2. The Program is Dedicated to Ignaz SemmelweissIn spite of many advances in Infection Control HANDWASHING STILL BE BEST OPTION11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 2 3. 11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 3 4. Hand WashingHand washing for hand hygieneis the act of cleaning one'shands with or without the useof water or another liquid, orwith the use of soap or e.g.ash, for the purpose ofremoving soil, dirt, and/ormicroorganisms.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 4 5. Medical useMedical hand-washing is for a minimum of 15 seconds, usinggenerous amounts of soap and water or gel to lather and rub eachpart of the hands. Hands should be rubbed together with digitsinterlocking. If there is debris under fingernails, a bristle brush maybe used to remove it. Since germs may remain in the water on thehands, it is important to rinse well and wipe dry with a clean towel. After drying, the paper towel should be used to turn off the water(and open any exit door if necessary). This avoids re-contaminating the hands from those surfaces.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 5 6. CDC Recommends HandWashing CDC recommends cleaninghands in a specific way toavoid getting sick andspreading germs to others. The guidance for effectivehand washing and use ofhand sanitizer wasdeveloped based on datafrom a number of studies.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 6 7. 11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 7 8. Hand washing is Like a Vaccine Hand washing is like a "do-it-yourself" vaccineitinvolves five simple andeffective steps (think Wet,Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry)you can take to reduce thespread of diarrheal andrespiratory illness so youcan stay healthy11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 8 9. When should you wash yourhands? Before, during, and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who issick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a childwho has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing, orsneezing After touching an animal, animal feed, oranimal waste After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 9 10. 11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 10 11. How should you wash yourhands?Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold),turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbingthem together with the soap.Be sure to lather the backs ofyour hands, between yourfingers, and under your nails.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 11 12. How should you wash your hands? Scrub your hands for at least20 seconds. Need a timer?Hum the "Happy Birthday"song from beginning to endtwice. Rinse your hands well underclean, running water. Dry your hands using a cleantowel or air dry them.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 12 13. Why Soap is effective inPrevention of Infection Using soap to wash hands ismore effective than usingwater alone because thesurfactants in soap lift soiland microbes from skin, and people tend to scrubhands more thoroughlywhen using soap, whichfurther removes germs11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 13 14. Advantages using MedicatedSoaps? To date, studies have shownthat there is no added healthbenefit for consumers (thisdoes not includeprofessionals in thehealthcare setting) usingsoaps containingantibacterial ingredientscompared with using plainsoaps11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 14 15. When to Use Hand SanitizerWashing hands with soapand water is the best wayto reduce the number ofmicrobes on them in mostsituations. If soap andwater are not available, use an alcohol-based handsanitizer that contains atleast 60% alcohol.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 15 16. Why SanitizersWhy? Many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcoholconcentration between 6095% are more effective at killing germsthan those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-basedhand sanitizers Non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers may1) not work equally well for all classes of germs(for example, Gram-positive vs. Gram-negative bacteria, Cryptosporidium, norovirus); 2) cause germs todevelop resistance to the sanitizing agent; 3) merely reduce thegrowth of germs rather than kill them outright, or 4) be more likely to irritateskin than alcohol-based hand sanitizers11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 16 17. How do you use handsanitizers? Apply the product to thepalm of one hand (read thelabel to learn the correctamount). Rub your hands together. Rub the product over allsurfaces of your hands andfingers until your hands aredry.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 17 18. Soap Water still has ManyAdvantages Why? Although alcohol-based handsanitizers can inactivate many types ofmicrobes very effectively when usedcorrectly , people may not use a largeenough volume of the sanitizers ormay wipe it off before it has dried.Furthermore, soap and water aremore effective than hand sanitizers atremoving or inactivating certain kindsof germs, like Cryptosporidium, norovirus, and Clostridiumdifficile11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 18 19. Simple and Regular soaps stillgood ? Keep in mind that antibacterialsoap is no more effective atkilling germs than is regularsoap. Using antibacterial soapmight even lead to thedevelopment of bacteria thatare resistant to the product'santimicrobial agents makingit harder to kill these germs inthe future.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 19 20. If No Water or Soap in yourReach Washing hands with soap and water isthe best way to reduce the number ofmicrobes on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizerthat contains at least 60% alcohol.Alcohol-based hand sanitizers canquickly reduce the number ofmicrobes on hands in somesituations, but sanitizers do noteliminate all types of germs.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 20 21. How do I properly wash myhands? For effective hand washing, follow these steps: Remove any rings or otherjewellery. Use water and wet your handsthoroughly. Use soap (1-3 mL) and lathervery well. Scrub your hands, between yourfingers, wrists, and forearmswith soap for 15 seconds. Scrub under your nails11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 21 22. How do I properly wash myhands? Rinse thoroughly. Dry your hands with a single usetowel or air dryer. Turn off the taps/faucets with apaper towel. Protect your hands fromtouching dirty surfaces as youleave the bathroom.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 22 23. Not washing hands harms childrenaround the worldAbout 2.2 million children under the age of 5 die each year from diarrhealdiseases and pneumonia, the top two killers of young children around theworld. Handwashing with soap could protect about 1 out of every 3 youngchildren who get sick with diarrhea and almost 1 out of 6 young childrenwith respiratory infections like pneumonia. Although people around the world clean their hands with water, very fewuse soap to wash their hands. Washing hands with soap removes germsmuch more effectively. Handwashing education and access to soap in schools can help improveattendance. Good handwashing early in life may help improve child development insome settings.11/11/14 Dr.T.V.Rao MD 23 24.
