Overview of SAP HANA Update Scenarios and UpdateTools

This guide gives you an overview of the activities you have to perform when you update SAP HANA

SPS 03 to SAP HANA SPS 04. The goal of the update activities is that an SAP HANA landscape that

has been updated to SAP HANA SPS 04 has a comparable state to a newly installed SAP HANA SPS

04 landscape.

The update activities are split into the following areas:

• Performing an automated update

You perform an automated update on your SAP HANA system with the Software Update Manager

(SUM).

• Updating dependent components

• Updating the SAP HANA client

You need to update the SAP HANA client installations that are not located on the SAP HANA

system.

• Updating the SAP HANA studio

You need to update the SAP HANA studio installations that are not located on the SAP HANAsystem.

• Updating the SAP HANA replication technologies components

You need to update the replication technologies components that you are using in your SAP

HANA landscape.

• Updating BI clients using SAP HANA

You need to update the BI clients that you are using in your SAP HANA landscape.

• Post-update steps

Since the installation performed by the unified installer was enhanced with SAP HANA SPS 04, you

need to perform following installations:

• Installing the SAP HANA studio on the SAP HANA system (if not already installed with SPS 03)

• Installing the SMD Agent

• Installing the SAP HANA Direct Extractor Connection (DXC)

The use of the SAP HANA Direct Extractor Connection (DXC) is optional and only required in

certain scenarios. Because the DXC was introduced with SAP HANA SPS 04, you need to install

it, if you want to use it. Therefore no update activities are required.

Note:

Plan to have a business downtime during the update process.

Prerequisites

Before starting the update for the components in your SAP HANA landscape, make sure you fulfill the

following prerequisites:

• The Software Update Manager for SAP HANA is installed and configured on the SAP HANA system.

• You have carefully read the SAP HANA Automated Update Guide.

• You have all the necessary installation files for the individual components.

• You have carefully read the update instructions for the individual components.• You have made the necessary preparations to perform backups for the SAP HANA database and

the other components.

• Make sure that during the update the following requirements for the SAP HANA system are met:

• Directory "/" has at least 3 GB of free disk space.

• Directory "/usr/sap" has at least 4 GB of free disk space.

• Directory "/<hanamnt>" has at least 4 GB of free disk space.

Note:Contact your hardware partner if you need to enhance the disk space of your SAP HANA system.

Update Process

Before updating the SAP HANA components, make sure that no read or write processes are running.

Perform the update process in offline mode during a business downtime. After the update, you have to

start SAP HANA and its comprising components again.

Note:

For information about SAP HANA administration (for example start up and shut down or backup and

restore) and security, see the SAP HANA Knowledge Center on the SAP Help Portal

1. Stop all processes.

2. Make a backup if necessary.

3. Perform an automated Update with the Software Update Manager for SAP HANA.

4. Update the depending components.

5. Perform the post-update steps.

6. Restart all processes.

3.1 Performing an Automated Update on the SAP HANA System

An automated update of your SAP HANA system is performed using the Software Update Manager

(SUM) for SAP HANA. You have the following possibilities to use the SUM for SAP HANA:

• Online: In the SAP HANA studio, set up a connection to the SAP Service Marketplace to automatically

download the requested SPS to your SAP HANA system.

• Offline: Download the requested SPS and make it available to your SAP HANA system. In the SAP

HANA studio, enter the location of the downloaded SPS.

3.2.1 Updating the SAP HANA Client

Update all SAP HANA clients that are not located on an SAP HANA system. Use the same revision as

the SAP HANA database.

3.2.2 Updating the SAP HANA Studio

Update all SAP HANA studio installations that are not located on an SAP HANA system. Use the same

revision as the SAP HANA database. You can update the SAP HANA studio with the following methods:

• Using the Eclipse update framework

• Updating manually

3.2.3 Updating SAP HANA Replication Technologies Components

Update the SAP HANA replication technologies components depending on your scenario and the

replication technologies in use:

• Update to SAP BusinessObjects Data Services 4.0 SP2 Patch 4.

• Update to SAP BusinessObjects Information Platform 4.0 SP2 Patch 5.

• Update SAP LT (Landscape Transformation) Replication for SAP HANA to DMIS 2010 SP7.

Update the Business Intelligence (BI) clients you are using for SAP HANA.

The installation of the SAP HANA studio on an SAP HANA system using the SAP HANA unified installer

was introduced with SAP HANA Appliance Software SPS 04. You need to perform an installation of

the SAP HANA studio on the SAP HANA system.

3.3.2 Installing the SMD Agent

The installation of the Solution Manager Diagnostics (SMD) Agent on an SAP HANA System was

introduced with SAP HANA Appliance Software SPS 04. You need to perform an installation of the

Solution Manager Diagnostics (SMD) Agent on the SAP HANA system.

4.1 Updating to Higher Revisions of the SAP HANA Database

After the release of an SPS of the SAP HANA Appliance Software new revisions of the SAP HANA

database are released. To update your SAP HANA database to these new revisions, use the commands

hdbupd or hdbsetup which are provided with the SAP HANA database installation.

Software Requirements

Note:Only the software installed by your hardware partners is recommended for use on the SAP HANA box.

Do not install additional software on the SAP HANA box.

Operating System for SAP HANA

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP1 – for information about installing SLES 11 SP1 in an

SAP environment see SAP Note 1310037.

The following additional components need to be installed on the SAP HANA box:

• syslo-ng

• GTK2

• XULRunner 1.9.2 (minimum version)

If you are using a version lower than XULRunner 1.9.2 add the following line to the hdbstudio.ini

Network Time Protocol (NTP)

We strongly recommend that you set up an NTP server for the SAP HANA system landscape.

the correct chronological order.

Hardware Requirements

Hardware Check

During the update and the installation of the SAP HANA database (part of installation by the unified

installer), a hardware check is performed. For more information, see SAP Note 1652078.

Hardware Requirements for SAP HANA Network Connection

We recommend dedicated server network communication of 10 GBit/s between the SAP HANA landscape

and the source system for efficient data replication.

4.2.5 SAP License Key

You must install a permanent SAP license for the SAP HANA database. When you install your SAP

system, a temporary license is automatically installed. Before the temporary license expires, you must

apply for a permanent license key from SAP.

We recommend that you apply for a permanent license key as soon as possible after installing your

system.

4.2.6 Technical System Landscape

The figure below shows an overview of the technical system landscape for the SAP HANA appliance

software and its related components, such as the SAP HANA studio and other applications, one of
