IntroductionWelcometotheDepartmentofDance!Thishandbookisdesignedtoanswersomeofthemanyquestions you will have as you work toward the B.A. or the Minor in Dance. It containsinformation about department policies, classes, productions, studio access, and otherresources.YouwillrefertothisbookthroughyourUMBCcareer.Readitduringyourfirstweekshere,andpleasecontactJoyAbee,ProgramManagementSpecialist([email protected])orCarolHess,DanceDepartmentChair([email protected])ifyouhaveanyquestions.

Your time in college will be both challenging and inspiring. Be conscientious about youreducationandcollegecareer.Takeadvantageofthemanyopportunitiestoperform.Makethemost of your time here, as you open yourself to learning new techniques, performing newchoreography,andadvancingyourknowledgeofdance.Mostofall,workhardandenjoyyourdancing!

DepartmentMissionThe UMBC Department of Dance offers challenging and innovative instruction in technique,performance, history, composition, technology, and production. The program integrates thestudyofdanceasadisciplinewithinaliberalartsprogram.Ourprogramdevelopsthe“whole”dancer, integrating the physical with the intellectual, and the analytical with the expressive.Students train in a wide range of styles with core faculty and visiting artists, gaining newperspectivesaboutthechangingworldofcontemporarydance.

Ourgoalistoproduceuniquedanceartistswhomovebeautifully,andhavesomethingto“say”asdancersandchoreographers.Wechallengeourstudentstoperformtotheirfullestpotential,totesttheirlimitsaschoreographers,andtoquestionandthinkcriticallyaboutdance.

Thedepartmentisdedicatedtoprovidingopportunitiesforallstudents,includingnon-majors,to study dance at their skill level. Expected proficiencies at each level of Ballet andContemporaryDancecanbefoundinAppendicesEandFattheendofthishandbook.Therearenumerousopportunitiestoperformeverysemester.

CoursesofStudy

TheB.A.inDanceTheBachelorofArtsdegreeprogrampreparesfuturedancers,choreographers,educatorsandscholars, through a core curriculum that includes traditional and experimental techniques,creative exploration, historical and aesthetic context, technology, and production skills.Studentsmaypursueelectivestudyinanumberofdisciplinesandrelatedsubjectmatter.Thedepartmentoffersavarietyofapproachestothechoreographicprocessandtoperformance.TheArtist-in-Residenceprogrambringsnationallyand internationallyrecognizeddanceartiststotheUMBCDanceDepartmenteachyear.Studentshavetheopportunitytoworkintensivelywiththeseartistsinseveralcourses,andtolearnaboutdifferentmethodsofchoreographyandtrainingtechniques. TherequirementsfortheBachelorofArtsinDanceincludeaminimumof58credits.Agradeof“C”istheminimumacceptableforcredittowardthemajor,withtheexceptionoftheGatewayCourse,DANC320IntermediateContemporaryDanceTechniqueII,whichrequiresaminimumgradeof “B”. Studentsentering theprogramwith littleornodance trainingare required tocomplete preparatory courses in addition to major requirements. Students entering theprogramwithahighlevelofdancetrainingmaybeplacedontheAcceleratedPathwaytotheB.A.MajorrequirementsarelistedintheUMBCCatalog,andinAPPENDIXAofthishandbook.

MinorinDanceTheMinorinDanceoffersstudentstheopportunitytostudydancetechniqueandtogainsomebreadthofknowledgeaboutcontemporarydance,ballet,thehistoryofdance,andtheprocessofcreatingandperformingdance.Studentsminoringindanceareencouragedtoauditionfordepartmentproductions,andtoparticipateinthedepartmentasmuchaspossible.A19-creditprogramofstudyincludesacombinationofcorecoursesandelectives.MinorrequirementsarelistedintheUMBCCatalog,andinAPPENDIXBofthishandbook.

EducationCertificationThe Department of Dance offers undergraduate dance majors the opportunity to becomecertified to teach dance in the public school system, through its relationship with theDepartmentofEducation.StudentsdesiringtopursueMarylandStateDepartmentofEducationcertificationasaDanceSpecialistforK-12mustcompleteallrequirementsfortheBachelorofArts in Dance, required Education courses, and TeachingMethods for Dance, offered by theDepartmentofDance.TeachercandidatesmustpassthestatewidePraxisIexam,andcompleteayear-longextensiveteachinginternship.Afulllistofcoursesrequiredforcertificationcanbefoundathttp://education.umbc.edu/files/2016/08/Dance_BA_Ed_Advising_Form.pdf.The UMBC Graduate School offers a Masters in Teaching (MAT) in Dance through theDepartmentofEducation. CandidatesfortheMATmustbeacceptedbythegraduateschool.Candidatesmust completeDanceCoreRequirements prior to entry, either through aB.A. inDance, or by completing specified courses. Qualified undergraduates may pursue a 5-year BA/MAT option through the Department ofEducation.

CourseInformation

PhysicalEducationRequirementDance majors who complete the B.A. in Dance automatically complete UMBC’s PhysicalEducation requirement upon completion of DANC 410 Advanced Contemporary DanceTechnique I and DANC 420 Advanced Contemporary Dance Technique II. Beginning dancestudentsenrolledinDANC110BeginningContemporaryDanceTechniqueImayrequesttotheregistrartoapplyDANC110towardtheirPErequirementuponcompletionofthecourse.

ElectiveCoursesThedepartmentfrequentlyofferselectivecoursesindance.Studentsareencouragedtostudythecoursescheduleforeachupcomingsemester.

• DANC301SpecialStudiesinDancearefrequentlyoffered,andincludePointe,HipHop,Jazz, Tap, and Introduction to IndianDance. Specific topicsmay not be offered everysemester.DANC260AfricanDanceisofferedeverySpring.

• DANC 400 Independent Study in Dance is recommended for students interested inindependentresearchorself-directedprojectsoftheirowndesign,inconsultationwithafacultymentor.DANC400isalsorecommendedforstudentswhowantexperienceinchoreographybeyondtherequiredDANC290IndependentProjectsinChoreography,topreparefortheirSeniorProjectspiece.

• DANC 356 Special Studies in Ballet is offered once per year, and provides highintermediateandadvancedballetstudentstheopportunitytolearnandperformballetchoreography.Admissiontothecourseisbyinvitationoraudition.

RepeatableCoursesTechniquecoursesare repeatable forcredit, so that studentscangain theskills theyneed inorder toprogress tomoreadvanced levels.All courses incontemporarydance techniquearerepeatabletwotimesforcredit.DANC216BalletII,DANC316BalletIII,andDANC416BalletIVare repeatable four times for credit. Studentswhodo not earn a C or better in a techniquecoursemustrepeatthatcourseinorderforittocounttowarddancemajorrequirements.

Co-requisiteCoursesThecornerstoneofdancetrainingisthetechniqueclass,andacommitmenttotheconsistencyoftraining.Regulartrainingmaintainsand/orincreasesstrengthandflexibility,andreducestherisk of injury. Students in composition or performance courses are required to be enrolledconcurrentlyinatechniquecourseatorbelowtheirlevelofskill,forcredit.

AttendancePolicyforStudioDanceCoursesStudents are expected to take responsibility for their progress, and to have work habitsconsistent with the field of dance. Work ethics include focused attention, fully committedparticipation,progressandaccomplishmentovertheentirecourse.Attendanceisanessentialtothedevelopmentofadancer;however,perfectattendancedoesnotguaranteeagradeof“A.”Everyone isexpectedtoattendclassasabasicrequirement.Studentsaregradedonthedegree to which they master the techniques, movements and principles in exercises andcombinationstaughtinclassasappropriatetothelevelofthecourse.Studentsareexpectedtoattendallclasses,andshouldbeinthestudioaheadoftime,readytobeginclassontime.Latenesscanaffectgrades.Studentswhoare10minutes latewillnotbepermittedtojointheclass.Studentslessthan10minuteslatemusthaveinstructorapprovaltojoinclass.Tardiness:Arriving10minuteslateistheequivalentof1/2absence.Thestudentisnotpermittedtoparticipate.Observationandnotesarerequired.Studentsmusthandintheirnotesattheendofclass.Absences

• SENIOR DANCE CONCERT features major works choreographed by senior studentsenrolledinDANC475SeniorProjects.Seniorchoreographersarelimitedto5dancersineachwork.

CastingPolicy• Dancemajors,minorsandnon-majorsarepermittedtoperforminstudentworksifthey

are enrolled in a UMBC technique course for credit during the semester of theperformance.Thisruleisstrictlyenforced.

• Onlydancerswhocanattendallrehearsalsforthepiececanbecast.• AllstudentperformersmustreadandsignaPerformerContract,availableonline,andin

APPENDIXCattheendofthishandbook.• Students cast in a piece are strongly advised to register for DANC 280 Performance

Practicum, where they can earn 1 credit for each piece performed. DANC 280 isrepeatableforamaximumof6credits.

PerformanceOpportunitiesThefollowingcoursesincludeperformancesattheendofthesemester:

• DANC 280 Performance Practicum awards 1 credit for rehearsing/performing in astudent-choreographedpiece.Studentsgainentry tothiscoursethroughauditions,orbytheinvitationofthechoreographer,andmustrequestpermissiontoenrollfromthefacultymembermentoringthestudentchoreographer.

• DANC 230 Improvisation performs either site-specific work on campus or a stageperformance.

• DANC301SpecialStudiesinDancearecombinedtechniqueandperformancecoursesinavarietyofstyles.Checkthecourselistingsforeachsemestertoseewhatisoffered.

• DANC350DanceWorkshopisaregularlyscheduledcourseinwhichstudentsparticipateinthebuildingofadancepiecedirectedbyfacultyorvisitingartists,andperformsintheDanceShowcase.

• DANC356StudiesinBalletoffersstudentstheopportunitytolearnandperformneworrepertorychoreography inballet.Forhigh intermediateandadvancedballetstudents,eitherbyauditionorinvitationofthefaculty.

• DANC390DanceProductionWorkshopisaspecialcoursedesignedtoprovidestudentsthe opportunity to perform in a piece choreographed by a faculty member, at theinvitationofthefaculty.Whenoffered,theclassperformsintheDanceShowcase.

• DANC 450 Repertory challenges students to learn and/or build choreography at anadvanced level, choreographed by a faculty member or visiting artist. Prerequisite:DANC350.

GeneralInformationforPerformers• Studentsinterestedinperforminginadanceconcertmustattendtheauditionforthat

particularconcert.• There are separate auditions for Senior Concert, First Works Concert, and Dance

Showcase.• Castlistswillbepostedwithin3daysoftheaudition.• Studentsmustbeabletoattendallrehearsals,showings,techrehearsals,performance

warm-ups,performances,andtechnicalstrikeinordertoacceptcasting.• StudentscastinapieceshouldregisterforDANC280immediately.

andamaximumof6student-choreographedpiecespersemester.• StudentsenrolledinDANC399mayperforminamaximumof1student-choreographed

pieceinthesemestertheytakethecourse.

PerformerContractAll students performing in a student-choreographedpiece, regardless of enrollment inDANC280,mustreadandsignaPERFORMERCONTRACTforeachpieceinwhichtheyareperforming.SeeAPPENDIXCofthishandbook.

GeneralInformationforChoreographersStudentchoreographersmustbeenrolledinacourse(DANC29O,DANC400orDANC475)tochoreographapiece.

• FirsttimestudentchoreographersarerequiredtotakeDANC290IndependentProjectsinChoreography.Contactyouradvisorforpermissionifyoumeettheprerequisite.

• Student choreographers who have completed DANC 290 may request permission toregisterforDANC400IndependentStudyinDance,for2ormorecredits,dependingonthescopeoftheirproject,asdeterminedbytheinstructor.

• Choreographers must read and sign the CHOREOGRAPHER CONTRACT, and agree totheirresponsibilitiesdescribedtherein.

• Choreographersmustsignupforregularrehearsaltimes,andwillbeprovidedaccesstothestudiocalendarsafterauditions.

• Choreographers must attend all rehearsals, showings, tech rehearsals, andperformances.

• Choreographersmustsignupforandcompletetechnicalhours.• Studentsmaychoreographamaximumofonepieceperconcert.• PerformersmustbeaUMBCstudent,enrolledinatechniquecourseforcredit.• Arriveatrehearsalspreparedwithmovementideasorphrases.• Schedulerehearsalswhenalldancersareavailable.• CollectPERFORMERCONTRACTsfromdancersandturnthemintofacultymentor.• Costumesshouldnotbepurchaseduntiltheperformancelistisposted.

ChoreographerContractAll student choreographers are required to sign the CHOREOGRAPHER CONTRACT. SeeAPPENDIXDofthishandbook.

MusicPolicyforStudentChoreographersThedepartmentseekstofosteracultureofexperimentationandresearch,wherestudentsarechallenged to push their own boundaries, and expand their knowledge regarding music

selectionforchoreography.TheMusicCoordinatorisahelpfulresourcewhocansteerstudentchoreographers in various directions toward researching and exploringmusic. Guidelines formusicmayvaryamongcourses(DANC290,DANC400,DANC475),andstudentsareexpectedtoadheretothem.Studentchoreographersshouldconsultwiththeirinstructortoensurethattheirselectionofmusicfallswithinthespecificationsfortheircourse.Choreographersshouldhavealternateselectionsofmusicinmind,incasetheirfirstchoiceofmusicisnotclearedforusebythecompaniesthatholdtherightstothatmusic.Otherrequirementsinclude:

• Unlessmusicisbeingplayedlive,finalmusicmixes,onacceptablefileformatsmustbesubmittedtothetechnicaldirectoroneweekpriortothefirsttechrehearsal.

• Musicmust behighquality or CD-quality formats (at least 44.1 sample rate and .AIF,.WAVorAACfiles).

• MP3filesandYouTubedownloadsarenotacceptableassourcefiles.Ifthemusicsourceis not available in a high-quality format, contact the Music Coordinator BEFOREproceedingwithanyediting.

MusicRightsRequirementforStudentChoreographers

There is much conflicting and unclear information about the use of copyrighted music fordance, and various universities and studios address it in different ways. The departmentfollows the recommendations of UMBC’s legal counsel regarding music usage in studentchoreography created for public performance. All choreographers must acquire “grandperformance rights” permission via direct consent from the publisher, composer (or agentthereof) foranymusicused inapublicperformance.TheMusicCoordinator teaches studentchoreographershowtodotheresearchtodetermineallpermissionsnecessaryforeachpieceofmusictheywishtouse.

• Amusicrightsinformation/requestformmustbecompletedandsubmittedtotheboththe instructor and Music Coordinator seven (7) weeks before the scheduledperformancedate.TheMusicCoordinatorwillprocessandsubmitrequestsdirectlytomusicpublishersandotherrequiredentities.

CostumeSignOutPolicy

The department maintains a small inventory of costumes that student choreographers mayborrowforUMBCperformances.Therulesareasfollows:

• StudentchoreographersmustsignoutallborrowedcostumesintheDanceOffice.

have received awards for summer study at the Bates Dance Festival, the American DanceFestival,BroadwayDanceCenter,Jacob’sPillow,andotherprestigioussummerprograms,andhave applied the skills andmethodologies learned at those festivals to choreograph originaldance works which are presented at UMBC on Undergraduate Research and CreativeAchievementDayeachApril.SummerDanceResearchandStudyAwardThis award is specific to the dance department and is available to Dance Majors who arecurrent sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated excellence in performance and/orchoreography and who have strong potential for success as professional dance artists.
