In the days of modern travel, one thing becomes clear – a capsule wardrobe that will work anywhere in the world is the ultimate in importance. Hackett has created a collection that draws together the essentials of classic menswear and distils them into travel friendly pieces.

The Great British Travel Collection is designed to withstand the rigours of all your international travel – garments made in stretch fabrics and hi-twist yarns give them crease resistance, helping them maintain their shape even when repeatedly packed and unpacked, and outerwear has been designed to pack down extra small to help save space. Along with our favourite linen shirt, suede deck shoes, and the perfect holdall – this means you can leave more room for your duty free, gifts for those back home, and the accessories no man should be without.

BEHIND THE SCENESthe Côte d’Azur

Creating a campaign is no easy task, but aided by being in the South of France in September when back home in Britain it was beginning to look a lot like Autumn, Hackett, Terry O’Neill and Pierce Brosnan set about creating something very special… Our location scouts found us the best places to shoot, drenched in sunshine, surrounded by water and all with the most amazing views…

4ALWAYS TAKE AN UMBRELLA:being British, we know how useful it can be. Rain or shine, an umbrella will always come in handy.

BERNERS TAVERNThe London Edition10 Berners StreetLondon W1 +44 (0)20-7908 7979The Berners Tavern is no more a tavern than I am a hat-stand, but it was comfortably the most extraordinary space to open up with a view to serving food and drink in 2013. I came upon it quite by chance, while oozing round Ian Shrager’s new London Edition hotel at a private party for London’s hottest portrait painter, Jonathan Yeo. I had been slugging perfectly fashioned elderflower gimlets with Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin for a little while when I grew suddenly bored of all the art talk, so slipped out across the hall and through the vast inner doors of what must be the biggest and most beautiful new dining room in England.

Oil paintings of dramatic chiaroscuro line the walls from floor to twenty foot ceiling. A vertiginous cocktail bar steeples skywards and fills the air with bottles. Ornate plaster cornicing gives a faint sense of Versailles. And then from a kitchen overseen by the great Jason Atherton, come some of the most elegant mouthfuls around: giant protein scratchings with a bacalao dip, lush Sicilian olives and a saucer of ceviche…

EAT TO THE (STYLE) BEATif you are in London this summer and plan on eating out, Giles Coren journalist, author

and TV presenter shares his most stylish London restaurants

CECCONI’S5A Burlington GardensLondon W1+44 (0)20 7434 1500The office canteen for Savile Row has without question the best upholstered diners of any restaurant, anywhere in the world. I don’t know whether these people are mostly tailors or mostly clients, but if it is possible to look elegant while inhaling a hundred quid bowl of alba truffle linguine and a glass of prosecco then it is in a suit so beautifully made you feel you should be paying for the privilege of looking at it.

The menu and the clothing have the effect of making Cecconi’s feel like a little slice of Italy in London. Outside at the pavement tables sit guests, smoking slim cigarettes and drinking Aperol spritzes. Inside, other diners drink super Tuscans with a bleeding tagliata and summon staff with the flick of an eyebrow.

On a certain sort of spring afternoon in St James’s you can sit here and feel that you are at the epicentre of all that is well-made, beautiful and timeless in the world. As long as you know the guy who stitched your button-holes by his Christian name.

MERCHANTS TAVERN36 Charlotte RoadLondon EC2+44 (0)20 7060 5335Everything is being called a “tavern” this year, but again this is no old pub spruced up a bit and given a smarter menu. This is a purpose built palace of modern British excellence on the main artery of thriving, steaming Shoreditch – which has unquestionably become London’s most stylish quarter since the turn of the Millennium, but where eating out has always been a bit-and-miss.

The guys who opened this place in November 2013 took their inspiration from New York’s Gramercy Tavern and put the super-talented Neil Borthwick in the kitchen while his partner, Angela Hartnett, the most important female British chef in history, takes an executive role. The style is urban and edgy but grown-up, comfortable and well-heeled. The bar at the front is stocked with some of the great craft beers of the day, including an unfiltered Hells lager from Jasper Cuppaidge’s supercool Camden Town Brewery, and the dining room is run by Thomas Blythe, former head man at the legendary St John in Clerkenwell, and without question the doyen of hipster head waiters.

The scene here late in the week, at the bar and restaurant tables and spilling out onto the cobbled street, is simply dynamite.

BEAT THE HEATHackett’s Top Ten tips to surviving the

summer in style

1Opt for chinos, blazer and a classic polo shirt for casual occasions that require a little more “finesse”

Find a statement accessory that works all season long – a lightweight scarf or straw hat can complete an outfit

Lighten up and beat the heat by investingin a blazer in either linen or seersucker fabrics

Never wear socks with your deck shoes or even your brogues, flash some ankle for a very European look

Add some pattern into your wardrobe with lightweight checks and stripes, which keep it professional, but add a modern summer twist

5

Page 15: Hackett ss14 finalwithcover

6Team tailored shorts with a classic blazer and a button down shirt, making it suitable for both work and play

White is a summer essential. Be brave and suit up. Add pops of colour with shoes and scarves

Tonal colours work together to create a formal, but summery look, try it with greys for a cool muted look

8

7

9That said, don’t be afraid of colour – add pops of it into your outfits, making sure you include blues and pinks

Flip flops are for the beach – everywhere else wear deck shoes, lightweight brogues or desert boots

SEAS THE DAYdiscover the thrill of the open water, our favourite yachts and the must attend boating

events of the season with Tim Thomas, Editor In Chief of Boat International magazine

Whether it’s sculling gracefully across the Thames at the Royal Regatta, or skulling a well-deserved Pimms after a day of racing on the Solent, there really is (as Kenneth Grahame famously wrote) nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.

Yachting itself has long been held as one of the archetypal gentlemen’s pursuits, but the modern incarnation offers so much more than a gentile, blazer-and-tie drift across

the oceans blue. From watching historic classics such as the BNY Mellon Boat Race – contested by the Oxford and Cambridge eights crews between since 1829 – and rowing’s equivalent of Wimbledon at the Henley Royal Regatta, to cruising the azure waters of the Mediterranean on a summer charter break with friends, the life aquatic offers an indefinable something. The breeze, the sea air, the lap of water on the hull – it’s the ultimate chance to escape life’s stresses and head out on your own adventure.

For those of a more competitive bent, the key sailing regatta in the summer season is Cowes Week, traditionally held at the start of August with hundreds of yachts and thousands of crew gathering on the Isle of Wight for eight days of competitive racing on the strategically challenging waters of the Solent. Whether taking part aboard a yacht, or watching from the Royal Yacht Squadron or aboard your own floating grandstand

(think Princess motor yacht, Champagne and friends), it is one of the highlights of the sailing and social calendars.

For those with a taste for travel, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, held at the end of September, offers a similar spectacle, with yachts ranging from classics and J Class giants to modern maxis and pocket cruiser-racers taking part against the stunning backdrop of the Gulf and town of St Tropez.

For the real glamour-hungry, the rarified world of superyacht racing – contested by yachts over 100 feet in length and costing anything up to £30 million each or more – has its own circuit in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. One of the best-known is the St Barths Bucket, held off the island of St Barths every March.

Whether big or small, racing or cruising, competing or enjoying the spectacle, there really is nothing quite like simply messing about in boats. Grahame had it right all along.

THE BOAT RACE

Oxford v Cambridge

The Boat Race, the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race or the Varsity Boat Race… whatever you like to call it, its position in the British Sporting and Social Calendar remains unique and it is a truly British institution. Whether you are a spectator from your living room, or from the banks of the river, make sure you look the part with the Hackett Boat Race collection.

We took to the open water to shoot part of the Hackett SS14 campaign, luckily it wasn’t a case of “man overboard” as we all enjoyed messing about on the water, played a few golf shots from the stern of our yacht and relaxed in the sunshine after a hard day’s work.

Windowpane Blazer

Single Breasted Blazer

Double breasted is back on trend, and it creates a smarter aesthetic, just right for when you need something a little more formal, but still want to fit in at the polo

Adding a pattern to the mix creates a fashion forward look to your blazer, and is just the ticket for enjoying the boats at the Henley Regatta

Every man should have a blue blazer in his wardrobe that can be teamed with anything to create an instant classic look, dress it up with formal trousers, or dress it down with jeans, and strike the perfect smart casual balance with chinos.

Of course, it’s worthwhile investing in more than one, as dressing for all the important events across the summer can play havoc with a gentleman’s wardrobe, but here are some key ways to wear your blazer to take you through each event in style.
