One year of building together - Habitat For Humanity Tucson's Annual Report 2014-15

TRANSCRIPT

  • Annual Report 2014-15

    Together,we build.

  • At Habitat for Humanity Tucson, we listen to dreams. We hear the desires of families and communities, and we empower hardworking individuals to build the future they deserve.

    We do it together.

In 2014, we offered 16 families that opportunity. Thanks to our partners, donors and volunteers, 40 children now have a stable place to play and grow. Together, we provided 23 families across the globe access to potable water, sanitation and adequate housing.

We also repaired the homes of 81 veterans, seniors and individuals so they can have the ability to live in their homes safely for years to come.

While we are proud of this work, we must recognize ongoing needs in our neighborhoods and continue building a better world. Together.

Why? Because there are still families who live in fear and distress. Because there are still children who dont know the meaning of home.

You can be a part of the solution.

Together. As we head into our 35th year of building homes and hope in Southern Arizona, we are enormously grateful for the support and trust of our donors, volunteers and staff who continue to make it possible for us to build a better world together.

I am excited about our future of working together. So let us celebrate the successes of this year with the knowledge that our mission is ongoing, that together we can - and we are - making a difference.

Together, we will change the lives of many for years to come.

Thank you for building with us.

    In partnership,

    T. VanHook, CEO Habitat for Humanity Tucson

  • Strength. Stability.Self-reliance.Shamekia Arron is a sister, a guardian, a superhero - and now, shes a homeowner. When Shamekia gained custody of her brother and sister after the loss of their mother, she made a promise - she would own a house and she would give her brother and sister a safe and stable place to call home.

In March of 2015, she fulfilled that promise.

It was a garage, nothing more. It was built to accomodate a car and the occasional storage boxes full of seasonal decor and dusty tools. But for Candi Gomez and her daughter, Vanessa, that garage was where they had to live - but Candi was determined to find something much better.

On Mothers Day 2015, after nearly nine months of physically building a house, saving for a down payment and attending classes on financial management and home maintenance, Candi was presented the keys to her Habitat for Humanity Tucson house. She beamed, knowing that she had built this house, and could turn it into their home. Together, Candi and Vanessa had the foundation for a bright and successful future.

With those keys, Candi and Vanessa gained a neighborhood filled with friends, a roof that protects and a home that theyve since filled with love. They are continually thankful for the hands that helped to build their home - the hands that changed their lives.

For Candi Gomez, home means love, peace and a place where her family can live and thrive in unity and security.

    Welcome home, Candi and Vanessa.

  • Pat and Peter Hirschman have pledged support of Habitat Tucson in their will. We are honored to have them build a legacy that will impact lives for generations to come.

Additionally, Pat can be found volunteering at the construction site and in the Habitat Tucson offices weekly, and together the compassionate pair has partnered with 10 families, helping them prepare for the reality of homeownership.

Its empowering the difficulties that families faced prior to Habitat and they come to Habitat to overcome them, Peter said. Thats really exciting.

True to our vision of a more just and compassionate world, Habitat for Humanity Tucson builds partnerships and empowers both families and individuals through programming that goes beyond new construction.

    Partnership.

Neighbors helping neighbors - Habitat Tucson partners with businesses, school groups and faith communities to complete projects that enhance the quality of life for residents in Tucson, Amado, Sahuarita, Marana and Green Valley. We help seniors, veterans, families and individuals live in safety and security and in a neighborhood in which they can take pride.

    Empowerment.

Women Build challenges and empowers women from all walks of life and all skill levels to help build affordable homes, hope and opportunity for hardworking families in Southern Arizona. In Tucson, the Women Build team - our all-women construction crew and fundraising committee - has broken ground on 14 new homes since 1999. Women Build has a powerful impact on volunteers, and offers a community-building experience unlike any other.

    Building a legacy.

  • On Thanksgiving 2009, Marco Anthony Delong was severely injured by an IED while deployed in Iraq. His injury was progressive and eventually he lost all function in his left leg. Home repair projects he had started before deployment were left unfinished. His aging home became a financial burden and threatened not only his dignity, but his safety and livelihood.

    Enter Habitat Tucson.

Delong found hope through Habitats home repair programs and in 2014, his home received plumbing fixes and structural improvements that would allow him to live in peace and safety.

Delong now advocates for veterans and has spoken on behalf of Habitat Tucsons programs. He thanks the hard work of volunteers and the support of the community for helping his family live comfortably.
