2 2014 Educational Conference

Pat Speth is the creative master-

mind behind the five inch square

craze and a talented scrap quilter. Pat has written four books and

many patterns for quilts using 5”

squares. She enjoys discovering

traditional blocks, designing new

blocks, and teaching the methods

for working with these squares. After juggling her full-time job and her

quilting for many years, Pat moved into a full-time quilting

career in July 2003. “I have found my passion in life, and I

can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Pat Speth

I have always made things, and love the

process of creating. In college I majored in

art history and minored in ceramics, but returned to fiber because it was more satis-

fying. For years my focus was designing and

making clothing. All that changed in 1992,

when I realized all I wanted to do was make

quilts. I have been designing and making

original art quilts ever since.

It is hard to say what part of quiltmaking I like best. I love the

pure creativity involved in conceiving and designing a new quilt.

I love to piece and to fuse. I have found that by fusing smaller pieces, I can work out design issues. Then I like to make

a bigger, bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large

format. Most of my work is machine quilted and nature in-

spired.

Every day I walk in a little woods near my home with my dog

George. Much of what I see there appears in my work. I discov-

ered hand dyeing fabric 20 years ago, and I now work almost

exclusively with my own hand dyed cottons and silks. I love the

dye process, and I particularly enjoy seeing the colors emerge

from the wet fabric.

SA-2 “Duluth Trees” All day Saturday

Raw-edge fusing makes quilting fun and fast. This woodland design is

simple yet elegant and naturally

suited for quiet reflection of the

passing seasons. Students will free

form cut tree shapes and, using a collage method, fuse them onto fabric

dyed in a colorway that speaks of

cabins, lakes and rivers. Each

student will create their own unique forest in the woods art quilt.

Lecture and Trunk Show “Fabulous Nickel Borders” 7:30 pm Friday

Turn a nice quilt into a WOW quilt by adding

easy-to-piece Nickel Borders. In this lecture we

focus on easy to piece borders that are made from 5” squares. I bring many of my quilts with

pieced borders and I walk you through my method of “auditioning”

borders.

SA-1 “Half Square Triangles and

Four Patch”

All day Saturday

These units could be considered the corner-

stones of quilting. Simple sewing and cutting

techniques will turn your 5" squares into many

great quilts. You can choose from 14 different quilts to make. Once you play with these units

on a design wall you may come up with a new

block of your own! You will also learn how to

make 2 different sizes of nine patches from 5" squares and sew a

mystery block! A handout will be given and discussed on how to

make your pieced border fit your quilt top. Rated: All skill levels.

SU-7 “Borders the Nickel Quilt Way” All day Sunday

Jazz up your quilts by adding easy pieced bor-ders. Unit construction methods will be taught

for these basic border units: Half Square Trian-

gles, Four Patches, Flying Geese, Picket Fence,

Hourglass Units, Small Wonders, and Combina-

tion Units. If time allows additional units will also be demonstrated. Learn how to fit any

pieced border to your quilt top. I utilize an inner spacer border and

we will practice calculating the size of this border. We will also go

through the steps and calculations needed to determine the num-

ber of border units needed when you are designing a quilt of your

own or adding a pieced border to a quilt that does not already have one. Worksheets will be provided.
