Vastly improved and extremely robust, Hach’s sension Platinum Series Electrodes have provenexceptional in performance trials and are ready to make your life a lot easier.
Why do sension Platinum Series Electrodes perform betterthan ever? We’ve taken the best features of our celebrated(and still fully patented) reference technology and incorpo-rated them into a highly efficient and long-lasting electrode, distinguished by a superior, glass-to-platinum seal. Hach formulated glass membrane provides increased accuracy and quick response time for all water solutions.
In addition to the inherent benefits of our non-porous, free-flowing reference – designed for maximum consistency of flow…
• You’ll notice a crisp, more consistent feel to the dispenser.
• You’ll enjoy a significantly faster response to pH changes.
• You’ll further accelerate testing with a much faster temperature response.
Scrupulously reformulated glass.Complete with new leakproof, glass-to-platinum seal, the sensionPlatinum Series half-cell has been optimized for increased accuracyand an ultra-fast response – even in cold, near-neutral samples.
Low Ionic Strength (LIS) Sample Chamber. Reduce the potential for CO2 interference in pH measurementwith the LIS Sample Chamber from Hach. Ideal for grab-sampling,flow-through testing, and conductivity testing of samples character-ized by low ionic strength, the LIS Chamber isolates the samplefrom the atmosphere, preserving the integrity of your pH results.(See page 34 for more details.)
Quick temperature response.Design of thermistor and housing reduces temperature response time.
Better reference.Easier-to-purge reference assures continuous, unimpeded flow ofelectrolyte from the cartridge right down to the junction, whereit makes contact with the sample.
Reliable dispenser.Dispenser action is smooth and consistent, refreshing the reference junction for each measurement with precisely 6 µL of reference solution.
Long-lasting electrolyte.Easy-to-replace cartridges replenish gel supply without having to replace electrode.
Step-by-Step Procedures!Hach’s popular procedures – complete with simplified, illustrated instructions and helpful testingtips – are shipped with every sension electrode.

Repeatable Results, Time After Time.Hach’s Platinum Series Nitrate ISE was tested against a comparable probe in seven identical trials. Both NitrateISEs were dipped and removed from the same sample seventimes and results were recorded. As the chart above indicates, the Hach Nitrate ISE demonstrated less than half the noise. Why pay twice as much for a nitrate ISE when you can getaccurate, repeatable results, time after time, with Hach’s newPlatinum Series Nitrate ISE?
Assured Accuracy.Analysts who routinely measure sodium know how sluggishand unpredictable the reading can be. What if you couldprogram your meter to accept your sodium reading onlyafter it has stabilized? With the sension4 Laboratory pH/ISEMeter and a Platinum Series Sodium ISE, you can. Hach’sproprietary sodium glass bulb also reduces the chance ofpotassium error.
Go ahead and try them, risk-free!
1. Pair Hach’s improved electrodes with our sensational sension Meters.
2. Add your choice of buffers, cases, and other helpful accessories.
3. Use our illustrated manuals and free technical support.

For analysts not having the best of time making friends with elec-trochemistry, this article explores some of the inherent difficultiesposed by pH measurement and how they can be overcome withnew sension™ meters and probes from Hach.
Anyone familiar with pH measurement knows that electrochemistry(when everything is working properly) is the most accurate meansof determining pH. It can also be the most problematic due to avariety of error sources. Errors can range from residual reference-junction potentials and bad buffers to inaccurate temperaturemeasurement and imprecise calibration software. Other potentialsources for undetected error include high electrode impedance, induced voltages from RF interference, improperly designed signalstabilization criteria, sample contamination, stirring effect, and sodium error.
The problem of contamination and residual reference-junction potential The reference junction acts as an electrically conductive bridgebetween the reference electrolyte and the sample to be measured. This junction must be designed to allow free movement of electrons. It must also isolate the reference electrolyte from thesample, ideally allowing only a small amount of diffusion of the reference electrolyte into the sample and no flow of sample into the reference electrolyte.
Reference junctions made of porous materials can produce signifi-cant error by absorbing the sample and eventually clogging. Evenmore frustrating is the fact that the junction potential changesaccording to sample characteristics, contributing uncertainty to calibration procedures and sample readings. ‘Free-flowing’ sleeves ofannular-ring configuration (either an epoxy cone, or glass-on-glassseam) typically allow a higher rate of electrolyte diffusion into thesample than porous materials and tend to dump electrolyte in anuncontrolled manner when manually refreshed.
The new sension Platinum pH probe from Hach, featuring a 0.04-inch diameter capillary tube and a medium viscosity gel electrolyte, maintains excellent electrical conductivity while restricting the flowof electrolyte into the sample. The probe allows virtually no diffu-sion of sample into the reference cell and eliminates contaminationof the reference electrolyte itself. The sension junction is renew-able at the click of a button, dispensing a precise, 6 µL amount ofelectrolyte into the sample.
How inaccurate buffers can produce inaccurate resultsBuffers are not always the stable entities they are cracked up to be.Their pH value changes as a function of temperature. Basic bufferssoak up CO2 from the atmosphere and become more acidic overtime. Additionally, volume loss through evaporation also affects pH.
Buffers formulated to NIST standards are well characterized, whichmeans that the pH temperature profile has been well documented. There are other pH buffer standards out there, but their pH depend-ence on temperature is not nearly as well characterized as the NISTbuffers. Meter software inside Hach’s new sension series ‘knows’what a NIST standard buffer pH value is over a wide temperaturerange. That is why Hach designs meters to recognize NIST buffers, and why the solutions and premeasured buffer powders sold byHach, which can be easily and freshly prepared for each calibration, strictly follow NIST formulations.
A word of caution: Not all buffers follow NIST formularies. Abuffer listed as ‘NIST traceable’ merely means that its pH, at thetemperature tested (usually 25ºC), is the same as that of an NISTbuffer at the same temperature. It does not necessarily mean thatthe buffer has the same formulary or well-known pH values over a wide temperature range.
The challenge of time and temperature Let’s face it. You can’t wait all day for everything to come to thesame temperature. When your buffers are a different temperaturethan your sample, you expect your meter to adjust the calibrationslope accordingly. In addition to the non-linear relationship ofbuffer pH values with temperature (a four constant third-orderpolynomial describes the relationship very well), there exists a linearrelationship between electrode slope and temperature, from theNernst equation: sension meters from Hach make adjustments forboth the linear and non-linear temperature effects during calibration.During the sample measurement, the electrode slope is adjusted tothe temperature of the solution so that the proper slope is calculated, producing an accurate reading regardless of calibration standard orsample temperature.
What if the temperature sensor is slow to respond or in error? InHach’s new Platinum Series electrodes, the temperature sensor hasbeen designed to respond quickly to changes in temperature. Also, the reference element is in close proximity to the sample so that allthe elements of the probe – the reference element, the pH bulb, and sample – come into thermal equilibrium quickly.
The impact of electrical “noise” on high-impedance bulbs Glass is a material with high electrical resistance. pH bulbs haveresistances measured in megOhms. As the resistance of the glassincreases, electrical noise present in the environment becomes moreof a problem, as the electrode cable acts like a radio antenna and yourpH meter picks up these stray electrical fields in much the same wayas your FM radio picks up radio waves and static. Hach Companysubjects its electrochemical testing products to thorough compliancetesting, so the consumer can be confident that the published specifica-tions are met, even when using these high impedance pH electrodes.
29
The shielded coaxial cable used by Hach prevents interference frommost electrical fields. Even so, at certain frequencies (such as highgain signals of three volts per meter in specific regions in the MHzrange-far outside the bands reserved for cell phones, FM radio, andtelevision) the meter may pick up these electrical fields, causing ashift of 0.04 pH units at most. (Use of the ferrite bead on the Hachelectrode cable completely eliminates this extremely rare problem.)In other meters tested by Hach Company during compliancereview, such induced currents completely swamped out the normalfunctions of the meters.
The challenge of time and stabilizationMany analysts grow impatient during the time it takes for pH readings to stabilize. But what if you could toggle from pH to mVmode at the push of a key and monitor drift and noise yourself?Even better, what if you could set your meter to stabilize at theexact moment it achieves 0.0 pH resolution, which happens morequickly than 0.00 or 0.000 pH resolution?
New sension meters from Hach not only allow you to toggle tomV and observe the electrode output more directly, but also to setthe stabilization criteria to match the pH resolution you require. To achieve a higher resolution like 0.01 pH, the stabilization criteriacan be adjusted to that higher level of certainty. It takes more timeto stabilize, but when it does settle in, you can be certain of yourreading. For those who have time and require the utmost accuracy,a 0.001 resolution can be selected as well.
The problem of sample contamination and carry-over Even when analysts practice utmost care in washing, rinsing, dryingand storing samples, strict protocols are not always practicable.Samples can be compromised by carry-over from previous samples, even when laboratory glassware is dedicated to various standards andtypes of sample and containers are rinsed well with DI water andaliquots of sample before critical measurements are made.
When sample carry-over takes place within the junction of porous-junction electrodes, there is little that can be done about it. Thiscan bedevil a day’s work, especially if the instrument has alreadybeen calibrated and the water being tested has very low conductivityand thus little buffer capacity. In this case, carry-over in the junctioncan have a significant effect. Hach’s Platinum pH electrode, with itspatented reference junction, totally eliminates this problem. Withjust a few clicks of the electrolyte dispensing button and an eletroderinse, there is no risk of carry-over or a change in junction potentialsinterfering with careful work.
How stirring can speed response – and compromise qualityWhile stirring the sample may initially speed up response, it can bea source of trouble in pH measurement. For one thing, stirring canadversely affect any junction potential that may exist. In tests con-ducted by Hach Company, this effect was frequently noted inporous junctions and was often present in annular-ring sleeve typejunctions as well. The Hach-patented reference junction presentedthe smallest stirring noise and was an order of magnitude smallerthan other comparably priced electrodes.
In addition to the problem of potential shifts and noise, stirring may also cause any volatile components present to evaporate fromthe sample. An agitated surface also causes the sample to more readily take up CO2 from the atmosphere. All of these factors lead to false readings.
The sodium ion dilemmaThe presence of the sodium ion is the greatest source of error inbasic solutions typically above pH 12 or 13, though sometimesobservable as low as pH 10. Because the pH bulb does not easilydiscriminate between the sodium ion and the hydrogen ion at theseelevated pH values, the meter can indicate a reading which is lowerthan the actual pH in the presence of sodium ions (falsely moreacidic). It is important that electrode manufacturers accurately characterize this sodium – or alkaline – error in their pH glass sothat reliable readings can be calculated for users who routinelymeasure highly caustic solutions with a known sodium content.
The only reliable way this can be done is by comparing the bulbresponse with the response of a Standard Hydrogen Electrode.(Anyone who has used a Standard Hydrogen Electrode can easilyappreciate how wonderful it is that pH glass bulbs were invented to measure pH!) Hach Company has taken the time to carefullycharacterize the sodium error and working ranges of their electrodes, providing differing types of glass formularies to suit unique applica-tions – from fast response in cold, near neutral solutions with lowionic strength to caustic solutions where very low sodium error isguaranteed.
Hach’s published graphs and carefully worded pro-cedures help the analyst correct for sodium error. So, despite the many difficulties that can plague electrochemicalmeasurement – from inaccurate temperature measurement to samplecontamination – it pays to understand the underlying causes, employthe best possible laboratory technique, and select instrumentationand procedures like the new sension meters and electrodes fromHach that have been specially developed to minimize, if not eliminate, such problems.
