VS. When President Washington appointed his Cabinet, he included Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury and Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. These two Cabinet members disagreed on many issues on both domestic and foreign policies. They battled about how to handle the debt from the American Revolution, creating a national bank, how the new nation should support international revolutionaries and how much power the federal government should have. These disagreements led to the establishment of two new political parties Federalists, led by Hamilton and Republicans, led by Jefferson. Which political party do you agree with most? Check the appropriate boxes in each round to reveal who you would consider the winner of this grudge match!

“All communities divide themselves into the few and the many. The first are the rich and well born; the other, the mass of people…The people are turbulent and changing; they seldom judge or

determine right. Give therefore to the first class a…permanent share in the government…they therefore will ever maintain good government.”- Alexander Hamilton. Agree? Check right.

“I am not among those who fear the people. They, not the rich, are our dependence for continued

freedom.” Thomas Jefferson. Agree? Check left.

I believe an economy should be based on industry and manufacturing. If you agree, check to the right.

to the states, or to the people…” Thomas Jefferson. Agree? Check right.

“The powers contained in a constitution…ought to be construed liberally (broadly applied) in advancement of the public good.” Alexander Hamilton. Agree? Check left.

I support the party that is comprised of the rich and educated citizens.. If you agree,

check to the right. I support the party that is comprised of small farmers, small business owners and farmers. If you

agree, check to the left.

In order to pay off national debts, I agree with Hamilton’s bold economic plan to raise revenue. Congress should approve taxes on products like whiskey made in the United States. I also agree with

his proposal to create Bank of the United States to centralize federal government finances. If you agree, check to the right.

I agree with Jefferson, who objected to new taxes to pay off debts because these taxes mainly burdened small farmers and city workers. I oppose a national bank that, he said, would give too

much power to the federal government. If you agree, check to the left.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

America should support people who are dissatisfied with their government and want to overthrow it, even if it is done by mob rule, lawlessness, and the confiscation of property from the rich and the

corrupt people. Agree? Check left. Disagree? Check right.
