Liz Davey Acting Principal

Dear Parents,

It has been an exciting two weeks at Hampton Park Primary School. The building program is moving ahead with Block B starting to look like classrooms. Block A, administration and specialist rooms, has had its footings poured and the slab should be

finished this week or early next week.

Last week, each grade were involved in activities related to National Reconciliation Week. The week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The dates that bookend the week are significant milestones in the reconciliation journey. May 27—Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. 3 June—Commemorates the High Court of Australia’s landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title. The children enjoyed the activities and were involved in great discussions. We also saw a great chess competition run by Mr Deacon. Interested students were able to attend chess games during lunch times and were placed in competitions with students of similar skills. More information further in the newsletter. In PE, Mr Lukas took 11 students to the divisional cross country. The students represented Hampton Park proudly and did very well.

The Grade 1&2 students went to Balnarring beach and the Dolphin Research Institute to learn about sea habitats. The students had a wonderful time walking along the rock pools and searching for sea creatures. Thanks to Miss Smith and all staff who attended for their wonderful planning and willingness to ensure the students had a fantastic day. Miss Smith also took our Science Captains to Frog Hollow in Endeavour Hills as part of their role as ambassadors of I Sea I Care.

Finally, I would like to say a fond farewell to one of our Educational Support Staff – Mrs Kim Moloney who is sadly leaving us for family reasons. I would like to thank Mrs Moloney for the support she has given our students. I would like to welcome Ms Julianne Wilkie to our staff as Mrs Moloney’s replacement, and Mrs Rebecca Kett and Ms Kerry Hutchinson as Educational Support staff. Enjoy the long weekend.

SCHOOL NEWS & REMINDERS

SUPREME INCURSIONS

Last Thursday and Friday Supreme Incur-sions were in the school organising activi-ties for Grades 1-6. First up it was the ‘Toys’ incursion for the Grade 1-2s. This incursion was linked to the students’ writing genre and geography unit. The students (and staff) had a lot of fun and worthwhile learning opportunities.

Then the Grade 3-6s took part in the ‘Orienteering’ part of the incursion. Students needed to work in teams to find clues and solve problems.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK Last week (27th May-3

rd June) the school

recognised National Reconciliation Week, as a mark of respect and to further our students’ education of our Indigenous people. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively. In 2017, we reflected on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. Our students participated in activities to learn about, and to acknowledge this event. This included dot paintings, reports about famous indigenous Australians and scratch boards.

GRADE 1/2 EXCURSION TO BALNARRING BEACH AND DOLPHIN RESEARCH

My Favourite toy

Everyone has a favourite toy and students in my class have their favourite toys too. My favourite toy is a troll. I believe my toy is the best toy in 12B. Here are some reasons why I think my toy is the best. Firstly, my toys has earrings and crystal shoes that makes it look attractive. Secondly, my toy has long eyelashes and its eyelids are sparkly. Finally, my toy has a soft, fancy long dress and long fluffy hair. It is a very popular toy among girls. So in my opinion, I strongly believe I have the best fanciest toy in Grade 12. Yagana (12B)

My Best Toy

Everybody has a favourite toy. Some people take their favourite toy everywhere with them. I think my toy is the best. Here are some reasons why I have the best toy in our class. Firstly, I strongly believe that my toy is the best because it has rainbow colours on it. Secondly, I like my toy because it has a ball and a hoop that you can carry in your pocket and play anywhere. Lastly, I think my toy is better than everyone elses because it just cost $2 and everyone can buy it from Uncle Bucks. In my opinion my toy is the best in 12B because it is fun to play indoors and outdoors. Crystal (12B)

My Favourite toy

Everyone has their most favourite toy. I have one too and I strongly believe my toy is the best and favourite out of all the toys in grade 12 B. Firstly, I think my toy is the best because you can make lots of things with it . Secondly, I strongly agree that my toy is best in the class because you can make a spinner and spin it just like fidget spinners. Finally, I believe this is because it could be played inside and outside. Many people can play with it. So I think my toy is the best. Michael (12B)

My Playful toy

Everyone has so many toys and our class has many toys too. But out of all the toys in the class, I think my toy is the best. Here are some of the reasons why I think like that. Firstly, I believe my toy is a very playful toy. Secondly, I think my toy is the best because it can talk, walk, play, drink, sleep unlike other toys in the class. Finally my toy is nice to play with when you don’t have a pet. So I think my toy is the best as it’s a friendly toy. Mia Hogan (12B)
