1600’sNipmuc Tribe

Nipmuc tribe in Hampton, CT.

What did the Nipmucs do?

The women of the tribe made dolls , and that helped them because the girls had to make clothes. The boys were in charge of the hunting and fishing, Hunting had to be done because the family had to be fed. They built a canoe so they could go fishing. They ate fish, corn, beans, pudding and maple syrup. They did dancing, singing , feasting, gambling, wrestling, lacrosse and the snow snake game. Their houses were dome shaped and made of bark and cattail reeds. They would make sure no birds and animals would get the crops. What does wampum have to do with the Nipmucs of Hampton during the 1600s. They used wampum to trade, and they wore ornamental jewelry. Wampum is made of clam shells. The jewelry was also used in ceremonies.

Wampum is made from white and purple shells. It was used for ornamental ceremonial trade item.

Quahog clam

Quahog clams are very hard to find. Nipmucs were great traders . They used quahog shells to trade.

1700’s Peter Foster and his sons

Who was Peter Foster? He was a man who lived in Hampton in the 1770s. He and his 12 sons fought in the Revolutionary war. This is special because no other family of this size joined the military.

1700’sJohn Brewster, Jr.

What famous portrait painter lived in Hampton? John Brewster Jr. was born and raised in Hampton. He was born deaf and he could not hear or speak. This did not stop him from becoming an artist. His work was very serious to him, and he used eye contact to paint his pictures to show the feelings of the person.

They made buttons and brooms the brooms were made out of hay and the buttons were made in a factory.

1786Incorporation of Hampton

Hampton became a town in 1786. Before it was part of Windham, Canterbury, Pomfret, Brooklyn, and Mansfield. Population was 1,333 in 1786. What interesting facts are there about Hampton fire department? They use a breathing tube so they don’t breathe in the smoke. They wear heavy equipment so the fire wont get on there suits. They have hoses so when they see the fire they plug in the hose into a hydrant, where they get the water from.

1800Governor of Connecticut

Was there a Governor of CT from Hampton?

Yes, his name was Chauncey Fitch Cleveland. He arranged to have a train stop in Hampton.

1900John GoodwinEdwin Teale

Who were John Goodwin and Edwin Teale? John Goodwin made trails in Hampton. Edwin Teale bird watched and sketched nature. He wrote 3 books. Edwin Teale bought land in Hampton too. He used it for taking pictures and drawings to make a photo essay. He did not harm the land. Edwin Teale wrote about wildlife,; his book won the Pulitzer Prize.

1900’s Volunteer Fire Company

There are 25 members, the company responds to 70 calls a year including built/ house fire. `1929 ages 14-16 is able to join the fire to learn ins and outs of fire fighting

My wish for Hamptons future is a bunch of ice skating rinks paint ball wars, nerf gun wars, and more Wrights’ chicken farms!

2000Hampton Today

How many schools have there been in our town?

Did you know that there have been 7 schools in the town?

There may even have been more. Children played baseball at the town hall. The Town Hall used to be a school.
