    6f the fi*e fundamentals of Islam, Zakat o%%u#ies the se%ond #ositioin, the first bein$ #rayer +salat. 'his word is deri*edfrom Zakd, whi%h means it +a #lant $rew. 'he se%ond deri*ati*e of this word %arries the sense of #urifi%atin, e. $. 2ad

aflaha man zakkaha +he is indeed su%%essful who #urified himself. 'he other word used for zakat both in the 2ur!an andthe adith is sada&a whi%h is deri*ed from sid& +the truth. 0oth these words are hi$hly meanin$ful. 'he s#endin$ of

wealth for the sake of llah #urifies the heart of man of the lo*e of material wealth. 'he man who s#ends it offers that as ahumble $ift before the Lord and thus affirms the truth that nothin$ is dearer to him in life than the lo*e of llah and that

he is full #re#ared to sa%rifi%e e*erythin$ for is sake. Se%ondly, zakat is the most effe%ti*e measure to im#ro*e thee%onomi% %ondition of the ha*e-nots. It is not, howe*er, a mere ta(, but a form of worshi# whereby a man %omes %lose to

his Lord. 'he Muslims ha*e, therefore, been en5oined to #ay zakat with the same sense of earnestness and de*otion in

whi%h the seeker of the Lord obser*es the #rayer. 'he #rimary moti*e of zakat is reli$ious and s#iritual, while the so%ialand e%onomi% as#e%ts are subser*ient to it. Its so%ial si$nifi%an%e is that it awakens in man the sense of brotherhood withless fortunate members of so%iety, and stirs his moral %ons%ien%e to make sa%rifi%e for their sake. From the e%onomi% #oint

of *iew it dis%oura$es hoardin$ and %on%entration of wealth and hel#s its steady and %onstant flow from the ri%h to the#oor. It is in fa%t a $ood means of #ro*idin$ #ur%hasin$ #ower to the #oor, for amelioratin$ their hard lot and enablin$

them to stand on their own le$s.

It should also be remembered that zakat or sada&a in Islam is not a *oluntary a%t of %harity whi%h a ri%h man $i*es to the#oor out of his own sweet will, but it is an obli$atory a%t whi%h e*ery Muslim is en5oined u#on to #erform if he is sin%ere in
