“Alone we can do so little. Together we

can do so much.” –Hellen Keller

That quote can be applied to so many

aspects of life. One of the smallest

examples would be within ones family. In

my family we rely on each other to do so

many things: potty train, learn to tie shoes,

build a garden, and accept new

challenges. Our 2 year old son, Charlie, will soon be

venturing on the potty training path. Sophie, our 6 year old

daughter, just started Kindergarten and needs to learn how to

tie her shoes. Kevin, my husband, and I spent our Labor Day

building the frame for our raised garden. And I now rely on

the support of my husband and the love of my family to take

on the new and exciting role as the Director of Community

Education for the ROCORI School District.

I rely on my family for personal support, but I also rely on

my new colleagues for professional support….. and maybe a

little patience as I step into this new role! I could do it alone,

but I wouldn’t get very far. Together we can and will do so

much.

I have only been in this position for a few months but I can

already honestly say that I love coming to my job. That love

would not happen alone, rather it is created by the

interactions we have together and the community atmosphere

that was built before my time.

The ROCORI School District would not be “ROCORI

Proud” without all school members, no matter the building or

city, working together to create the cohesive family that

exists today. The ROCORI community would not be what it

is without investing in itself and supporting everyone and

everything within it.

To put it in a nutshell, I believe that Helen Keller’s quote is

what community education is all about; working together to

create a great environment full of opportunities for everyone.

Through supporting each other, learning from each other,

sharing experiences, and just plain having fun, I am really

excited to start working together with all of you!

ECFE – Early Childhood Family Education

ECFE is a public school program for all Minnesota

families with children between the ages of birth-

that the family provides a child’s first and most

enhance the ability of all caregivers to provide the

best possible environment for their child’s learning

and growth.

ROCORI ECFE is a fun, informal place to learn

with other parents/caregivers and meet new

friends. Children spend special time with their par-

It is hard to believe, but this school year marks the 50th year of operations for the ROCORI School

District! We have looked back into the records to verify the anniversary. The records indicate that 50

years ago, the ROCORI Schools functioned as a public school district for the very first time.

Much of the early history of the district was captured by the first superintendent of schools, William J.

Virant. He gathered a lot of information in a book called, ROCORI Area Schools: Early History.

The book was published in December, 1997.

We know from the history book put together by first Superintendent of Schools, Bill Virant, that

there were many, many steps taken in the organization of the dis-

trict. The process of bringing the ROCORI School District into be-

ing was very challenging and filled with roadblocks and diver-

sions. The description of the legislative lobbying, the efforts in

working with the state Department of Education, the conditions in

the 1960s, and the local issues involved in setting the district bounda-

ries are fascinating to review.

In Minnesota history, the ROCORI School District (along with a few

of our neighbors) is a relatively young school district. With only 50

years of history, we are one of the last public school districts to be

organized in the state. According to the writings of Superintendent

Virant, Pierz, Sartell, and St. Michael were the others formed at

about the same time.

Consolidations of school districts, of course, has occurred since that

time so school districts have certainly changed over the 50 years.

The formation of public school districts across much of the rest of

the state happened earlier than it did in this region.

As we go through the year, we are looking at a variety of ways to celebrate the anniversary. We had

some conversation about 50 years at a school board meeting in August and the board felt is was im-

portant to turn to

school groups, organi-

zations, alumni and

support groups to try to

put more formal cele-

bration activities into

motion. We are inter-

ested in hearing from

groups or individuals if

there is interest in or-

ganizing or initiating

some kind of anniver-

sary event, activity or

celebration. Please

contact Scott Staska at

the District Office with

any interest.

on a common theme for American Education Week and Veteran’s Day.

Monetary prizes were awarded to four students in each grade. Then the

the flag. Thank you to the Richmond Legion and Auxiliary for the priz-

students. Decorations, games and prizes were set up in the gym. A great

time was had for all who attended. In December they set up the Holiday

Shoppe. The Holiday Shoppe is a safe place for the students to buy holiday

gifts for their family members. The gifts are wrapped and ready to go under

the tree when the child brings it home.

The PTC paid for the students to go to a play at the Paramount in St. Cloud.

They saw ”Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” In the spring the PTC will

Family Groups

John Clark Elementary has their student population divided into Fami-

ly groups. The fifth graders are the leader of their family group. Each

month the fifth graders collects their family from each of the other

grades. Mrs. Burtzel has taught them a lesson on a character trait that

they in turn teach their family. In November the character trait was

‘gratefulness.’ On a heart each child wrote what they were grateful

for. Then they were displayed on the wall. The hearts were spilling

out of a cornucopia. In December the students will make a tree orna-

ment and decorate the trees as we sing carols.

The kindergarten and first grade students enjoyed a close

up look at the Rockville fire truck. The fifth grade class graduated

from DARE.

grades 6-8 and provides a diverse range of opportunities for

students to explore a variety of interests. Along with our usual

classes of Math, Science, His-tory, and English, ROCORI Mid-

environment to grow both socially and academically. If interested in attending

Activities do not always mean athletics as we have a host of clubs and
