This month represents something of atriumph for our home-grown and home-produced newsletter. It is now thirty yearssince the Hadley Wood News first startedunder the supervision of Helen and GailRobertson and Pat Taylor amongst manyothers. In this edition Pat remembers theearly days of the publication and includessome articles of interest from the interveningyears. Over these thirty years the magazinehas been produced sometimesmonthly andsometimes quarterly. Should we change toquarterly now? This topic has been airedrecently at the meetings of the Hadley WoodAssociation. With falling advertisementrevenue there is a case for fewerpublications. By collecting together threemonths of news the magazine would belarger and more interesting. As ever yourviews would be welcomed.Rod Armstrong. Editor

Thirty years of the‘News’.The fore-runner of theHadley Wood News was athree/four paged typedreport detailing news of allthe local activities andclubs, delivered to thehouses by the H.W. RoadRepresentatives.By 1982 the team

producing this very labourintensive publication gaveup and there were novolunteers to take over –

thus the Hadley Wood News was born.New residents Gail and Helen Robertson

were involved with typesetting and printing, they were approached and fortunatelyagreed to take on the editorship andproduction. Helen did the typesetting, Gaildid the advertising and artwork, JennyBrookman did the diary (circulating all theclubs and other organizations) and an everchanging group gleaned and contributed toeach issue. The printing was to be financedby the advertising revenue, and againdistributed by the Road representatives. The ‘News’ came out every three months

and a month prior to its printing Gail wouldinvite ‘the group’ to discuss what washappening and motivate contributions.Gail and Helen left Hadley Wood in 1985

and in the absence of any other volunteers,I took over as editor (having been tutored byGail in the meantime) and a new team wasformed.Jenny continued with the Diary, Christine

Eggle took over the advertising and finance(Dieter kindly donated the paper), MavisWebber, Frainy Ardeshir, Moira Leatherdaleand many others assisted and contributed.Mavis Webber took over the diary from

Jenny in 1988 and continuedto do this until 2002. I retiredas editor in 1990 and sistersGillian Kemble and CherylPack were the joint editors forthe next seven years. SarahWynn and Liz Winter thentook over.In 2003 David Sitwell,

another Hadley Woodresident, began producingthe new colourful monthlyHadley Wood News that we

The 30th anniversary ofthe Hadley Wood News

know today. By now the H.W.A. RoadRepresentative system no longer existedand the new publication was delivered toMonken Hadley Hadley Highstone andHadley Wood by Letterbox a deliverycompany in New Barnet. When David Sitwell moved away in 2006,

Rod Armstrong took over the editorship andcontinues to keep us all well informed.Pat Taylor

culminating with us having to say ‘Good-bye’to our existing Pre-school children. It isalways sad to see them go, but satisfying toknow that they were happy, confidentindividuals ready to take on the challengesof ‘Big School’.Our major project for this year is the

extension to our existing playground. Wehave been working towards this over the lasttwo years and it has now become anecessity in light of the increasing demands
