Day 2010.

Greater Des Moines Habitat celebrated the cul-mination o its Habitat 20/10 project the afliate

built 10 homesin a previously abandoned feld in 20 days and dedicated them during the week oWorld Habitat Day.

During the Arkansas State Fair, Habitat Pulaski

Countybuilta house on site at the airgrounds,then moved it to a lot in North Little Rock.

The Habitat or Humanity City College ofNew York campuschapter held a housingconerence educating students and locals

about issues surrounding rent stabilization and

encouraging participation inaffordable housingcampaigns. Habitat New York Citys directoro advocacy joined the panel discussion, which

included representatives rom other area housing

and nonproft organizations.

At a large shopping mall in Kowloon Bay, Hong

Kong, Habitat China organized the two-day public awareness eventBuilding Homes,Building Hopes. Activities included the assembly

o model stilt houses representing Habitat Chinas

Tai O fshing village restoration project and painting

volunteer gloves and hard hats.

In Nazareth, Lesotho, Habitat hosted a family-friendly day of service at six completed Habitathouses, with more than 200 volunteers painting,

plastering and gardening.

Habitat Romanias Big Build 2010 brought 150volunteers rom Northern Ireland to the city o Beius

to help build 12 homes.

Habitat Bay-Waveland Area in HancockCounty, Miss., distributed copies o If I Had a

Hammer: Stories of Building Homes and Hopewith

Habitat for Humanityto church libraries andprepared nearly 1,400 church bulletin insertsbearing World Habitat Day inormation.

HabitatTrinidad and Tobago hosted the HungerBanquet,an evening event to heighten awarenesso ongoing activities in the alleviation o poverty

housing and homelessness in the two-island nation.

In addition to also marking its 25th anniversary,

Habitat Durham observed World Habitat Day with apetition whose signers included nearly 30 YouthUnited members encouraging Durham decision-

makers to take concrete action to ensure the

stability, the security and the dignity o a decent,

aordable home.

Building a house, building a business

AFER HER HUSBAND leher eight years

ago, Jumabubu coped as well as she could. She

raised three childrenonher own, including Izat

whohasepilepsyandintellectualdisabilities.

Jumabubus salaryromBishkekWater, a state

runcompanyintheKyrgyzcapital,didntgoar,and

itwasnotenoughtomakemuchneededrepairsto

theirtworoomhouse.Teroobeganleaking.By

thetimetheamilyappliedtopartnerwithHabitat

Kyrgyzstan,itwas concave.Whenitrained,water

pouredintoIzatsroom.Teoorwasruined,and

therewasmold.Now,Jumabubuandheramilyliveinawarm

anddryhome.Teywereamongtherstamilies

toparticipateinaprojectthataimstokeepdisabled

peopleout o institutions and with their amilies.

Started in2007and unded by the Open Society

Institute,theaddressingphysicalbarrierstosocial

inclusion project engages partners, including

Habitat, and is a chance to break the isolationo

peoplewithspecialneeds.

Whileapartnerorganizationprovidesinhome

care, therapy and job training or participating

amilies,Habitathelpstorenovatetheirhouses.Te

projectisscheduledtoengageatotalo65amilies

overthenetthreeyears.

Troughthistypeohomeimprovementwork

and other housing interventions that ocus on

womenheadedhouseholdslikeJumabubus,Habi

tatsworkisatthesametimeimprovingthestatusowomeninCentralAsia,wheretheyoen ace

education, health andrights obstacles.Its likeI

beganliewithablankleaandwithapositiveand

goodspirit,saysHabitatpartnerandsinglemom

ElmiraNiazalieva.

Ithasnotbeenaneasylie.Formanyyears,Tanh

TuyandhertwodaughterslivedontheUS$2aday

drypalmleaves,withadirtoorthatquicklyturnedtomudduringtherainyseason.Tereweretimes,

TanhTuy says,when she elt powerless against

nature.Whenitrainedheavily,weladledthewater

intoanemptybucketandpoureditoutside,butby

thetimewecamebackinside,thehousewasalready

ooded,sherecalls.Wormswouldcomeoutothe

mudoor,andsnakescouldenterunderthedoor.

Sometimes,theamilyhadtoaskaroundorood

because the sewing machine was completely wet

romtherain,despitebeingindoors.

Ten, Tanh Tuy was told about Habitat

Vietnam. Sheapplied or a threeyear loan that

allowedher to build proper sanitation acilities.

Managing topay back that loan one year early,

shecontinued to partnerwithHabitat, borrow

ingagaintoupgradeheroor.Tenewoorwas

constructedatjusttherighttime,astheopportu

nityaroseorhertoopenatailoringbusiness.She

hiredlocalsewingproessionals,whobroughtintheirownsewingmachinestoworkatherhouse,

andnowplanstoinvestinmoremachinesoher

own.Sometimeinthenetthreeyears,shewould

alsolike totakeoutanotherloanto improvethe

wallsoherhouse.

Ineverdreamedohavingabusinessomy

ownbeore.Myhousewasinsuchabadcondi

tion,shesays.Tisprojecthashelpedpoorami

thatwewouldtryanddisposeolater,sheeplains.Techildrenbecameill.Itwasaveryproblematicsituation.

Ihavetriedtoasksomanypeopleorhelp.Ihave

knockedonsomanydoors,shecontinues.Terewas

nosuccessinmyeforts.

ButthenGadiseemeta representativeoHabitat

Ethiopia,whichwaslaunchingapilotprogramtobuild

communalsanitationacilitiesintheslumsoAddis

Ababatotestsuchaprogramseasibilityandimpact.

Withthehelpothelocalgovernment,plotsoland

wereidentiedwheresanitationblockscouldbebuilt.

Duringtheimplementationperiodortheproject,290

individualsin51amilieswereserved.

Gadiseeinsiststhatshecouldntjustgiveupwhen

shedidntndhelpimmediately.Tistoiletblockhas

madeagreatchangeinourlives,shesays.Itsnotjust

myamilythathasbeneted,butthewholeareabenets.

Itisnowourproperty,andwedividethecommunity

intogroups.Wehavekeystotheacility,andweraisea

smallamountomoneyormaintenancetokeepitin

agoodcondition.

LandavailabilityandpriceskeepHabitatEthiopia

rom partneringwith amilies tobuildnew HabitathomesinAddisAbaba.Tewaterandsanitationproject

istherststeptowardimprovingtheshelterconditions

faCts Sioux Falls is named or wateralls on the Big Sioux River.

Greater Sioux Falls Habitat celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010 with a volunteer thank-you

dinner. Other noteworthy accomplishments include building the frst Habitat house in an adjacent

county and building to Energy Star standards (now in place or all the afliates houses).

Last year, Greater Sioux Falls Habitat expanded its reach in the community by launching A

Brush with Kindness. Thinking it would be wise to begin the new program cautiously, supporters

planned to repair fve houses. By the end o the construction season, they had completed 36.

The reugee population in Sioux Falls has increased signifcantly in recent years, prompting

Habitat volunteers to scramble or translators o dierent Arican languages. Oten, this task alls

to the younger members o partner amilies. I am struck by the bravery o those amilies and the

responsibility on the young shoulders, Olsen says.

An Apostles Build a house sponsorship strategy in which 12 area churches team up to sponsor

a Habitat house concluded in November. Through the build, Olsen says, new church partners

became involved in Habitats work, the church relations program was strengthened, and another

build is planned or this year.

Looking ahead to 2011, Habitat supporters raised money at an outdoor arts and crats estival with

a booth selling the South Dakota culinary specialty chislic. The unds they raised were matched

by a local Thrivent chapter and will be directed toward support o a build project later this year.
