A big thank you to the Facility Team at TDSB who have been working hard to repaint our school! We have been waiting for our school to be repainted and I am thankful that it was our turn this year!

Phonemic Awareness - Knowing the Sounds

Knowing and working with letter sounds (phonemes) is one of the foundational skills required in order to read and write.

Memorizing the alphabet is often one of the first things young children learn. As important, if not more so, is knowing the sounds each letter makes. It is foundational to ‘sounding out’ unknown words or ‘sound out’ to be able to spell and write.

As we begin to read with our earliest learners, those in pre-school, we should focus our conversation, our read alouds in helping the young child hear and differentiate between the sounds the symbols we use to represent that sound (letters).

There are three phonemes or sounds within the word cat.

/k/, /aaa/, and /t/.

Hearing the sounds each letter makes by “stretching out the word” will help students hear and differentiate sounds and by practice, will know which symbols make those sounds.

Shopping has 5 phonemes or five sounds /sh/, /ooo/, /p/, /iii/ and /ng/

The English language has 44 phonemes made by 26 letters. Understanding and hearing the sounds / symbol relationship helps the reading and writing process.

The EarlyON Child and Family Centre is a program for parents and caregivers with children from infants to 6 years of age. This FREE program is located in Room # 9. Daily activities include family story and music time, art, sand and water play, gym time and a nutritious snack. Please visit the centre whenever you can and participate in an enjoyable play based program.
