Welcome to the first edition of 2015

It’s always a little quieter in January for the building, which gives us time to reflect on the last 12 months. Here’s a few of our successes from the year gone by...

We’ve created a wonderful reading room (available to rent - see back cover), had two wonderfully successful month long pop-up shops, expanded our events team, hired a chef in residence and now have CoResist creating wonderful in-house events!

In this edition we have a list of courses / classes / events / workshops and exhibitions - highlights include: Our Nuclear Future (pg8) and the ‘Aluna’ film screening (pg9).

We’re celebrating over a year of ‘Artist of the Month’ and pleased to say the exhibitions thus far have been a roaring success. The artist for this month is Jonothan Byles (images below).

Help! We need your votes now! As part of an exciting collaboration with the Bristol Biennial, Hamilton House have been offered the chance to host a fantastic artwork by Shaun Badham, but we need your votes to make it happen! The 4 meter long, neon artwork is touring various venues across the city for the next two years and we’d really like to have it installed on the top of the building during the dark days of winter to help brighten our spirits. The artwork spells out the message “I’m staying” in huge neon lights - a message that means many things to many people but we feel is a wonderful, positive statement of intent for the community of Stokes Croft as well as anyone who uses and sup-ports projects like Hamilton House that occupy the city’s empty and un-used spaces. However in order to get the artwork installed we really need your help to win an on-line vote against other venues across the city . . . so can you spare 2 minutes to help? Every vote counts but we need your votes as soon as possible, to vote for Hamilton House we need you to log on to the Bristol Biennial website at:

Empyreal Quartet - Led by French sax player Julien Alenda and featuring a couple of Italians - Pasquale Votino (bass) and Paolo Adamo (drums) - as well as English guitarist Dan Waldman this quartet truly speaks the international language of jazz, with a surprisingly American accent as it goes.

8Latin Descarga - When a classy house band welcomes tasty guest musicians up to jam on their favourite Latin tunes it's called a Descarga. It's a quality crew and the vibe will be muito fantástico!

9The Inexplicables - This almost uncategorisable fusion of folk, soul, jazz, reggae and beatbox hip-hoppery should be filed under 'fresh', 'catchy' or just plain 'groovy'.

10The Rumble-O’s - Their punctuation might be rubbish but their influences (including twangbar legends Hank Marvin and Dick Dale) are impeccable and their aim is certainly true.

11Al Fresco Trio - Another quirky offshoot from the sizzling musical cauldron that is Sheelanagig, Catlow (violin), Hawes (guitar) and Suitton (bass) pick'n'mix their way through a riotous grab bag of jazz and swing standards.

12Canteen Hip Hop Sessions - Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultra-funky DeCyphers collective for a monthly exploration of all things hip (and, indeed, hop).

13Two Man Ting - The rich flavours of Sierra Leone conjured up as Jah-Man Aggrey's voice and djembe weave around the jangling guitar loops of Jon Lewis in Jah-man's original songs.

14Madilan (Loop Set)- Another new alias for restlessly creative drummer Barney Sage showing off his multi-instrumental talents on a new album of electro-dance meets ‘real‘ drums numbers.

15Chirimoya - Showing off the equally great percussion and vocal talents of Tammy Payne this new project grabs the midsummer sweat of New Yorican Latin-jazz heroes.

16Ilu Axe - Say it 'Ee-loo-ash-ay' - the rhythm of life - and this tightly choreographed troupe of singers, percussionists and drummers will lift up yours with traditional samba-reggae grooves.

17Wormwood Presents… Gnawa Blues All-Stars - Gnawa is a driving trance music from North Africa & Simo Lagnawi has pulled together his All Stars in a rolling, masterful fusion.

18Fish & Bird - Like Tom Waits (whose enigmatic song gave them their name) British Columbian quintet Fish & Bird use the toolbox of Americana roots to build a new acoustic folk-rock world, their dreamlike songs embellished with fiddle and banjo from a timeless future.

19Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & Latin tunes.

20Just 3 Harmony - It's amazing how much music this trio can conjure from Everton Hartley's guitar, the occasional bit of snappy hand-clapping and three finely tuned voices.

28Ruth Royall - Svelte-voiced and soulful singer Ruth Royall has an old-school jazz wisdom at the heart of her songwriting and performance so the acquisition of a new 7-piece (count ‘em!) band should give her the canvas to paint some pretty big and jazzy pictures.

29Schoolboy’s Death Trio - Saxophonist and rhymester Andrew ‘Schoolboy‘ Neil Hayes and his three chums make a fabulous jazz-hop cocktail out of his boiling indignation at the wicked ways of the world.

30Vamos - One of Bristol's best mestizo bands, conjuring a smile-inducing Eurobeat from their mix of Spanish, French and English roots and then stirring in a healthy pinch of Caribbean spices.

31Mankala Band - With a strong grounding in upbeat African dance rhythms from Soukous to Afrobeat, The Mankala Band's refreshed line-up always catch that rolling instrumental good-time sound.

Our Nuclear Future is series of events as part of CoResist’s ‘Our Nuclear Heritage’ Project.

CoResist are curating a collection of talks, workshops, performances, installations, happenings and research, specifi-cally looking at Our Nuclear Future.

There will be collaborations between artists, scientists, public and professionals; lots of opportunities to find out more about the future we’re creating and the role of our nuclear heritage within it; and an opportunity to express how you feel, and to take action to shape the future you want.
