Dear Southern New England Chapter Members,

What warms your heart? Is it learning about someone being able to throw away her medical equipment because it just is no longer

needed? Maybe it’s the idea of slowing, or even stopping the progression of a disease for which there has been no treatment or cure, up to this time.

Bit by bit, MS patient Linda Jayaram Barish of Houston, Texas, found it harderto walk and function every day. She moved around her home by holding onto furniture. She never went any distance without her stand up electric scooter.

when Linda and her husband, David, visited Israel, a Hadassah friend inHouston arranged for them to see Professor Dmitrios Karussis, head ofHadassah Medical Organization's Multiple Sclerosis Center and a world authority on stem cell treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. Prof. Karussis ordered an MrI, assessed her condition, and then harvested Linda’sown bone marrow stem cells in a short, 20-minute procedure. He asked thecouple to return in two months, by which time the small number of cellswould grow in the lab to tens of millions. Immediately following the procedure,Linda and David knew they had to visit the Kotel. They were overwhelmed bythe possibility that the progression of Linda’s MS could be stopped or reversed.

Two months later, Prof. Karussis injected the stem cells directly into her spinalcord – a treatment developed at HMO. Eleven injections and several yearslater, Linda is walking without a cane and she has given away her scooter.

In 2012, doctors told 55 year-old Daniele rinaldo of Padova, Italy, that he hadALS – Lou Gehrig’s disease – and that he only had months to live. rinaldo, however, has beaten the odds – at least for the time being – thanks, he believes, to treatment pioneered by Prof. Dimitrios Karussis of the Departmentof neurology at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. rinaldo begantreatment in December 2012, just a few months after his diagnosis. He wasexperiencing severe cramps in his arms and legs, and the symptoms progressed rapidly to include respiratory and motor problems that made itdifficult to breathe, speak and use his limbs. under full anesthesia, stem cellswere harvested from his bone marrow. They were enhanced in the Hadassahlaboratory, and then, every three or four months, they were reinjected as infusions into the cerebrospinal fluid.

As of December 2015, he had received nine such infusions. “I’m still here,” rinaldo said in a telephone interview in December 2015. A former rugbyplayer, he will never be the avid skier and sportsman he was before his illness, he said, but “I walk, I work, I travel – I live.” Heartwarming? YES!

These things, and more, are what we Hadassah members do. Maybe we don’tsit at the research bench, or stand in the operating room, or teach in theclassroom, but we all play a part. Our stem cell research campaign of lessthan 20 years ago has borne fruit, and who knows where the research willlead, in terms of treating and curing disease. Hadassah cannot do what wedo without the support of our members and supporters, and we are so verygrateful for your generosity. won’t you consider joining me in making an additional gift to fund the incredible, lifesaving work of Hadassah? It willwarm your heart.
