Traditional Hallway:

WhyitMATTERS: • Space is a valuable and limited resource in school districts • Space is aquired with money, which is also a limited resource in school

districts • Students are more likely to be successful if they have choices for how

they learn • Teachers that strive for differential learning need spaces that cater

towards the different learning styles, and can be adjusted to serve multiple purposes

• Studies show that learning from peers, and not only from the teacher, is equally or more valuable

Fanning/Howey Associates claims that 32% of K-12 facility gross area

is circulation!

Double-loaded

corridor = oppressive!

Project: • Design a conceptual hallway space in a high school that goes beyond the

definition of circulation, but incorporates the diverse learning needs within an educational facility.

challenges:

GOAL:

• Create a repeatable design concept • Design a space that brings together multiple learner-centered spaces

into one community space • Provide spaces for all group sizes, from individual to large group • Support differentiated instruction and learning styles • Incorporate specific types of lighting for differing needs

• Create a ‘learnway’ that doesn’t stop pedestrian traffic, but interrupts it; encouraging students a pause to study, talk, laugh, learn, and embrace the positive environment that is right outside the classroom.
