Printing TipsHallmark Card Studio is compatible with most Windows-compatible printers.Make sure that you follow the care and maintenance instructions for yourprinter. Follow your printer manufacturer’s advice about the type of ink andcartridges to use. If there are problems with the color or ink, such as unevenappearance or colors that do not match the screen colors, refer to the printermanual for troubleshooting and technical support.

To preserve the original colors of your creation, store your card away frommoisture and light.

Using an Inkjet PrinterInkjet printers print by spraying tiny dots of ink on the paper. The printeraccepts information from the computer about what to print for a few lines ofdots at a time. The speed of printing may vary, depending on the speed of yourcomputer, the amount of memory in your computer, virtual memory settings, and whether or not you are using print spooling. See your printer manual forsuggestions.

Ink requires time to dry. The amount of time varies depending on the type ofink, the absorbency of the paper, the density of the color, and the humidity. Ingeneral, avoid touching the ink.

Using a Laser PrinterLaser printers print by applying the toner to the paper under heat. The printer“builds” the entire page to be printed in its memory before it begins printing. Bepatient; it may take a while for the computer to print and the laser printer to“compose” your creation. (If the Form Feed light on your printer is on or theOnline light is blinking, that usually means everything is okay and the printer isworking.)

If your printer doesn’t have enough memory, you may get a Memory Overflowmessage on the printer or computer screen, or only part of a page may print.See your printer manual for help.

Choosing the PaperChoosing the right paper is a key factor in making your Hallmark Card Studiocard look professional. The thickness, or weight, of the paper is important. If thepaper is too thin, the ink may bleed through or make it so wet that it appearswavy. If the paper is too thick, it may not feed through the printer well or it maynot fold smoothly and crisply.

Your printer manual will indicate what weight of paper can be used in theprinter. Look in the Specifications section and under Paper in the index of yourprinter manual for this information. Generally, 60-, 70-, or 80-pound paper givesthe best results.

If you are printing a single-fold card on two sheets, we recommend you use aheavier paper for the cover and a lighter paper for the insert page with theinside message.

Let the experts at Hallmark help you create beautiful and professional-lookingcards. Your creativity, combined with our wide variety of images and messages, printed on just the right card stock, will make any project a success. Hallmarkoffers white and ivory card stock, pre-scored for your convenience. Tips for Printing Photo CardsIf you’re printing a photo card instead of a regular greeting card, here are sometips to help you print your photo cards successfully.

• By default, your printer is set up to print in Portrait mode, which is correctfor vertical photo cards. To print a horizontal photo card, change yourprinter to print in Landscape mode by clicking the Printer Setup button onthe Print screen.

• If you have a low-end, top-feed printer, you may not be able to printhorizontal photo cards directly. You may have to adjust the card design toprint vertically if that is the only way to feed the photo card paper throughyour printer. Alternatively, you could print the photo card on full-sizedphoto paper and then cut the excess paper.

• Check with your printer’s documentation for printing on photo paper. Youmay need to keep a minimum number of sheets in the printer and, possibly, make adjustments to the paper tray.

• Handle the photo card paper by the edges to prevent smudges.

• Check with the paper’s specifications for use. Photo paper can be sensitiveto temperature conditions and humidity. If the paper is curling, don’t use it.You may have to flatten it manually.

• Keep any unused paper in its original packaging. If possible, store it in a coolplace with the paper lying flat.

Feeding the PaperTypical laser and copier bond papers are fine for printing. However, to give yourcards a more professional look, you may want to use higher-quality papers.

Often, higher-quality paper is a different weight than the paper you normally usein your printer. If it is very different, you may need to change one or more ofthe following settings:

• A manual-feed/auto-feed setting in the Printer Setup dialog box.

• A manual-feed/auto-feed setting on your printer.

• Mechanical switches on your printer.

Consult your printer manual for exact instructions.

If you are going to print your card on both sides of a sheet of paper, make sureyou understand how to place the already-printed side of the paper in the papertray when you print the second side. Consider printing a test copy onto plainpaper first.

Feeding EnvelopesTo print envelopes properly, Hallmark Card Studio must know exactly howenvelopes are fed into your printer. See online help for detailed informationabout using the Printing Envelopes wizard. Please check your printer’s manual toverify the information needed for Hallmark Card Studio envelope configuration. In addition, you may need to change the paper feed guides on your printer forenvelopes. This information will also be found in your printer’s manual.

Chapter 7:Adding Graphics

Hallmark Card Studio projects are made up of graphics, shapes, symbols, andlines as well as text. Graphic objects are surrounded by frames. You can move, resize, shape, and replace graphics.

This chapter explains how to:

• Work with the frames that surround all graphics.

• Use the Clip Art Book to find graphics and add them to projects.

• Insert shapes into your projects.

• Select the graphics collections to view.

• Import photos into your projects.

Learning about Graphic FramesEvery graphic or text object in a project is surrounded by a frame, although yousee the frame only when you select the object. You cannot move, reshape, oredit the contents of a frame unless the frame itself is active; that is, selected andvisible on the screen.

To select a frame:

• Click the frame.

To select a frame that is behind another frame:

1 Click a frame in the project.

2 Press Tab repeatedly to cycle through the frames until you select the frameunderneath.

Changes you make to a frame affect everything within the frame in the sameway. Usually, only one frame is active at a time, but there are ways to selectmultiple frames. No two objects ever occupy the same frame.

Vertical Resizing HandleYou can use a top or bottom handle to increase anddecrease the height of the frame while keeping thewidth constant.

Horizontal Resizing HandleYou can use a side handle to increase and decrease thewidth of the frame while keeping the height constant.

Note: When resizing frames, by default, the handle opposite the one you are usingfor resizing remains anchored during resizing. However, you can resize around thecenter of the frame by pressing Ctrl while resizing. This is especially handy whenyou have centered an object on your project and want to resize it without havingto center it again when you’re finished.

RotationYou can rotate a frame to any angle by using the handle extending horizontallyfrom the center. Rotating the frame rotates the angle of the contents but doesnot alter the contents. The frame rotates around its center, not the center ofthe project. The handle in the center of the frame shows where the center ofrotation for that frame is.

Using the Workspace to Crop ObjectsYou cannot directly edit the contents of a graphic image or a shape. If you wantto use part but not all of a graphic or shape (or text or a photo), try moving theunwanted portion of the object off the edge of the project. Though still part ofthe object, the unwanted portion will be hidden and will not print. The rest ofthe object can be moved back onto the page if you want it in your projectagain. The unwanted portion will be invisible on your screen and will not print.

You can also cover part of an object with a rectangle of the same color as theobject’s background. Place the rectangle over the unwanted portion of theobject to hide it from view.

Note: You can use PhotoPower, included with certain versions of Hallmark CardStudio, to adjust raster images (such as digital photos). See Chapter 9: Workingwith PhotoPower for details.

Duplicating ObjectsIt’s easy to duplicate objects with the Duplicate command. Use this command tomake a copy of the selected object. The new object appears on top so that itoverlaps but doesn’t completely cover the original object.

Use this to quickly copy and place objects that you want repeated in yourproject. You can still resize and reposition all of the objects as you like, using thehandles.

To duplicate an object:

2 From the Edit menu, click Duplicate. A duplicate object appears in the project, overlapping the original one.

3 Repeat step 2 to create additional duplicate objects.

Overlaying ObjectsHallmark Card Studio projects can consist of carefully arranged overlays ofgraphics, symbols, shapes, lines, and text blocks. Shapes especially are oftenplaced behind all the other elements of a project to give it visual balance.

The Bring to Front, Send to Back, Bring Forward One, and Send Back Onecommands on the Order submenu of the Object menu are designed to helpcontrol the objects in your project overlay.

• The Send to Back command places the selected object behind all otherobjects in the project.

• The Bring to Front command places the selected object in front of all otherobjects in the project.

• The Bring Forward One and Send Back One commands are useful whenyou have several overlapping objects placed on your project. Thesecommands move the selected object forward or backward one level.

Object order is defined by the order in which the objects are originally placedon the project, not by the objects’ relationship to one another on the project. Ifyou use the Send Back One command, for example, and it does not producethe expected results, it is probably because the objects you are trying to movewere actually placed several levels apart from one another.

You can create complex overlays using these four commands, and experimentwith different layout possibilities.

To change an object’s order:

1 Select the object to change.

2 From the Object menu, choose Order>Bring to Front, Order>Send toBack, Order>Bring Forward One, or Order>Send Back One.

Note: If you ever lose an object while using these commands, it might be coveredby a larger graphic or other object. Select the larger object and use Send to Back

to put it in the background. Then the smaller object will appear again.

Working with Overlapping GraphicsYou can place, select, and manipulate overlapping text and graphical objects on aproject page.

Using Close ViewsGraphics and text are inserted at the default size relative to your screen. However, if you zoom in on your project and then insert the objects, this willmake inserted text and graphics smaller relative to your project. You might findusing close views in this way faster and more precise when you want to inserttype in a small point size, shrink a graphic, or select an object from a group ofclosely placed objects.

Selecting Objects with the Tab KeyIf you are having trouble selecting objects with the mouse, try using the Tab key.The Tab key cycles through objects on the workspace.

To select an object with the Tab key:

1 Select any object on the workspace.

2 Press Tab until the object you want is selected.

Centering and Aligning ObjectsUse the following procedures to center and align objects on a project page.

Centering ObjectsYou can use centering commands to place one or more objects at the verticalor horizontal center of a project page. You can center objects vertically, horizontally, or both. If you’ve selected more than one object, centering isindividually performed on all selected objects.

Note: Centering multiple objects can cause them to overlap, or can cause largerobjects to cover smaller objects. For hints on displaying, selecting, and reorderingoverlapping or covered objects, see Working with Overlapping Objects.

Center graphics vertically (top to From the Object menu, choose bottom) on a project page Center>Vertically.

Center graphics both horizontally From the Object menu, choose (left to right) and vertically (top Center>Both.to bottom) on a project page

Aligning ObjectsYou use aligning commands or buttons to align multiple objects (graphic, shape,or text objects) on a vertical or horizontal plane. When you align objects, thecenters of all selected objects are aligned to the center of the first object youselected. Because the aligning commands work with multiple objects, you mustselect at least two objects for the commands or buttons to become available.

To align objects:

1 Select two or more objects on the project page by pressing Shift whileclicking each of the objects. You may select any mix of text, shape or graphic objects.

2 From the Object menu, click Align Objects Horizontally or click the AlignHorizontally button.Objects are aligned on a horizontal plane, using the first selected object’scenter.orFrom the Object menu, click Align Objects Vertically or click the AlignVertically button.Objects are aligned on a vertical plane, using the first selected object’scenter.

Selecting and Grouping ObjectsYou can select multiple objects and group them to work on more than oneobject at once. For example, you might want to resize everything to better fit onyour page, or tilt or rotate two separate text blocks. With multiple selection andgrouping, you can select and work with more than one object at a time.

Selecting ObjectsWith a multiple selection you can perform commands simultaneously onseparate objects, but they are still treated as separate objects rather than as agroup. Each object still rotates, skews, and resizes around its own center, not thecenter of the group of objects.

To select multiple objects:

• From the Edit menu, click Select All. orPress Shift while you select each object. orDrag the pointer around the objects you want (marquee selection).

Note: The starting point for marquee selection must be outside of any object’sframe. If you have a background in your project, zoom out and start yourmarquee selection on the workspace.

Every command that you apply affects all the selected objects (until you unselectthem).

Changing the Shape of Your PicturesPart of the fun of working with digital pictures is the ability to trim (or crop) a picture or cut out an area of a picture and then add it to a project.

There are several ways to change the shape of your pictures:

• Trim: Define an area you want to keep and throw away the rest.

• Cutout Shapes: Create a cutout using a preset shape.

Chapter 10: Working with Projects

While most of the instructions given for greeting cards are applicable to theother projects available in Hallmark Card Studio, this chapter has project-specificinformation to help you work with various projects. For information on 3Dcards and other 3D projects, see Chapter 11: Working with 3D Projects.

This chapter gives project-specific information for the following project types:

• Announcements, invitations, note cards, and photo frames

• Certificates, scrapbook pages, and stationery

• Envelopes

• Gift tags and labels

• Postcards

• Stickers

• Matching sets

• Calendars

To work with non-greeting card projects, click Other Projects on the Homescreen. Then select the project type in the Other Projects list to browsethrough that project’s designs.

Announcements, Invitations, Note Cards, and PhotoFrames

These four project types are all variations on greeting cards. In general, you’llprint these projects on one side of a sheet of paper and then fold the paper tocreate the announcement, invitation, note card or photo frame. Invitations, announcements, and note cards are usually quarter-fold cards; while photoframes are half-fold cards. If you wish, you can change the fold type on the Printscreen.

The Photo Frames project type has a photo placeholder on the front panelwhere you can quickly place a digital photo. Click Place Photo Here to open thePhoto dialog box to select and adjust a photo for the photo frame.

Certificates, Scrapbook Pages, and StationeryThese project types are all single-page projects that print onto a sheet of paper. You can adjust the orientation of a design in Art Studio. See Chapter 5: UsingArt Studio for details.

The Scrapbook Pages project type has one or more photo placeholders whereyou can quickly place a digital photo. Click Place Photo Here to open the Photodialog box to select and adjust a photo for the photo placeholder.

EnvelopesThe envelope designs print onto standard-sized envelopes (such as a No. 10 oran envelope for a single-fold card).

Note: If you click Envelope on the Print screen for a card, you can add a returnaddress and mailing address to a plain envelope, but no design. To print a designon a card, you must use either a ready-made design from the Envelopes categoryor create one in Art Studio for a blank envelope template.

Before printing the first envelope after installing Hallmark Card Studio, you’ll beasked to go through the Printing Envelopes wizard. Check with your printer’sdocumentation to learn how to feed envelopes through your printer to answerthe questions in the Printing Envelopes wizard. After you go through the wizard,Hallmark Card Studio will show you how to insert an envelope into your printereach time you print an envelope. See Feeding Envelopes in Chapter 3: HallmarkCard Studio Basics for more information.

Gift Tags and LabelsWhen printing gift tags and labels, you usually print more than one item on asheet of paper. For gift tags, there are usually 8-10 per sheet of paper.

Page 109: Hallmark Card Studio

101

Depending on the type of label stock, there may be 2-80 labels on a sheet. Forexample, if you are printing address labels there could be 30 labels on the sheet(3 columns of 10 rows). On the Print screen you can determine how manyitems to print and where to start printing on the paper.

When you print this type of project, you will print identical designs — althoughyou can have different names (and addresses) print with the same design byusing names (and addresses) from your Event Planner Address Book. To do this,in Art Studio, insert replaceable fields for the name (and address). Forinformation, see Chapter 5: Using Art Studio.

Note: If you’ve added replaceable fields, you cannot automatically print a full sheetof items.

You may want to do a test print on standard paper first before printing a sheetof items. This way you can be sure that you’re using the right layout for yourtype of paper stock. Print a draft version of the project onto a sheet of plainwhite paper and place it on top of a sheet of special paper stock for that item.Hold both in front of a bright light to see if the design is within each item’sprintable area. You may have to adjust the design’s location on the Print screenwith the Vert and Horz nudge buttons to have the items print correctly.

Check with your printer’s manual to see if there are restrictions on putting asheet of paper through more than once if you are printing less than a full sheet.

You can have Hallmark Card Studio use addresses from your EventPlanner Address Book to print the same postcard for mailing to different people(for example, a change of address notice). To do this, in Art Studio, insertreplaceable fields on the address side. For information, see Chapter 5: Using ArtStudio.

When printing postcards, you usually print more than one item on a sheet ofpaper. Postcard stock usually has 2-4 postcards, but sometimes 1 postcard, persheet of paper. Because postcards are double-sided, you’ll reinsert the paper toprint the second side, which is the address side. Hallmark Card Studio shows ananimation to help you re-insert the paper properly in your printer. If you haven’tprinted a two-sided project before, you’ll have to go through the wizard.
