Team—Together Everyone Achieves More!
Attention parents, students and members of our J.R. Reid Community: Wow! The first month has passed us by already. The students have adjusted to revised schedules, daily routines, new teachers, expectations of school and getting up early. Come to think of it, so have the teachers and the principal. Overall, it's good to have everybody back in routine. Some highlights from the first month of school: Volleyball has started for our grade seven and eights; a big thank-you goes out to all of our coaches. The golf team for grade seven and eight has been practicing for their upcoming jamboree; as well, the grades four to sixes are preparing for their soccer jamborees. Our entire school took part in a cross grade, multi-age group activity entitled, "Pinwheels for Peace". The students were put in mixed grade groups and worked with a supervising teacher on an art activity, creating and coloring/decorating a pinwheel then displaying it in the school yard on International Peace Day. Two of our lucky students actually got their picture in the Brandon Sun for this activity. Congrats to our excellent parent volunteers from our parent council for all of their hard work with the Family BBQ. It was a huge success. Thanks to all of our parents for helping with the parent run lunch program and volunteering in the library. Let's hope October flies by just as quickly! Yours in Education, Shawn Lehman Principal We’re on the web! www.brandonsd.mb.ca/jrreid

The Winnipeg Free Press offers the PDF version of the Winnipeg Free Press newspaper to schools for educational purposes at NO COST. This is not just the breaking news website but the complete version. JR Reid staff and students can gain access to the website starting at 6:30am, Mon-Sat, from their homes or from the school. This is a valuable resource tool for all staff, students and their families! To access the Winnipeg Free Press website. Go to http://winnipeg.ca.newsmemory.com/. In recognition of World Food Day on October 16, JR Reid will be participating in the FCC Drive Away Hunger campaign again this year. Last year, the program collected over 2,500 kg of food for Canadian Food Banks. Your child will have brought home a letter last week, detailing the types of food donations most needed, which they can bring in between October 1 – 12. At the end of the campaign we will have a special assembly to make our donation to our local food bank, Brandon’s Samaritan House. Please support those in need in our community. The lunch program is well under way!
We’d like to remind you that the school is peanut/
nut/egg free.
► Please be sure to read all labels carefully to
ensure that any prepared food is made in a nut
free facility.
► Be careful not to send eggs to school. Food is
not safe if you can idenFfy the egg—for
example egg salad sandwiches, or boiled eggs.
If the egg is cooked into the food it is safe as the
chemical composiFon of the egg is changed.
For example: breads, muffins, or buns are
acceptable.
If your child has forgo6en his / her lunch and
does not have money for the canteen. He/she
will be allowed to call home to see if
arrangements can be made. Please try not to send
lunches mid way through the morning, as it disrupts
teaching Fme. (#1 = 10; #2 = 60; #3 = 7)
The canteen is up and running. We do encourage a
packed lunch first and foremost. We do not have
fridges available to students, so please be sure to
send something non-perishable, or include an ice
pack in your child’s lunch bag. There are
microwaves available to re-heat food.

Imagine…“Whirled Peace”
In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. On September 21, 2012 J. R. Reid School took part in an
InternaFonal art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, by “planFng” pinwheels with messages of peace at their school.
Pinwheels for Peace is an art installaFon project started in 2005 by two Art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut
Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first
year, groups in over 1,325 locaFons throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on September 21st - there were
approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. Last year (year 7), 2011, over 4 million pinwheels were
spinning in over 3,500 locaFons, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South
America.
This project is non-poliFcal – peace doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with the conflict of war, it can be related to
violence/intolerance in our daily lives, to peace of mind. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it
all comes down to a simple definiFon: “a state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence, freedom from
conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.”
Students at J. R. Reid created pinwheels. As part of the creaFon process, the students wrote their thoughts about "war and
peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side. On the other side, they visually expressed their feelings. The
students assembled these pinwheels in mulF-age groups and on InternaFonal Day of Peace they "planted" their pinwheels in
front of their school as a public statement and art exhibit/installaFon.
The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country and the world!
