Thoughts for Our Students — “Stand Up” for Our Earth

Although it might seem to you that we have always celebrated Earth Day, its observance is rather new for our country. It began as an idea from Senator Gaylord Nelson back in 1962. He saw how people weren’t taking care of our environment, and he thought something should

be done to correct it. On April 22, 1970, more than 20 million demonstrators and thousands of schools and local communities participated in Nelson’s event. The response was so amazing that even the United Nations got in-volved, declaring Earth Day as an international

holiday. On this Earth Day, remember how great events begin with an idea and a dream. What will you do to add to this dream? How will you “stand up” and show appreci-ation for the Earth?

During the months of April and

May, students in grades 3, 4 and 5

will be participating in the 2015

Pennsylvania System of School

Assessment (PSSA).

All students in these grades will

take assessments in English lan-

guage arts and mathematics. In

addition, fourth graders will take

the PSSA Science assessments.

The assessment windows for each

assessment are as follows:

PSSA ELA (Grades 3-5) Four

Sections: April 13-17, 2015

PSSA Math (Grades 3-5)

Three Sections: April 20-24,

2015

PSSA Science (Grade 4 only)

Two sections: April 27-May 1,

2015

PSSA Make-Ups for All Sec-

tions: May 4-8, 2015

The information obtained from

the assessments serves as a valua-

ble tool for planning future school

programs, developing curriculum

and in-service training of teach-

ers, and informing the public

about student achievement. The

ELA, mathematics and science

sections of the assessments will

yield individual student reports,

as well as school, district, and

state data. All students are ex-

pected to participate in the state

testing program.

Parents may help their children

prepare for the assessments by

stressing that it is important for

them to do their very best. They

may also reassure children that

the assessments give them an

opportunity to demonstrate their

learning and help teachers plan

the best possible instruction for

them.

Students are en-couraged to wear their team colors that day, cheer their team leaders on during the game, and attempt to match the answers given by their staff leaders. For safety reasons, please do not have your child wear face paint or colored hairspray. Points will be earned when students success-

To celebrate achieving our Race for Education $15,000 goal that we reached in the fall, we will be hosting a “Match Game Challenge” on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 1:45 to 2:45 pm. Due to space con-straints, the assembly will be for students and staff only. However, we are inviting the AM Kindergarten students with parent transportation back to school in the afternoon to watch the event if they would like to see it. We are asking Ms. Caldwell’s AM students to

fully match the answers of their staff leaders! The team with the most points will be awarded first place!

We at Hallowell are excited to

inform you that our school will

be continuing a reading incentive

program through the months of

April and May. The theme for

our reading program will be

called “Be a Reading Hero!” We

began this program in March

and conclude on Friday, May 29.

The students receive reading logs at the beginning of each month. They will be asked to take their reading log home and record the number of minutes that they read each evening. Some read-
