Haddonfield Memorial HighSchool senior Taylor Sehdev isused to being in the backgroundas goalie during her soccergames. But in basketball, it is hertime to shine.

Sehdev shone brightly on Jan.28 as she reached her 1,000th ca-reer point during the Haddonfieldgame against Collingswood HighSchool.

“It was great. My team cameand jumped on me, my wholefamily was there, and the wholegymnasium was cheering,” Se-hdev said.

Sehdev has been playing bas-ketball for a long time. Beforeschool, she would play with herdad in the driveway and beganplaying in organized games infirst grade. She continued withthe sport, doing well and receiv-

ing support from her family.Sehdev never really imagined

going for 1,000 points until herfreshman year. She found out shewas scoring well during that yearand decided to set a goal of 250points per year.

To prepare, she not onlyworked with her team and train-ers to get better, but worked onher shooting by herself.

“I know shooting is mystrongest strength, so I keepworking on that,” Sehdev said.

She said one of the hardestparts of being a strong shooter isdefenders target her. However, one of her favorite things withbasketball is the sense of tight-ness of the girls basketball team.It works together to back Sehdevup and pass her the ball when she

is free and also to have her team-mates open when she can’t shoot.

Normally playing forward orshooting guard, Sehdev increasedher scoring each year. At the bas-ketball game before Jan. 28, shewas nine points away fromachieving her goal. She said sheset it up so she would get her1,000th point at a home game.

    For Sehdev, things didn’t go

down like she thought theywould, but it was just amazing. Inthe first Haddonfield possessionof the game, Sehdev scored athree-pointer. Then with the sec-ond possession came anotherthree, and another, and shereached her goal faster than shethought.

“It was an awesome feeling. Icouldn’t have done it a better

way,” Sehdev said. Her teammates hugged her in

celebration once she reached hergoal. Her family was there to cele-brate, too, bringing balloons forthe occasion. The whole audiencein the gymnasium cheered forher in excitement.

“It was a great feeling. They

The decision for the subdivi-sion of 605 Warwick Road stillhad no conclusion at the Feb. 2Haddonfield Planning Boardmeeting. However, a resolutionmay be close, as the board plansto hold a special meeting for thefinal decision on the subdivisionon a to-be-determined date beforeits regularly scheduled Marchmeeting.

Last December, applicant/de-veloper Mark DeFeo came back tothe Planning Board with a newapplication on the subdivision of 605 Warwick Road, addressing

concerns such as stormwatermanagement, lot depth, lot lines, parking areas and traffic. Thenew proposal for the subdivisionshas a 13,000 square foot lot frontedby Warwick Road, a 15,600 squarefoot lot fronted by Warwick andGill roads, and a 21,400 squarefoot lot fronted by Treaty ElmLane and Gill Road.

The Feb. 2 meeting began withcitizens’ comments, specifically apresentation by resident Jon Si-monson, who, though he agrees

the plan is far better than the pre-vious one, he still believes thePlanning Board should not ap-prove the proposal. He felt lotdepth, lot conformity, imperviouscoverage, storm water manage-ment, land disturbance, futuremaintenance, traffic and aesthet-ics were still major areas of con-cern. Simonson brought variousvideos and pictures of major

storms, and the traffic concernsat the corner of Warwick and Gillroads to reinforce his beliefs.

A major theme Simonsontouched upon was the variousgaps the borough has in its codesand ordinances on many of theitems. Simonson said if the War-wick subdivision was passed, hefeels the things the developer hasproposed should stay the sameand the maintenance of thestorm water management sys-tems should be enforced.

Attorneys Salvatore Siciliano, representing residents againstthe subdivision, and Donald C.Cofsky, representing DeFeo, gavetheir final remarks before thematter went to the PlanningBoard for a decision.

Siciliano’s reasons for disap-proval of the subdivision includ-

Give school district, BOEbenefit of the doubt

I would guess that for many, if not most,Haddonfield residents the school district’s

building referendum has been unfolding ina rather disconcerting way – the sudden-ness of it, its magnitude and the numerouschanges in prioritization, timing and im-pact on households.

Having said this, let’s keep some per-spective on the issue.

It’s been noted that we approved about$45 million in school capital projects be-tween 1986 and 2004. What that money wasspent on or if it was spent well, I don’tknow, but the point is there had been nocapital referendum in the past 12 years. It’swidely recognized that our nation’s infra-

structure is crumbling around us, so wouldit be surprising that our Haddonfieldschools, built largely pre-WWII and tackedonto as the Baby Boom rippled through, are the victims of the same “deferredmaintenance” mentality? If your budgets

are voted down, if they exceed an arbitrary2 percent cap, “bricks and mortar” will in-evitably be the poor stepchild to “pro-gram.”

And a little further perspective: based onthe current $35.5 million total referendum

and the correct calculation, the average an-nual cost per household of the referendumcomes to $300. That’s less than $1 per day,and less than what many pay for cable/cellphone bills each month.

Finally, I hope that the school district fol-lows the recommendation of several toform an expert citizen advisory group. Wemay be past the point where such a groupcan provide timely input before the refer-endum goes to vote, but I see the group pro-viding a permanent building monitoringfunction in support of the district andBOE. Like our commissioners, our BOE is

comprised of volunteer citizens who de-vote an incredible amount of time, energyand devotion to their duties and responsi-bilities – but who are typically not expertsin fields such as building maintenance andinfrastructure. And the cap-constrained

operating budget cannot support enoughpersonnel or consultants to stay on top of issues such as moisture intrusion beforethey become the next “surprise” referen-dum.

We have one of the finest “scholar-ath-

lete” school systems in the state and eventhe country. I’m fortunate to have been aproduct of this system, from Lizzy Haddonkindergarten through Haddonfield Memo-rial High School 12. If it takes an average of less than a dollar per day per household tokeep it safe and functional, then I say let’sdo it – give the district and BOE the benefitof the doubt that they have learned somevaluable lessons in this arduous process.

    Months of campaigning, of

    muck slinging, of pointing

    fingers, and of, sometimes,

yelling are finally producing some re-

sults. Last week, the Iowa caucuses –

the first stop in the race for each major

    political party’s nomination for presi-

dent – produced some interesting re-sults.

    Republican candidate Ted Cruz took

home the primary’s first victory for his

    party, besting the outspoken Donald

Trump by a margin of 28 percent to 24

percent. It was a successful night for

Cruz, and not a very good one for

    Trump.

But it was also a good night for

Marco Rubio, who surged to third

place with 23 percent. It puts him in a

great position to make a move in the

    coming weeks.

The battle in the Democratic party

was a little muddier. Even though

    Hillary Clinton claimed victory the

night of the caucuses, before all the

polling districts were in, she was neck

and neck with Bernie Sanders, each

within decimal points of each other.

    Rounded up, each candidate received

    50 percent of the vote.

    Our homegrown talent, Gov.

    Christie, while not completely done,

looks dead in the water. He ranked 10th

    among Republicans last week, with

only 2 percent of the Iowa vote.

The fight moved on to New Hamp-

shire this week, and it will continue

down to South Carolina on Feb. 20,then over to Nevada on Feb. 23. Eight

more states’ primaries will occur in

    March.

By this time next month, we could

have clear-cut winners, or we could

have a very unclear situation on our

hands. Either way, with the Iowa cau-

cuses in the books, and with the results

being so close for both parties, we’re

likely to see quite a bit of campaigning

    ahead.

    in our opinion

Iowa brings some surprisesTrump has challengers; Democrats are in for a fight; Christie is done

I replied to an ad in thePhiladelphia Magazine. After twoyears of responding to these ads, Ihad given up; nice guys, but…

Anyway, I continued to readthese often amusing ads. Then Iread this ad that read, “Executive, single, 48, slim, good appearanceand grooming with many activeinterests (backgammon, sports,

theatre, dining etc.) and a sense of humor wants to meet an attrac-tive, slim, interesting, compatiblewoman under 45. Phone andphoto appreciated.” It soundedlike a good winter date to me. I re-sponded, but no photo.

He called the following Sundayevening while I was watchingPBS’ Carre’s “Tinker, Tailor, Sol-dier, Spy.” With no recording de-

vice for the program, I asked himif he wouldn’t mind calling backabout an hour later. Carre I couldcount on; a phone call from astranger I couldn’t. He calledback. After a relatively brief con-versation, we made a date for thefollowing Sunday.

He took me to Pier 111, a barand restaurant in Atco. A bit of a

distance from Haddonfield, but Ithought he probably didn’t wantto be seen. We sat at the bar. Ifaced the television and he facedthe door. He ordered a scotch andsoda; I ordered a brandy alexan-der. The Phillies were playing animportant championship game.He never watched the game, but

just talked to me. Boy was I im-pressed!

When he took me home, we satin his car in my driveway chat-ting. I told him that I had to say“goodnight” because I was work-ing the next day. He walked me tomy door. I said “goodnight.” Heasked if he could kiss me good-night. I hesitated and then said,“OK.” He gave me a brief kiss andsaid, “More…” I said, “Good-night, Val!” and started to laugh. Then he started laughing, we al-most couldn’t stop.

Two days later, I was leavingfor work and noticed a card in mymailbox. The card was a Snoopy-type dog wearing a SherlockHolmes hat looking over a fence. The card read, “I’m so happy Ifound you. Is there a reward?” Hewrote, “I enjoyed meeting you theother night and am looking for-ward to seeing you again. I hopethe feeling is mutual. Val.”

I thought to myself, ah gee, heseemed so nice, but must be somekind of a nut. I then remembered

my former roommate who re-ceived a nosegay after her firstdate with her husband, an engi-neer. Is that what engineers do? Iaccepted his date for the nextSunday. We were married ninemonths later.

reasons: the incredible dollaramount proposed and the extentof work that suddenly needs to be

done. Why have the buildingsbeen so neglected? Not for lack of funding, I know from having hap-pily paid my part for many pastbonds.

I know we live in an affluentcommunity, but is the Board of Education thinking about the not-so-wealthy residents' ability topay for this whopper? And, not allseniors are eligible for the smallhelp provided by the "seniorfreeze." I've already seen friendsforced to move out of our blessedtown solely and sadly because of high taxes. And now we have theBancroft purchase and other in-creases to worry about, too.

At the projected 83 cents per

day I have read about, I figure thetax bill for my average home willincrease $25 a month! That's a lotof money for me to pay out of myfixed, sometimes declining, in-

come. And some of that would befor pleasantries that I most defi-nitely did without as a student, and to no ill effect. Those pleas-antries are totally unnecessaryfor students today, and isn't it ask-ing too much to expect me to anteup?

I believe I will be joining themajority of my friends who arecounting their pennies and plan-ning to vote this unreasonablebond down.

that definitely makes me happy,”Ellis said.

Ellis has always been activeand into sports. He played footballand lacrosse all four years atHMHS and continued with hislove of sports by studying exer-cise and sports science at the Uni-versity of Alabama.

However, in his first semesterof college, he focused on his stud-ies rather than getting involvedin sports or a club. It was the firsttime since he was 5 that he wasn’tinvolved in an extracurricular ac-tivity.

Looking for something to do,Ellis’ mother gave him a tip on aninformation session on being theuniversity’s mascot, Big Al. Atfirst, Ellis laughed at the thoughtof being a mascot, but decided togo anyway.

Ellis was surprised to find BigAl did a lot more than just athlet-ic appearances. He goes to hospi-

tals, charities, weddings, birthdayparties and more. He was im-pressed by all Big Al did and de-cided to try out.

After an interview, which in-cluded Ellis busting out a song byVanilla Ice, an improv session, asignature lesson, a walk lessonand a field test, Ellis was one of two people chosen to be Big Al.Five people rotate as the elephantmascot.

“I was lucky enough to be oneof the two who got picked. I was-

n’t sure I would get it, but I wasdefinitely happy that I did,” Ellissaid.

Ellis said as Big Al, you have tobe funny and flirty. Big Al, who

has a big round belly, is known forhis belly shakes and his butt wig-gles, getting everyone laughingand smiling.

“Kids all want to see the shak-ing belly and butt,” Ellis said.“Seeing everyone so happy andmaking people laugh, it is defi-nitely enjoyable.”

Since he was chosen as Big Alin April 2015, he has made appear-ances at many of the aforemen-tioned events. Outside of games,Big Al makes more than 500 ap-pearances a year that each personrotates.

According to Ellis, some of thehardest parts of being Big Al isdealing with the heat and not hav-ing fingers inside the costume. Hesaid you get used to it, but younever realize how lucky you areto have fingers.

As for his favorite parts, hefound it wasn’t the athletic ap-pearances he enjoys the most, butthe non-athletic ones. He saidmaking appearances at littletowns, children’s parties and can-cer centers are what ended upbeing his favorite and most re-

warding part of being Big Al.“It doesn’t matter what is

wrong, as soon as they see Big Altheir day is made, and nothingbeats that,” Ellis said.

One appearance that reallystuck out to Ellis was when hewent to the cancer center at thelocal hospital and saw someonehis age getting treatment for can-cer. He said it makes you realizenot only how grateful you are foryour health, but what a differenceyou can make as a mascot in

someone’s life. Ellis tries to go tothe cancer center at least once amonth.

“People don’t realize you gothrough that as a mascot. I didn’t

    either. Ithought it was

     just cheeringon the side-

lines, butbeing able to(make a differ-ence) meansso much tome,” Ellissaid.

Every dayas Big Al, Ellis makes sure to puta smile on someone’s face.

“I want to make sure everyoneis happy and having a good time. That is what (mascots) are therefor. I try to make sure anytime Iinteract with someone it is a spe-cial interaction,” Ellis said.

Ellis not only has his hands fullwith school and being Big Al, buthe also has a 10-month-old Ger-man shepherd puppy to take careof. Despite, not having a lot of freetime, Ellis is happy with all hedoes.

ed a nonconforming lot, not meet-ing the 50 percent reduction forstorm water for two-years, havinga 1.5-inch drain for the drainagesystem when a 2.5-inch minimumis required, and the belief thatthe development should be con-sidered a major development.

Cofsky’s reasons for support-ing the subdivision included hav-ing conforming lots according tothe law, the belief that the devel-opment is not considered a majordevelopment as there is 0.98 acresof land disturbance, a drainagesystem that though not conform-ing on some things will improvestormwater management in ar-chitect Clifton Quay’s profession-

    al opinion, and addressing all

    other concerns from the previousapplication.

The board asked borough engi-neer Todd Day if he felt Quay’sdrainage system was better withwhat he proposed, though notcompletely conforming to recom-mended standards, and Dayagreed it was.

Board Chairman John LaPro-cido reminded board memberstheir ruling must be done by theLand Use Law and not by person-al feelings.

Though there was some con-cern with how close many of theproposed projects for the subdivi-sions were for conforming to thelaw, by laws and codes, the subdi-vision was within the limits of the laws, according to PlanningBoard Vice Chair Doug McCollis-ter. Board members agreed thereneeded to be better outlines of

    codes and laws.

Those on the board who spokewere split with the decision. Com-missioner John Moscatelli askedif it was possible to set require-ments for the developer to keepthe plans as they are now, and if they decide to change them, thedeveloper must come back to theboard. Board SolicitorDonald Ryan said that isallowed and very appropriate todo so.

While the board once againtabled the issue due to time con-straints, members want to make afinal decision before March’s reg-ularly scheduled Planning Boardmeeting. Therefore, members de-cided the board will hold a specialmeeting before March specifical-ly for the 605 Warwick Road sub-division plan. That meeting datehad not been set as of Friday, Feb.5.
