Our Rector, Rev David Tyler, writes this month…

Dear friends, Paul talks about how we have treasure in jars of clay.

As I write, yesterday I came back from the Brecon Beacons. 14 men from church had spent since Thursday night in the Brecon Beacons on what was billed as an 'Extreme Character Challenge' ‐ and it was ‐ no campsites ‐ just on the hills! But by the end of it, we had all had a great, but challenging me.

We were one team in an event with 90 or so men from across the country.

Having seen 90 people really challenged, I realise how everyone has great points, even while under stress, or perhaps even we more easily see these great points at mes of pressure and challenge.

We all have treasures in our jars of clay. I wonder if you know what your treasures are? Perhaps you know ‐ but I bet you are more ready to see your faults than your treasures. Why not for one moment pause and think what your treasures are? What is really good about you? And if you don't know ‐ ask a friend.

We all have treasures ‐ it is good to recognise them.

With best wishes,

David

Hanborough Climate Heroes You may remember I introduced you to four of my friends last month. They all care about God’s world and the people who live on our small planet. They have decided to do something about climate change:

Ma Teresa – Ma doesn’t have a lot of money but she does have me and a huge heart.

Joe and Claire Other – Joe and Clair have just moved house. They have two young children. Not a lot of me or money but they are keen to do what they can.

Warren Smorgasbord – Warren is busy, busy, busy and me is money. He’s looking for things that make a difference but require very li le me. Money as long as it is well managed is not a problem for him.

Each month Ma, Joe and Claire, and Warren have kindly agreed to share their current projects as they seek to care for God’s world and the people who live on it.

November:

Ma: “I checked my carbon footprint at Climate Stewards and it isn’t as bad as I thought it might be. I suppose I do use the bus or walk to most places. My grand‐daughter was a real wiz on the internet and mobile phone. She showed me an App called Google Maps that gives me the number and mes of my buses. It can do the same with train mes. It makes public transport much easier.”

Page 7: Hanborough Parish News 2016 Parish News.pdf · Hanborough Parish News November 2016 Our Rector, Rev David Tyler, writes this month… Dear friends, Paul talks about how we have treasure

Joe and Claire: “The thermosta c radiator valves recommended by Parity Projects are installed. It’s great to be able to have the rooms at different temperatures. We have found that a lot of our friends seem to have them already. Another thing that the Parity Report recommended was insula on so we are looking at the different op ons. They aren’t very glamorous but they seem to make a huge difference and once done are pre y much permanent. Before falling into bed, we are reading David Bookless’ book – ‘Planetwise’. It gives a theological background to climate change – bit extreme at mes but there is some really good stuff in there too.”

Warren: “Exci ng to see that construc on has started on the Southill Solar Farm between Fawler and Charlbury. You can see it on the right as you drive into Charlbury. The income from selling electricity is going to be used to provide a dividend of around 5% ‐ not bad in the current market ‐ and it will also fund work on the village hall in Charlbury to make it more energy efficient. It will provide electricity for the whole of Charlbury and more. Impressed by the team heading it up. I’m looking into offse ng my business flights. It’s not as expensive as I thought it might be. Important to find the right off‐se er though. Climate Stewards look good.”

Christmas Shoebox Appeal This year the Witney Shoebox team have decided to support the Teams4U Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Teams4U charity is run by Dave Cooke, who in 1990 originated the idea of the “Christmas Shoebox” ‐ a gi filled box sent from one child to another with no strings a ached‐ this simple concept con nues in his work today. This year the boxes are going to Romania. If you would like to take part in this appeal a dona on box is at the back of St. Mary's Church together with leaflets. Please help yourself.
