Essie was born in Somerset County on June 8, 1891. She
attended school through the primary grades. Essie was
a good dancer and won many contests! Essie’s parents
were William and Julia Stewart, from Saint Mary’s Coun-
ty. William was a fisherman. He drowned during one of
his fishing trips.
Essie was part of a large family of 12 children. The Stew-
art family was believed to have Native American ances-
tors. The Stewarts were also connected to a plantation
that they pronounced as “Sothorn or Southern”. Today,
the Sotterley plantation is identified as the same. Essie
named one of her sons after this plantation (Southern)!
Aaron was born in Saint Mary’s County on March 1, 1886.
Some of Aaron’s ancestors were Ivanhoe Indians. As a
youth, Aaron fished and later shucked oysters. His par-
ents, Henrietta Gross and Alexander Hall
raised 10 children. Alexander was also a fish-
erman. Papa (Aaron) went to grade school
before quitting to help his family.
Aaron & Essie met in the early 1900’s. They
were married on November 24, 1908 at the
Ebenezer Church, by Reverend Elias Q. Plum-
mer. On the day of their wedding, Aaron was
22 and Essie was 18.
In the early 1900s, many of the Stewarts and Halls
moved to the cities of Baltimore or Washington DC
to take advantage of better economic conditions.
Surprisingly, many of the Stewarts changed the
spelling of their name to Steward. In 1912, Essie
and Papa boarded a ship and sailed to Baltimore!
With them came Aaron’s father-William . They
moved to a rental house on Whatcoat Street
(William’s wife-Henrietta died of natural causes
around 1910).
Aaron’s brother-Henry also moved in with Aaron’s fami-
ly. Henry married Essie’s older sister, Cecilia! It appears
that Henry died sometime before
1937. Then Cecilia died June 1937.
Cecilia’s death certificate indicates
that her next of kin was her mother
(not Henry).
Aaron’s father, William died in the
1940s. He was struck by a car. This
accident happened on the corner of
Sotterley Plantation 1700-1800
7
Laurens and Calhoun Streets. William had just returned from his daugh-
ter’s house (Pearl). Essie’s mother finally re-married after 1937. As Julia
Stewart Hawkins, she lived out her days on Whatcoat Street with her
husband.
Essie and Aaron lived many years at 1330 Stricker Street. It was full of
memories like the woodstoves, oil lamps, the old outdoor toilet, coal
heat, and cobble stone walkways. Sometimes they were hungry.
Even today, many stories are still told about those “Halls”! Papa bought
a car that he never drove because he did not have a driver’s license. Aa-
ron was a very quiet man. He affectionately referred to Inez as he
“baby”. But Papa could swing into action if he needed to discipline an
ADULT son like Southern.
Some of the Hall babies died very
young. Their first child, “Baby” died
in St. Mary’s County even before
coming to Baltimore. The 2nd child
was Harold Reese. Very little is known about Harold’s death. It was
thought Harold was ill. Their 4th child, Henrietta, was lost during an epi-
demic that killed many babies in Baltimore. Henrietta was about 9 years
old when she died.
Milton was Essie’s youngest son. When he was born, she declared what a
“pretty boy” he was and the name stuck. Milton was killed in a car acci-
dent as a single young man (no children) . Lucille’s first child, Harold also
died as an infant.
Papa held quite a few jobs in Baltimore. When he worked at a fertilizer company, he also sold Essie’s home-
made pies to his co-workers. Until his retirement in 1929, Aaron worked with the B&O Railroad Co., Relief De-
partment, in Mount Clare. Essie did get a few jobs to help even though Aaron never wanted his wife to work.
Essie and Aaron joined Payne Memorial Church when it worshipped at Calhoun and Laurens Streets with Rev.
Murray. Aaron served on the usher board while Essie joined the Church’s aid. Essie sewed and enjoyed TRUE
LOVE stories. Papa like gardening and a good game of pool. Aaron played the organ and drew pictures of sail-
boats.
Essie departed this life on Saturday, August 15, 1953 at 3:15 AM at her home on 1330 Stricker Street.
The house was torn down about 1957 to make room for a school play ground. Aaron moved to a housing devel-
opment “the projects” on Saratoga Street with Lucille and her two youngest daughters (Sandra and Beverly).
Aaron departed this life on Friday, May 1, 1959 at the Provident Hospital. Essie and Aaron are both buried in
the Mount Zion Cemetery. To this date, a tombstone has not been placed on their graves.

Tru Hall’s roots go back to many places and many diverse cultures. But let’s examine just ONE
ancestor. Her name was Elizabeth Gill. Elizabeth was Tru's ancestor. According to the census,
she lived in southern Maryland with her daughter & son-in-law. She most likely lived or
worked on the Sotterley Plantation.
The background picture you see here, is a picture of that plantation as it existed when Eliza-
beth was growing up!
Today, Sotterley Plantation is the only tidewater plantation in Maryland open to the public. It
is a testament to all who lived, labored, resisted, and died there. Designated a National Histor-
ical Landmark in 2000, Tru can claim this ancestral home as the place where his ROOTS start-
ed! Sotterley plantation is older than Mount Vernon with a history that spans 3 centuries.
The following is Tru's family ties going back 10 generation and more than 200 years.
Way to go, Tru!

George helped to draft the first Maryland Constitution and became the sixth governor of the State of Maryland only serving the last three months of his life. At its height, Sotterley grew to almost 7000 acres.
By the 1790’s, Sotterley had an enslaved population of at least 93 persons. Sotterley passed to George Plater IV. With his death in 1802, it fell under the oversight and management of his brother, John Rousby Plater, as guardian to young George Plater V. During the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, Sotterley lost much of its labor force as a result of those who were enslaved running to and fighting alongside the British. 27 year old Elizabeth (and her spouse) might have been among those who escaped slavery to fight in the War of 1812.
With this lost of labor combined with economic depression and generations of accumulated debt, George Plater V sold Sotterley in 1822 to William Clarke Somerville.
If Elizabeth was at the Sotterley Planta-tion, she witnessed a WAR!!! (Loyalist to Patriot—Two wars with the British 1776-1822). She saw George Plater III when he did decide to join the Patriot cause shortly before the Declaration of Independence was signed and was a member of the 2nd Continental Con-gress from 1778-1780.

Aaron Hall (Baltimore) and Sarah Hall Short (DC) were
siblings. They all came up from St. Mary’s County about
the same time.
Over the years, many cousins from Baltimore to DC have
kept “in touch”. Junior (Aaron) was one of their favorite
visitors! Current contact includes Juanita Askew, her
mother-Baby Sis (Bernice) and uncle Paul.
The DC Halls have contributed to the online family tree and
always extend invitations to major celebrations. The
Baltimore Halls are invited to the June family picnic this
year!

LUCILLE MARGARET HALL was the third child of Aaron Alexander and Essie Rose Hall. She was the first child to live to adulthood, born on January 13, 1911 in Charles Coun-ty, Maryland. Lucille lived longer than any of her siblings.
Lucille stayed with her parents on 1330 Stricker Street until it was torn down by the city to make room for the neighbor-hood school grounds. Growing up as the oldest living child, Lucille developed a love for taking photos, cooking/baking, and growing indoor plants. Lucille liked to socialize. She was a roaring ‘20s FLAPPER!
At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her person-al Savior and was baptized at Payne Me-morial AME Church with the late, Rev. Murray, where she lifted her voice in song to the Lord on the gospel choir. Lucille could not sing!! But no one in the choir would even THINK of not having her there.
Lucille worked as a domestic for several area homes some-time working 6-7 days each week and during all major holidays to support her chil-dren.
During WWII, Lucille was a neighborhood air raid war-den. It was her job to make sure that every home was dark and that all the curtains were drawn in her assigned area.
After the house on Stricker Street was destroyed, the City moved Lucille, with her father-Aaron and daughters San-dra and Bever-ly to the City Housing Pro-jects on Sara-toga Street.
Lucille was a registered REPUBLICAN voter and preferred to be called “COLORED”.
Lucille moved to 633 Aisquith Street (Monument East) building when she was in her 80’s. She was still volunteer-ing EVERYDAY to cook, feed, and provide care to other senior tenants in her building before and after going to her regular job!
Lucille became a faithful member of the nearby Waters AME Church where she served with the Lay Organization, the Minnie Walden Missionary Society, the Merry Makers, the Altar Guild, the Faithful Workers, and the Chancel Choir. She still could not sing even though she faithfully sat with the sopranos (SMILE). She had so many friends at this church. One best friend was Mrs. Skinner. To this day, her church family still reminisce about their times with her.
Lucille was sick several times where the doctor informed the family that she would not live long, but each time, Lucille got better! When she awakened, she would ask, “Why are all of you here?”
Lucille
Lucille with her plant named Oscar!
13
Everybody would laugh because no one wanted to say we were waiting for her to die. Lucille was famous for saying, “You better stop listening to those doctors. It ain’t over until God say s it over!”
Lucille often asked God why she lived so long on this earth. She missed her mother and her two daughters very much. On Friday morning, May 2, 2008, God finally called Lucille home. She was with her granddaughter, Sharon when she went to heaven! Lucille was 97 years young.
EVERYBODY loved her Jewish Apple Cake, Hershey Syrup cake, ginger cookies, crab cakes, chicken, and nut cookies.
Lucille had 5 children Harold (died as a child), Sylvia, Stan-ley , Beverly, and Sandra. She also called George (Sylvia’s husband) her son too because of their close relationship. Lu-cille had fifteen grandchildren and even more great grandchildren!

Lucille’s Hersey Cake
I know Lucille got the recipe from “somewhere.” So I give the
credit to some magazine or newspaper out there!! Robin
¾ cup Chocolate syrup (recipe below) 3 ¼ cups sifted unbleached all purpose flour 2 1/8 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 2 ½ teaspoon pure vanilla 1 cup unsalted butter – room temperature 2 cups sugar 4 jumbo eggs Chocolate glaze (recipe below) OR powdered sugar
Make the chocolate syrup. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter & flour a tube pan or Bundt pan. Sift 3 ¼ cups flour, the baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside. Combine the milk & vanilla in another separate bowl. Beat 1 cup butter in mixer on moderately high speed until the butter is light and fluffy – about 3 minutes. Add sugar in 2 addi-tions. Beat the sugar for about 2 minutes for each addition. Add eggs into the butter/sugar mix, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. After all eggs have been added, beat the mixture on high for about 2 minutes, scraping down the bowl often. On low speed, beat in the flour mixture in 3 additions alter-nating with the milk mixture (in 2 additions). Begin and end with flour mixture. Pour 2/3 of the batter into the prepared pan. Add baking soda into the chocolate syrup mixture, stirring to blend well. Pour the syrup mixture into the remaining 1/3 batter, blend-ing well. Pour this chocolate batter evenly over the top of the vanilla batter. Do not stir the chocolate batter into the vanilla. Bake in the lower third of the oven until tooth pick inserted comes out clean and dry – about 55 minutes. Cool the cake in the pan for about 10 minutes. Turn out of pan onto the wire rack to com-pletely cool. Make the chocolate glaze. 30 minutes before serving, pour the chocolate glaze evenly over the cake. OR sprinkle pow-dered sugar over cake just as you are ready to served it. Chocolate syrup
½ cup sifted unsweetened cocoa powder, dutch process ¼ cup sugar
¼ cup light corn syrup ½ cup water Pinch of salt ½ teaspoon pure vanilla
Combine everything except the vanilla in a heavy sauce pan. Stir over low heat until blended. Still on low heat, heat mixture to boiling. Cook – stirring constantly until mixture is smooth – about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Add vanilla. Cool to room tem-perature. Chocolate glaze
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped 6 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into 6 pieces ½ cup sugar Pinch of salt ¼ cup milk 1 tablespoon cornstarch ¼ cup light or heavy cream. half & half ok too 1 teaspoon vanilla
Heat the chocolate, butter, sugar, and salt in a small heavy sauce pan over low heat. Stir occasionally, until the chocolate and but-ter are melted and sugar is dissolved. Meanwhile, in a cup, stir just the milk into the cornstarch – blend well. Add this milk mixture AND the cream to the chocolate mix-ture in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat to boiling – stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let the glaze cool for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Transfer it to a measuring cup with a lip on it so you can easily POUR this glaze over the cooled cake.

My dad was always there. I liked to listen to the stories he
used to tell us about his life. I remember when I was in high
school, I wanted my high school ring. My Dad borrowed $17 to
buy my ring. I will always love my Dad. He was the only
REAL man I ever knew.

I remember once: I went to my father’s house. It was early morning
and he was coming down the steps. I said, “Hi Daddy, how are you
doing this morning? “ He said, “I am so tired…,” The look on his face
let me know that he really was.

Louise’s Potato Salad
While working this page, I realized putting Louise’s potato salad recipe down on paper was going to be near impossible. Louise had a big heart & a big family. There really isn’t a recipe for her potato salad, since somehow it changed every time she made it. I guess it depended on how she was feeling and who was demanding her attention! I imagine, she had to hold her love just right to get them ingredients in order. Sometimes it took more or less mayonnaise…or less salt/pepper. What kind of potatoes were available? What about that mayo vs Miracle Whip salad dressing? Not too dry! Not so creamy it might become runny. Can we get just the right tart from the yellow mustard? Louise answered all those questions in a snap!!! So…, I’m giving you the measurements for a small portion as collected from a few folk who might have watched her work that magic in the kitchen!!! You really SHOULD fiddle with it to suit your taste. But just re-member to do it while wearing a “Louise-smile”. Come to think of it, I guess I don’t even need to list the ingredients now that you know her secret - lots of “Hall-Luv”. Cousin Robin
2-3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed, cooked in salted water until just falling apart, drained well in a colander, add back to hot pan to dry out some
OR cook the potatoes whole, skin-on, in salted water, cube later
5 eggs, hard-cooked, peeled and smashed ¾ cup celery, diced ½ cup onion, minced (yellow, red onion, Vidalia all
work nicely) ½ cup dill salad cubes (or dill pickle relish) About 2 tablespoons dill pickle juice 2 - 3 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard Anywhere from 1/2 cup to 1 cup Hellman’s mayon-
naise (more to taste) Sugar to taste Salt and ground black pepper to taste Optional pimentos for appearance Optional ½ teaspoon celery seeds
1. Place the potatoes, eggs, celery, onion and dill salad cubes into a large bowl. 2. Gradually add the mustard and mayonnaise, stirring between additions. 3. You don't want it too creamy, and you don't want it dry. 4. Add salt and pepper, adjusting to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve. If you want it REALLY good, make it a day ahead...it gets better overnight.

She also made Mexican wedding cookies (butter balls) and the Ice-
box cookies. (Recipe attached). These were the family’s favorites.
On September 28, 1980 Doris lost her husband Sammy after thirty
years of marriage. Sammy is buried in Calvert County, where his
mother is also buried.

Inez Julia Hall, was the last child born to Aaron Alexander and Essie Rose Hall. She was born on June 7, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland. On Thursday afternoon January 30, 2014, God called Inez home.
Inez’s husband was Macio White Sr. He was born on September 28, 1921 in Rowan County, North Carolina to Lucille E. Vans. He died on Jun 1976 in Baltimore, Maryland after a long illness.
While Macio grew up in North Carolina, lnez received her education at the original Douglass High School, successfully completing a Commercial Course.
Inez married Macio White Sr. on June 7, 1956 and out of this union, four boys were born. They purchased a home on Penrose Avenue where lnez resided for over fifty years.
Macio was an employee of the Bethlehem Steel Company. lnez worked for several years at the Naron Candy Com-pany, before accepting a career at GSA where she retired after 25 years of Federal Service. Inez continued to work many years after her retirement. Inez worked for Johns Hopkins University for several years before retiring again. Then she worked as a School Bus Attendant at the Douglass Bus Company. During her many years of employment she embraced many people who came to love her.
At an early age Inez accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized. Inez was a member of several Baptist churches before finding her church home at Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church. Inez served on the Steward-ess Board, Missionary Choir, President of the Pastor’s Aide, and volunteered to cook.
TAKEN FROM INEZ’S DIARY SPRING 2013: “We could not go to the movies on Sundays if we didn’t go to church first. It
was Carey Theatre – My friends and I would go to Carey Theatre every Saturday and Sunday. The fare then was 10 cents. It was 10 cents for the movie and the rest went for soda and a hotdog which added up to 25 or 30 cents. I at-tended school #107 at the 1300 block of Stricker Street, All I had to do was go next door I would be in school. I left school #107 and attended senior high school (1301 Druid Hill Ave.) I left there and went to Druid Junior High School. I graduated from there and went to Douglass High School where I graduated. From there, I went to Narron’s candy store to work, Fiske Ice Cream, Mrs. Ihries, and Fort George G. Meade, Department of Defense. Every Sunday morning, my mother would bake biscuits. We had biscuits, sharp cheese, pork chops or chicken, and fish. We had bacon, eggs, and sausage during the week. We didn’t think our dinner was complete if we didn’t have stewed tomatoes. Our house on Stricker Street was 3 stories high. On the third floor, there was 2 bedrooms and a hall big enough for another bedroom. We also had a bookshelf on the third floor over-looking the second floor. On the second floor, there was three bed-rooms, a large hall, a large bathroom, and back stairs leading to the first floor. The first floor had a summer kitchen, a large pantry, living room, hall way and dining room. The basement was large enough for three rooms. We had a front porch, a small side porch, and a very large back yard. That was divided off. Half was the garden, half sitting and hang-ing clothes. We all had a garden in the front of the house too. That’s where we had the pretty flowers, rose bushes, some trees, and of course four o'clocks. On one corner of Stricker Street & Presstman, was Sharon’s Baptist Church. The other was a three-story house. In the middle of Stricker Street was one part of the school. On Laurens and Stricker was a three story house. That’s where my aunt Jean Bell Stewart lived. On the other side was a grocery store. On Lau-rens Street there was Dudes Bar, Jones Bar, Grocery stores, a bakery, Frantherons Joint, and part of the Gilmor home projects. In the back of us was Parris Alley. In the front of us was Whatcoat Street. Parrish Alley had a horse stable and a house where water used to run right down the middle everyday. I lived between Presstman and Laurens Street. In between #107 and my house was a large lot where we played marbles. Of course, we had marble contests. We also played football, baseball, any kind of game you could make-up. That was our play ground. My mother used to have yard parties, in which she sold a variety of food. Our shopping area was Pennsylvania Ave. This is where we did our
shopping because black people was not allowed downtown.”
