Letter from the Executive Director

What began as a small effort by a husband and wife back in 1976, a desire to provide affordable housing to those in need while seeking to eliminate poverty housing, Habitat for Humanity International has grown into a worldwide organization that has built more than 400,000 homes around the world and served more than 2 million people.

Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County, humble in its beginnings and desire to become part of this mission, and though a small affiliate by affiliate standards, HFHLPC continues to grow and thrive as an advocate and champion of those in need in our small Southwest Colorado community. But, more importantly, HFHLPC continues to witness how one small community gathers together in its generosity of spirit and determination to help its fellow residents. In its effort to engender self-reliance and stability, HFHLPC provides affordable housing and family services education classes to its partner families, programs that help to educate and uplift the members of our community - the members of our community who add to the wonderful diversity of its neighborhoods, a family equally as excited and challenged in raising a family, holding down one if not more jobs, but just as resolute in their desire to call La Plata County Home.

With much gratitude for your continued support,

Barbara BlundellExecutive Director

Mission

Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County provides responsible families in need the life changing

opportunity to purchase their own home. Through the cooperative efforts of volunteers, partner families,

donors, and staff, and through the education and homeownership programs offered to its partner

families, Habitat for Humanity reaches out from its Christian roots to build successful home ownership

experiences through the construction of decent, affordable homes and communities in which people can

live and grow.

About UsOur History:

Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County is an ecumenical Christian organization that is an independent

affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. In 1994, when a small group of citizens created a wave of

community support through a brief presentation about the incredible need for affordable housing in our

area, a hat was passed around among the audience and quickly filled with donations and Habitat for

Humanity of La Plata County was started - with its official affiliate status awarded in early 1995,

HFHLPC

Since that initial outpouring of community support, we have built a total of 34 houses, providing stable,

secure homes for 80 individuals, including 43 children and 41 adults. These families are now able to live

in a home knowing their zero percent mortgage is affordable and will never increase, providing them

with the opportunity to improve their overall financial situation and begin to break the cycle of poverty

that has kept them struggling for many years.

Our Program:

We build homes in partnership with volunteers and future homeowners.  Completed homes are sold to

these very low income families with a non-interest mortgage. Our Family Services and Education

Program provide the tools and resources to ensure successful homeownership and a rewarding life

experience.

Our program is more than just providing an opportunity to purchase a house, it is providing a new

way of living that spreads optimism and stability throughout our community and in turn takes our

area from hopelessness and despair to one filled with vibrancy and joy.

• Fundraising events continued with this year’s 11th Annual Liquor World Wine Tasting Gala &

Silent Auction raising just over $17,000 to benefit our programs. Smaller events continue to bring in

the festive supporters and excited newbies, all eager to support HFHLPC and its mission.

• The ReStore began a scrap metal salvage program in conjunction with Belt Salvage, opening up

another small fundraising opportunity as well as providing a valuable resource

• July continues to be earmarked as our “Building on Faith” month, with this year’s build month

benefiting from the support of eight local churches.

• HFHLPC hosted several interns this past year, including a marketing intern to assist with

marketing and community relations activities, sociology intern who assisted with church relations,

and a construction intern.

• Streamlining operations, e.g. receiving donations, pricing, etc. is believed to have been a strong

contributor to increased sales in the ReStore - a revenue stream vital to our operations that support

Financial StatementExpanding the Habitat ReStore operations, fundraising and development activities, and applying to past foundations who have awarded HFHLPC grant funds, as well as researching new grant opportunities, are the many ways in which HFHLPC endeavors to expand and grow its programs and capacity. As an advocate and provider of affordable housing and education programs in our community, the ability of HFHLPC to maintain steady growth in all facets of its operations and programs is requisite to its ability to service the the lowest area median income group in our county, 30-50% AMI.

In FY2010, HFHLPC will continue to expand upon the offerings of its educational programs and break ground on two new homes in Fox Farm Village, Bayfield, as well as expanding the ReStore operations - a critical source of revenue to fund our administrative operations.

Development and SupportContinuing to engage our community in creative and inspiring ways, it remains incumbent upon the Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County staff, board members, and volunteers who provide outreach services and spearhead community relations initiatives to inform and educate the public about the varied programs and services offered, including timely updates to the many foundations and donors who have supported HFHLPC in the past. Increasing our fundraising efforts remains vital to our operations.

As a non-profit organization serving a relatively small, rural community in our region, HFHLPC will continue to build upon the strength of its mission as a provider of affordable housing and family service programs, educating our partner families and community, as well as planning for the long-term is critical to the sustainability of the organization’s operations and the the very fabric of our community.
