we will gradually learn to be independent, that we will internalize a moral compass and God-consciousness through the study and practice of Torah and that we can continue to be God’s partners in the ongoing creative endeavor that is life. The goal is that we will learn to reach redemption and God’s Presence on our own. continued page 2) Ha Kesher The Communication Newsletter of Congregation Dor H adash March 2012 - 7 Adar - 8 Nisan 5772 FROM THE RABBI Purim Lessons for Today, Seriously Congregational Meetings After six months of dedication and hard work, the Strategic Planning Committee presented to the Exec Committee and the Board this past week its recommendation for the future site of CDH. In just a few weeks, we will gather together to celebrate what the rabbis taught is the last holy day in the year cycle that begins with Passover. Purim, the holiday of disguises, merriment, and debauchery is such an important holiday that the sources (Midrash Proverbs 9:2) teach that it will be

the only holy day to be celebrated in the world to come. That seems to be a strange twist when the book read

on Purim, Megillat Esther (Scroll of Esther) contains no reference to God by name.

When we, the Israelites, reach the Promised Land, the goal is that we

will gradually learn to be independent, that we will internalize a moral compass and God-consciousness through the study and practice of Torah and that we can continue to be God’s partners in the ongoing creative endeavor that is life. “What is Reconstructionism anyway?”

Perhaps you’d like to delve more deeply into Judaism from a Reconstructionist perspective. Or maybe you’ve been looking for something that can demonstrate to others what you are so excited about–a place to send that cousin who has challenged you for years with, “What is Reconstructionism, anyway?”

Judaism Through a Reconstructionist Lens is a self-guided program available to anyone who wants to learn more about the movement. You can try a sample unit by visiting www.rrc.edu/distancelearning/reconlens/judaism-through-a-reconstructionist-lens-sample-unit. Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer, Ph.D., RRC ’82, the director of multifaith studies and initiatives at the College, guides participants through the online program.

A full year of access to the course costs $4.95, and registration is available online only.  Learn more by visiting http://www.rrc.edu/node/1225.

(Rabbi’s column continued)Purim is about humans taking full responsibility and

taking their lives into their own hands. Without Esther’s courage and commitment, there could be no light and joy with which the story includes. Without the hiddenness of God, humanity would not understand that we are critical to the transformation of the world from what it is into what it could be. Purim is about the miracle of human self-redemption. When we struggle to take ourselves out of the narrow places where we get stuck and suffer, when we learn to make light in the darkness, are when we meet God’s concealed Presence.

I can’t promise amidst our Purim revelry on March 7 you will encounter God’s presence (although that is a good idea for a costume). I can assure you though, if you spend some time appreciating what is concealed and what is revealed in our story, it might just lead you to higher ground.
