Hairdressing Student Wins Award at Adult Learners’ Week Award Ceremony

Hairdressing student, Teresa Philpotts has won the West Midlands Regional Award at the Midlands Regional Adult Learners’ Week Award Ceremony. Teresa Philpotts left school at the age of thirteen with no qualifications, led an unsettled life for many years, had five children and worked in unskilled jobs to make ends meet. In 2007 she told her hairdresser that she wanted to be a hairdresser herself but lacked the confidence to apply to join a course. Her hairdresser happened to be a lecturer at South Worcestershire College and encouraged her to apply. Teresa began studying in 2008 and gained NVQ Levels 1 and 2 in Hairdressing (completing five more modules than the assessment required), as well as Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace, an Ear Piercing qualification and Level 1 in Literacy and Numeracy. She is currently completing Level 3 in Hairdressing as well as Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy. “The future is looking bright and I can’t wait to improve the lives of others by making them feel better about themselves too using all my new skills” said Teresa.

Following completion of her Hairdressing qualifications, Teresa plans to study Beauty Therapy. Gold Success for the Second Time at UK Skills

Level 3 Beauty Therapy student, Sarah Hothouse, is celebrating success again after being awarded Gold in the Advanced Level heats at the recent 2011 UK Skills Regional Heats. During the finals Sarah had to compete with ten other finalists from across the UK. “During the regional heats we had to demonstrate our Anatomy and Physiology knowledge, perform a Faradic treatment to prove our knowledge of the muscles, a back massage and a microdermabrasion” said Sarah. Last year Sarah was the proud winner of the Gold Medal for the Intermediate Level at the 2010 National Finals. “I really wanted to go for it again this year and so tried my best. I found that putting myself in a bubble and focussing on the treatments that I was giving helped to keep me calm and allowed me to concentrate.” Course Manager Sarah Martin said “The competition was extremely tough - Sarah did exceptionally well, which is an outstanding accolade for South Worcestershire College”.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Prior to booking your course, please take note of the following: At South Worcestershire College courses will only run if there are sufficient numbers. In cases where numbers are not sufficient, learners may be offered a course at an alternative venue, or contacted to ascertain whether they are prepared to pay a slight increase in course fees. Unfortunately it is with regret that it may sometimes be necessary to cancel the course. Occasionally due to unforeseen circumstances, course costs, changes in Government funding, other details such as qualification title, course content, days and times are subject to change by the College. Entry Requirements: Most recreational courses which do not lead to a qualification do not have any entry requirements unless specified in the course information in this brochure. All college courses which lead to a qualification are given a level, 1 being an introduction, 2 being intermediate and 3 being an advanced qualification. This helps you to know what entry requirements are required. As a guide: To do a Level 1 course Learners are required to have a good standard of general education. No formal entry requirements are required. To do a Level 2 course Learners are expected to have at least 4 GCSE at Grade D or above preferably including English or a Level 1 or equivalent. To do a Level 3 course Learners are expected to have 4 GCSE at A-C preferably including English or a Level 2 or equivalent. However if an adult does not have the relevant entry requirements, entry to a course can be granted subject to a satisfactory interview. All learners on a substantial part time course (6 hours or more) will undergo an initial assessment to ascertain entry level and establish if support mechanisms are required. Please note that sometimes even if a learner has the entry requirements for a Level 3 course, they may start a Level 2 course. This happens in many practical subjects as they need to develop practical skills to a certain level to be able to attempt a Level 3 course. Exams If you do not attend an exam, you may subject to payment of a resit fee. College Salons Learners are expected to abide by the rules and guidelines when in the college hair and beauty training salons. * It is important that students enrolling on the courses in this booklet with an asterisk are fully aware of The Code of Conduct/Salon Guidelines. Please request a copy at time of enrolment.
