Successfully Drill and Case Directional Wells with Reduced NPTDirectional Casing While Drilling protects every foot drilled on your way to the reservoir. By providing you the ability to steerthe casing, Halliburton and TESCO deliver the capability to successfully reach difficult directional targets in mature basins.

Significant non-productive time can result when attempting to drill through formations with wellbore stability issues common inmature basins. Hole collapse, lost circulation, and stuck pipe can all lead to increased cost and time. Directional Casing WhileDrilling can overcome these challenges.

Cuttings in the reduced annular space between the casing and the borehole wall are “plastered” or smeared onto the formation face, creating a sealing mechanism that strengthens weak formations, increasing stability and reducing torque and drag.

Integrating Proven Technologies to Achieve New CapabilitiesIn order to steer the casing string, Halliburton has collaborated with TESCO to integrate the Geo-Pilot® rotary steerable system,InSite® Generation™ LWD, and XR™ reamer into the TESCO CASING DRILLING™ system. This collaboration has resulted in acomplete solution that significantly increases your chances of reaching the reservoir in the most challenging wellborestability environments.

BENEFITS• Reduce personnel risk by eliminating casing crew

• Enhance well control through continuous circulationwhile tripping BHA

• Reduce number of casing strings required to reachTD and significantly reduce drilling cost

• Reach previously undrillable targets and increaseNet Present Value of your asset

FEATURES• Complete systems available for 7”, 9-5/8” and13-3/8” casing

• Short BHA “stick-out” beyond casing shoe minimizesexposure time of unstable formations

• Zero rig time required for surveys due to acquisitionwhile making connections

• Zero rig time required for RSS commands using theGeo-Span® downlinking system

• Precise directional control with over 12,000 availablesettings for the Geo-Pilot rotary steerable system

• Superior borehole quality through use of Security DBSGeo-Pilot® extended gauge bits

• Fully retrievable BHA ensures hole is protected duringbit trips

Case HistorySperry Drilling Services and TESCO successfully steered a7-5/8” x 7” casing string using Casing Drilling technology. The customer requested the ability to rotate continuouslyand drill with aerated fluid. This required a slimholerotary steerable system that could operate in conjunctionwith electromagnetic (EM) telemetry.

The directional BHA consisted of a Geo-Pilot® 5200Series slimhole rotary steerable system, equipped with aGeo-Pilot extended gauge bit from Security DBS, theMercury™ electromagnetic telemetry MWD system and aTESCO 8-7/8” underreamer. The rotary steerable,EM-MWD and underreamer were run below a highperformance mud motor. The motor increased the RPMat the bit and underreamer for better ROP. The rotarysteerable significantly improved the daily footagecompared to oriented drilling with a mud motor.

The rotary steerable built angle from 12° to 20° in 6-1/8”hole at build rates of more than 4.5 °/100 ft and thenmaintained hole inclination.

The EM telemetry provided 100% detection at more thantwice the data rate of conventional telemetry.

TESCO CASING DRILLING™ has evolved from simplevertical drilling to complex directional profiles.(Data as of 03/08)
