ORIGINS•Celtic origins
•The ancient celtic festivity of Samhain
celebrated the end of summer and the
beginning of winter. It started the
evening of October 31st.

RITUALS• Celtic druids organized religious rituals.
• They believed that ghosts, witches and evil spirits returned on the night of October 31st.• They made bonfires and wore frightened
costumes to send evil spirits away.

Jack-o-Lanterns• Irish people used to carry turnips with candles
inside them to light their way and also to scare off any ghosts.
• A miserable man called Jacked tricked with the devil. He was unable to enter heaven or hell after his death, he was destinated to roam the earth listlessly.

• Jack placed a piece of coal into carved-out turnip and used it as a lantern to keep the evil away.
• TodayChildren cut the shape of eyes, nose and mouth in a pumpkin and put a candle inside of it.

TRICK OR TREAT• It originates from Britain and Ireland.
• It dates back to Middle Ages when poor people used to go door to door on Hallowmass receiving foor in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day.

Today: Children go from door to door knocking and saying `trick or treat´ in exchange for sweets or sometimes money
