Don OskinsFellow 2016 inductee Tony Catapano described Don Oskins as one of the most durable, reliable and consistently solid defensive players he had ever coached . A starting outfielder for Bender Plumbing from 1982-2002, Oskins hit for an estimated average of .600 while batting 5th in the lineup.Bender’s had many talented players but Oskins was one of very few that played every year that Bender Plumbing sponsored a team and he started in every tournament while on the team.Don’s career spanned 30 years. He launched that career with Catapano Auto Body of New Haven in 1973. In 1979 he joined American Plumbing, also of New Haven, before beginning

his 20 year stint with Bender’s in 1982.That ‘82 team won the New Haven City Championship and finished second in the Class A Sectionals. The 1983 squad captured their Sectional but lost in the finals of the States. Then, in 1984, Bender Plumbing registered a clean sweep, winning their Section-als, the States, the New England Regionals before capping off the banner sea-son with the Class A National Championship with Don earning 2nd Team All American honors. For the next ten years, from 1985-1995, Don and his Bender’s teammates were consistent participants in ASA State, Regional and National Tournaments. They won two more Class A State Championships in 1991 and 1993 and earned Na-tional Tournament berths by winning Class A Qualifiers in 1988, 1990 and 1992 with those trips to the Nationals producing five top ten finishes. After a few years’ absence from the National scene, Bender Plumbing reemerged with an Over 40 team. For three straight years they finished in the top three in the Over 40 Nationals (2000-3rd Place and 2001 and 2002-2nd Place).Don Oskins’ steady play for 20 years was a key factor in Bender’s run of success. Besides his 2nd team All American selection in 1982, Don earned All American honors in 1995 and he capped off his career with an All American selection in his final year 2002.While his playing credentials earned him his Hall of Fame selection, Don also was an umpire for 12 years and has been a consistent volunteer for, Leukemia Society “Play to Win” tournament, Jimmy Valvano “Never Give Up” Tournament and Special Olympics.

In August 2006, the sport of softball in Connecticut became unified inhonoring its past with the merging of its fast pitch and slow pitch Halls ofFame. Prior to this merger, the two entities had each separately elected andinducted members to their respective Halls of Fame. That changed with theformation of one combined Hall of Fame to be known as the ConnecticutASA Hall of Fame.

USA Softball of Connecticut commissioner Hank Koritkoski oversees theumbrella organization with the fast pitch and slow pitch committeescontinuing to function as separate groups in selecting candidates for the USA Softball of Connecticut Hall of Fame. USA Softball of Connecticut stages an annual Hall of Fame dinner toformally induct its new members.

The Fast Pitch Hall of Fame was established in 1971, with the Slow PitchHall starting in 1985. Committees to select Hall of Famers meet frequentlyand accept nominations for new candidates. To be eligible for slow pitchconsideration, a player must be retired for 5 years or, if the player is over 50years of age, the 5 year waiting period is waived. The Bernie Iassogna Hall of Honor, named for the nationally and internationally known umpire, is open to managers, coaches, sponsors, umpires and friends of the game.

For fast pitch nominees, applications should be submitted to the Hall of Fame fast pitch committee by April 1 each year. Any individual who had anoutstanding softball career in Connecticut is eligible, with emphasis on state, regional and national tournament play as one of the important crite-ria for Hall of Fame consideration.

In 2017 Connecticut ASA re-branded to USA Softball of Connecticut andofficially opened its physical Hall of Fame display which is located at Erin’sGym in Stratford.

Nick BaiadA life long Bethel, CT native, Nick began his athletic career by being a three sport standout atBethel High School. After graduating high school, Nick went to Providence College where he earned a four year baseball scholarship, a rare accomplishment in that era, and was a starter for those four years. During his college years, he was invited during the summer to play in theprestigious Cape Cod Amateur League.

He was drafted by the Montreal Expos and attended spring training in 1970. When springtraining ended, he was assigned to the Expos’ upstate New York minor league affiliate. After aseason ending injury, he was released and joined

the Dorber Graphics softball team in 1971 where he began his Hall of Fame worthy fast pitch career.

In ten years with Dorber, facing top quality pitching up and down the East Coast, Nick posted the following stats: 1426 ABs; 561 hits; 82 doubles; 12 triples; 97 home runs; and a .393 lifetime batting average.

Nick was the cleanup hitter in the Dorber lineup, a lineup that sported three current members of the Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame. He was voted Dorber’s Most Valuable Offensive Player 3 times, Most Valuable Defensive Player 6 times and Overall Team MVP three times in his ten years with the team. Because of his hitting prowess, few people remember how solid, if not stellar, Nick’s defensive work was at first base.

During Nick’s tenure with Dorber, the team won four state championships, played in seven regional tournaments and won nine Housatonic Fast Pitch League championships.

Nick hit some impressive home runs, but perhaps the longest might have been at Raybestos Memorial Field in Stratford. He hit a shot that not only cleared the fast pitch fence and the permanent fence in left field, it landed in the second row of cars in the parking lot.

Bob BairdFor 50 years Bob Baird has been involved in all aspects of women’s fast pitch softball with theone common thread being his association with the Stratford Brakettes.Baird began covering the Brakettes, first as the Stratford News sports editor in 1967 and thenfor the next 20 years for the Bridgeport Post-Telegram.Before the 1988 season he became the Bra-kettes’ General Manager, a position he con-tinues to hold today. Since 1988 the team has compiled a 1698-138 record with 16 titles, three runnersup, and five third place finishes. In 2006 he got the Connecticut Brakettes into the National Pro Fastpitch League, where they

finished runner-up in both the regular season and post season while the amateur Stratford Brakettes captured the ASA crown.Three times in the past 20 years the Brakettes were on the verge of extinction, but Baird and long time coach John Stratton managed to keep the franchise alive while making the Brakettes experience family friendly, admitting youth softball players into home games free of charge. In addition to his accomplishments with the Brakettes, Baird also achieved success at both the high school and college level.Four years at St. Joseph’s High School produced a 67-25 record, three league championships, four straight CIAC tournament berths and a New York Daily News “Coach of the Year” in 1987. He was an assistant coach at Bunnell High School in 1991 when they won a CCIAC championship before taking over as Stratford High head coach in 2004 when he led the team to a school record 20-6 ledger and a berth in the semifinals of the Class L tournament, the furthestthey have ever advanced.Baird has been the softball chairman and tournament director for the South-West Conference since 1998 and has served as the CIAC softball championship site director since 1999. He is also a member of the CIAC Softball Tournament Committee.Architect of the women’s softball program at Housatonic Community College, Baird compiled a 105-30 record from 1979 to 1982, capturing three state cham-pionships and NJCAA Region 21 tournament berths as well as the 1980 New England Junior College title and a spot in the NJCAA World Series. In 1983 he became an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Sacred Heart University. In his two years there, SHU won two NCAA Division II Regional titles and finished third and fourth, respectively, in the NCAA Division II World Series.

Jeffrey DavisAfter graduating from Derby High School, Jeff began his playing career in 1985 with Hotchkiss Hose in the Valley Firemans League. During his 13 year stint with Hotchkiss, he was a key cog in their winning 11 league championships.

Metal Masters, Club Soda and Beverly Hills Concept were clubs to which he contributed histalents before joining Pepe Construction/ Ever-green, one of the premier state teams of the late80’s and early 90’s, in 1988. Jeff spent six years as that team’s middle infielder and leadoffhitter, highlighted by both a State and New En-gland Regional Class A Championship in 1991.Those high level championships were only the

beginning for Jeff. In 1996 his Midas Touch Jewelers/ ACR squad captured the Connecticut Major crown while he helped Rays Together finish fifth at the B Nationals in 1997.

He was part of the 1997-1998 Ronnie’s Jewelers Coed teams that won back to back state championships. All told, he participated in twenty State and twelve National Tournaments.

Overall Jeff amassed over 800 home runs and maintained a batting average above .700. One accomplishment Jeff is extremely proud of was being chosen to play with the 2003 Century 21 team that raised over $100,000 dollars for the Make A Wish Foundation. While his playing credentials alone are Hall of Fame worthy, Jeff has and still is contributing to the game in other ways. He became an ASA umpire in 1986. In 2013 he became a New Haven Board fast pitch umpire and officiates youth fast pitch tournaments for the CT USA Junior Olympic.

In 2015, Jeff took on the role of CT Junior Olympic State Commissioner. He was the UIC for the Women’s State Tournament in 1999 and 2000.He coached his daughter’s travel team, the Cheshire Wildcats, a team that fin-ished ranked 3rd in the country in 2010 in the10U division and he is still coach-ing with them today. Elmer DeschaineElmer Deschaine is well known for his athletic accomplishments throughout Connecticut. Hewas an All Naugatuck Valley selection in basket-ball during his senior season at Crosby HighSchool in Waterbury. After high school he was on two very successful barnstorming teams, The Boys Club Varsity and The Waterbury National Guards. The youngest member of the teams, he was their leadingscorer, averaging over 25 points per game against veteran players.Elmer earned a basketball scholarship to Gonza-ga University where he averaged 11 points pergame. After graduation, Elmer played baseball in

the Twi-Light League with the Waterville AC,Gleem Paint, Naps and Waterbury Timers. Those teams combined for 16 cham-pionships between 1957 and 1974 and represented the Northeast region in eight Stan Musial World Series from 1962 to 1973, finishing third in 1972. Elmer’s biggest thrill was beating Burt Hooton (of LosAngeles Dodgers fame), scoring from first in the thirteenth inning. While still playing baseball, he was asked to play on John Lattanzio’s highly touted fast pitch Golden Villa Bombers softball team. The Bombers were the only team to register victories over the Raybestos Cardinals, Eddie Feigner’s King and His Court and the Queen and Her Maids. As modified fast pitch softball was gaining in popularity throughout the state, Elmer played for the Brass City League and Town Plot League champions, Golden Villa Bombers and Hill Street Social Club for the next decade. Tournaments like the Ed Connally Memorial were gaining in prestige and popularity. Elmer, along with Hall of Famers Dick Ierardi and Jack Nocera, joined with the up and comingDomar’s Bombers team. He was a key cog for the Domar’s team when they par-ticipated in New England Modified Regional tournaments in Waterville, Maine and Revere, Massachusetts. During his fifteen year modified fast pitch career, Elmer batted over .400 and was notorious for disrupting opponents defenses with his speed and base running acumen. Few who played the game took the extra base more consistently and successfully than Elmer. His outstanding defensive play at shortstop contributed to the success of all the modified fast pitch teams that Elmer played with.A multiple sport standout, Elmer also was an outstanding umpire. He was the CIAC Umpire of the Year in 1993. He officiated in 29 CIAC finals, 10 Mickey Mantle World Series, two Stan Musial World Series, two American Legion World Series and two World Softball World Series.

Pete GribbenPete began his 20 year softball career in 1979 with Spectrum Import from Seymour. Initially he struggled with the slow pitch arc but it didn’t take him long to become one of Connecticut’s most prolific hitters.

Pete played for several of the Naugatuck Valley’s elite teams including Malerba’s, Tailgator’sand Pepe Construction. He played in 3 Section-als, 2 State Tournaments and 1 Regional withthose Valley teams.

Also quite a proficient bowler, Pete was intro-duced in 1985 to Mark “Kip” Tremblay, a 2013Hall of Fame inductee, while bowling. “Kip” was

a mainstay with the powerhouse Sikorsky Aircraft team and convinced Pete to become his teammate. Sikorsky played in some of the most competitive leagues and tournaments in New England and Canada. With Sikorsky, Pete’s reputation as one of the area’s most consistent home run hitters grew.

Those great Sikorsky teams won 9 Industrial National Tournaments and placed second twice. In those tournaments, Pete made 1st team All-American 7 times, and 2nd team All-American twice. He also won the batting title with a .938 avg in 1989.

Pete played with “Kip” on three other local ASA teams, Sherman Tanks, Family Finance and Keystone. With those teams, he appeared in two additional National Tournaments.

Pete retired from the game in 1999 with a lifetime batting average of over .650 and over 1,000 home runs, with the distance of many of them still discussed to this day. He lives in Beacon Falls with his wife Robin and their daughters Samantha, Emily, Erin and Sharon.

During those

twelve years, Preston was an annual qualifier for both the State and New England Regional Tournaments. Not only did they qualify but they ended up capturing four Major State crowns (1972, 1975, 1977 and 1982) and a Regional championship in 1975. That 1975 Preston team also played in the World Tournament in Cleveland, OH. Jody LaMayThey called him “the Bear”. Six feet, 250 pounds or so of offensive power and defensive acumen. Jody LaMay did it all in a 20 year Modified ca-reer that oozes accomplishment and has earned him a deserving place in the Fast Pitch wing of the USA Softball of Connecticut Hall of Fame alongside so many great players including his brother Kevin who was inducted last year. A power-hitting first baseman with startling quickness and soft hands belying a player his size, Jody graced the softball fields around Con-necticut and the country from 1974 through 1994 with some of the best teams this state has ever produced – Foster’s Market, Skider’s Gym, Allyn’s Cleaners and Wolcott Bowl.

There were 18 straight wins in the state tournament and Skider’s would go on to win countless league titles and more than 50 tournaments.

Jody played on five Connecticut State Championship teams. In all, he played in seven National Tournaments and 12 state tournaments.

Jody was never just along for the ride, he was big part of the engine producing the ride. He posted a .390 lifetime batting average including .400 in the Connecticut State Tournament, and blasted over 300 career home runs. In the 1984 National Tournament when Skider’s finished fourth, he hit .500 while driving in ten runs and belting four home runs. In 1982 Jody was honored as the Waterbury Player of the Year.

While Jody was always a good watch with the bat, he was equal to the task with his glove. A starting goalie with the Eastern Connecticut State University soccer team during his college days, little got by him and even less than that got through him. Only his bat took attention away from his glove.

Jody recently retired after 39 years with the Coca-Cola Company. He resides in Thomaston with his wife Leah. They have three children, Derek, Alysia and Dylan.

David “Dave” MurrayDave launched his fast pitch career in 1962 as one of the best fielding shortstops in New England with Spigot Tavern. In 1963 he began a two year stay with the Hart-ford Electric Light Company. That combinewent undefeated in the Industrial Fast Pitch League and qualified for the state tournament both years. Then, in 1965, the East Hartford Dovelettes man-ager Ray McKenna liked what he saw of Dave’s defensive capabilities, invited him on to the team and thus began an eleven year association between the two. In addition, Dave’s low-key personality provided steady and calming leadership to his Dovelette teammates. Dave’s defensive prowess

provided solid support to Dovelette Hall of Fame pitchers, Teddy Kachnowski and Doug Willett. That squad competed against the top teams in New England including the Raybestos Cardinals, the New Britain Mar parks, Electric Boat and Local 59 out of Providence, RI. Yearly appearances in the state tournament was the norm for the Dovelettes. In 1973 Dave was part of the Reed Construction team that not only won their leaguechampionship in Southbridge MA but also went on to capture the State and the New England Regional titles.Dave finished out his career in 1975 with the Dovelettes. He compiled a .305 lifetime batting average with nine home runs.Other highlights of Dave’s 13 year career were playing in the Kerry McGuire Memo-rial Game versus the Raybestos Cardinals and being part of one of the few, if maybe the only team to beat the King and His Court in a series. He faced many legendary pitchers including John Pringle, Rich Norenberg, Al Lewis, Ted Kachnowski, Al Kaczynski, Jim Cheeseman, Jim Hanlon, Hadley Dupree, Sal Amenta. After Dave’s playing days were over, he shared his passion and respect for the game bycoaching youth baseball. From 1978 until 1983 he coached in the East Lyme Little League including a pair of All Star teams. From 1984 until 1986 he managed in the East Lyme Babe Ruth League including one All Star team.He also coached in the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Basketball League from 1982 until 1985.Dave resides in New London with his wife Carol of 53 years . Angelo SantomassimoAngelo has been associated with USA Softball since 1976. Right from the very beginning hewas a player-manager for several highly com-petitive teams including 3 Brothers Sport Shop,Westchester Motor Lines, V.P. Electric, Mid-Town Liquor and his present squad, DeMar’sSoftball.

With these teams he has amassed 34 league titles in East Haven, New Haven and NorthBranford. He guided his teams to eight straight Class D Sectional Championships from 2000 to2007.

On the state level, Angelo managed a Class D State Champion in 2002 and finished second in 2001 and 2007. He also claimed Qualifier Championships in 2015 and 2016.

He brought his teams to the Class D Nationals every year from 2001 to 2007 and then from 2014 to 2016. He finished in the top ten four times, 7th in 2002, 10th in 2014, 6th in 2015 and 5th in 2016. He also went to a Class C National in 2010.

The Richmond Round Robin Memorial Day Tournament that attracted hun-dreds of the best teams from the East Coast was an annual stop from 1984 to 2005. Ten bracket championships were claimed.Angelo also was an ASA umpire from 1976 to 2008. During that time he vol-unteered his officiating services to the Special Olympics, the Jimmy V and the Breast Cancer Tournaments. His on the field accomplishments are many. Howev-er Angelo’s Shoreline Commissioner Ed Emielita summed up the attributes that earned Angelo this year’s Bernie Iassogna Award.

Ed said that the most oustanding features he would attribute to Angelo’s contri-bution to USA Softball were his loyalty, dedication, passion and respect for the game. He was an advocate for the game and always took the field with a sense of integrity and fairness towards his opponent and umpires. He respected the rules and played by the rules.

Angelo did not have a big time sponsor. He spent a lot of time fund raising for his teams and, when that fund raising came up short of meeting expenses, he covered the rest out of his own pocket. He truly had a love for the game.

Angelo resides in East Haven with his wife Kim.

Robert “Sig” SignorSig started playing ASA Softball in 1978 in the New Haven Eighteen and Under League beforemoving on to play for teams like The Deli, Bender Highlanders, and Lockerys to mention a few.

His last stop as an active player was as the play-er/coach for Powsner Auto Body. In 1995, he decided to wear the umpire uniform. Beginning his umpiring in East Haven, Sig’s officiating capabilities proved immediately obvious so that in a very short span of time he began umpiring Sectional and State Tournament games.

He became the Shoreline Sectional Umpire in Chief in 2002 until the Sectionals were discontinued in 2010 due to the lack of teams. It seemed like every state tournament finals he was picked to work on the umpiring crew.

In 1998 and 2001 he represented Connecticut in the New England Regionals. Sig also went on to umpire in 3 National Championship tournaments.Signor received the National Indicator Award in 2013. At the current time, he serves on the Board of Directors of East Haven and also umpires in the North Branford and New Haven Associations.

Each year Sig donates his time umpiring Special Olympics.

He joined Town & Country for their 1978 trip to the Modified National Tournament inWaterville, ME, a tournament in which they came in third.

From 1982 to 1985, Al played with Domar’s Warriors. The 1983 Warrior squad qualified for the Modified Nationals in Austin, MN.

Overall Bill amassed over 1200 home runs and maintained a lifetime bat-ting average of .700.While acknowledged to be statistically an outstanding player both offensively and defensively, he has also added to his Hall of Fame credentials in other ways.
